Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

@Zero
Nothing's stopping you from playing 3D World competitively, that's part of the reason the game impressed me. You can play all levels however you want to.

@carlosrox

True but I think he's looking for other ways besides score to track competition. Its not that quick and simple to see who got the most coins or perhaps they could have had a thing showing who took down the most enemies or something. I think he's kinda leaning in that direction.

@carlosrox That's true in the sense that it is true for all multiplayer games though. Sure there is the crown, but that's minimal. I'm talking about a full-blown mode like the coin battle stuff in the older games, except with the big 3D worlds to screw around in. In my mind though there are also elements of 4 Swords in here, where you could attack the others and make them spill coins and such. Could have been awesome.

Ah well.

Well, I think it's time for me to call it quits. Despite everyone's words of encouragement in this thread, I just can't finish the last level. I hate to say it, but this is a battle I cannot win. *hangs head in shame and walks away*

@DrFinkelstein

I'm impressed, man. Seriously.

yea me and my friend were disappointed to hear to 100% the game you have to beat it with everyone to unlock the last level/world. We'll have everything but the last 5 stickers and he thinks its absurd to have to replay the game 3 more times. We already blew A LOT of lives.... and we didn't consistently use the same characters. We are on Mushroom World right now with gold flags all stamps and all green stars up to that point. It would help if they had it in the menu who beat what stages. If we ever went back we'd have to guess since there were plenty of levels we both didn't touch the flag at the end (thats what she said)

@roykoopa64

What parts stops you? Have you used a leaf power up to better your chances?

And thanks. I have that last level and the last mystery house (which is hardly a challenge anymore after figuring out number ten, the ice skating one) beaten with Mario, Toad, and Luigi. Still working on beating everything with Luigi though. I spent time 100%ing Worlds 1-4. I just want those early levels done with as I've played them soooooo much.

@Wellsy529

The last world and stages unlock without beating the game 100% with everyone, just in general. Also, that's all you get as far as I know from beating it 100% with each character, the last sticker for each person. After I opened up the last level, or maybe I had to beat it first, it showed me who I beat each level with. There was no guesswork at all when it came time to start tackling that. As for beating the game a billion times over, it's a little tedious but honestly, by then, especially with the right power ups, you can blast through everything because you should already have all the green stars and possibly gold flags.

Look into a wiki or something to find out exactly when the game shows you who beat what levels. Shoot for that, then go back with everyone. It'll save you time and strife.

Got my fifth star the other day, now it's 100% complete!

@Mop it up

Nice! I beat everything with Luigi today. So I just have two more characters to do that with. I'm not too far now.
01/01/14, 22:38
@DrFinkelstein I just did the multiplayer trick, didn't wanna get burned out on the game or else I may not replay it later on.
01/01/14, 22:40
@Mop it up

Oh it counts? So did you play with someone else or just always keep someone in a bubble?
01/01/14, 22:45
@DrFinkelstein Nah, I use the other save files when I play real multiplayer, as people want to make their own progress through the game instead of replaying levels I already beat. This game lets players join mid-level, so the trick is that you have the other three characters join when you get to the end. Then you toss them onto the flagpole, as it will count for their character only if they touch the pole. Then I have them leave on the map and repeat the process for the next level.

For some added challenge though, there were many times where I had one other player activated and carried the character to the goal. It can be tough to protect them sometimes!

@DrFinkelstein

I keep having trouble with the beep block stairway, mostly. But the problem is I make small errors every now and then while I try to get to that part, and having to start over and over again is no fun.

And yeah, I've tried the Tanooki Suit, which works wonderfully. I usually make it to the swinging spike bar section before I get hit for the first time and lose the suit. I did play just a few minutes ago and made it to the end of the stage. Unfortunately, I died while collecting the last of the 5 key things. So close! And when I tried again, I kept making stupid mistakes early on in the stage, which only serves to remove any motivation I have to keep trying and trying. I can only take so much re-trying and so many lives lost before I decide it's time to move on to something else!

Oh, and I'm doing this with Toad.

Played this with my parents and Nikki yesterday. It was..trying, haha, to say the least.

They seemed to enjoy themselves though, and there was a great deal of laughter.
And every time someone showed up in a bubble, my dad was certain someone came out of the water, haha!

Good stuff. I think we had more collective fun with TANK! TANK! TANK! though. TANK! TANK! TANK!

Just finished 100%ing the whole game. All characters. It was great, but there was definite fatigue that set in... I'm happy for a break.
01/02/14, 22:14
Played the game for the first time just now, and hoooooly crap. Every little thing I come across makes me feel as if someone from Nintendo is whispering sweet nothings into my ear. Which is kind of creepy, but other than that it's brilliant.

@r_hjort

It's Miyamoto sitting next to you, strumming a ukulele, whispering "meow, meow...meow, meow, meow....meow."

@Abdooooo
Finally I know what it's like to be Miyamoto-san's wife. Or possibly cat.

This game is perfection.

A week without playing it and my guilt was right. How dare I leave this art alone for so long? It needs to be loved.

I just finished the game (aka got to the end of the second secret world and did the Boss Rush level). Overall a fantastic game that... I didn't really enjoy all that much. It was very odd. I had a lot of fun at the beginning, but then as it continued I just felt like I was forcing my way through. Had my wife not "HAD" to see all the levels I'd have quit long ago. So that's kind of weird.

I think the camera-thing was what really bugged me. I never got a handle on judging distance and whatnot, even after the whole game. So it was frustrating when I'd die to Goombas or whatever because I couldn't see correctly. All in all the beachy levels just made me want more Mario Sunshine, which I honestly feel like was the last "real" 3D Mario game. Galaxy and G2 were amazing masterpieces, but I want my "choose the level by going into the portal and then a list of stars you have to collect in that big, open, lovely-to-run-around-in level with no timer or "goal line" or whatever. That's what I want.

And if I can't get it, well, I'll just go play Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Banjo-Kazooie again. I don't mind, they are the best games ever made.

9/10 for unbiased quality
4/10 for personal enjoyment

PS. I would play a game that was just entirely Plessie levels. I loved them best.
