Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

Also, I'm finally getting all the cat suit love now. It's gotten to the point where I miss it when it's gone--very fun for speed runs and its sheer versatility.

Water levels still kinda suck, though. It'd be nice to have a suit that feels great in the water (and still decent on land). Maybe the Frog Suit can make its return, complete with tongue-lashing action?
Yeah i was sad that the Frog suit was a no show

Yeah, the water control of the 2D games doesn't work very well for a 3D game like this one. Plus, I'd have liked more than one new powerup like the cat suit in general, stuff like the double cherry and cannon head are fun but they're temporary and not used all that much.

I dunno but all I know is I know longer have problems jumping and landing wherever the hell I want and at a very quick pace. I can jump on goombas heads and just be accurate at everything. Mop It Up and Tbun are making it sound like the controls make this very hard to do, and it kinda is until you get used to it. My brother isn't as good at me at games and makes the exact same complaint and I tell him the exact same thing.

@TriforceBun
Just practice more, trust me. You'll get it. Then you'll be long jumping and rolling and long jump rolling and spinning and jumping everywhere and on everything with ease. Makes the game so damn awesome.

This game also has a ton of suits and camera and multiple players and numerous useful moves as well. I get the feeling this game is not getting enough credit. It seems some people (not necessarily you) still think this is some lazy Mario game that Nintendo crapped out. People are really missing the genius and I think it's much better than the Galaxy games even. To make this game fun and playable at every angle in every level with every suit and character is incredible. The flow of the levels and gameplay is remarkable. It's a 2D Mario game in 3D that works as both types of games. Absolute achievement in my book.

It's fun to take the stamps and mesh them together to create new things

No. I'm glad that someone sees in this game what I do. I don't think I could've said it any better than you did.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule Just look at the scores, it seems all of Negative World agrees.

The water levels for me were among the games' low points. They were just kind of disorienting and lacked the fun that the regular levels had. Swimming in 64 and Galaxy was way better.

I actually really liked the water levels overall, particularly whenever there are those floating walls of water that you have to platform between (I actually love these parts in just about every Mario game that does 'em, they're so cool!). Deepwater Dungeon is one of my favorite levels in the game.

You totally said the loud part quiet and the quiet part loud.

you guys have seen all of the little hidden 8-bit luigis all over the place right? so cool

@Wellsy529
Some are super well hidden. One I could only find by climbing up and back into the level with the Cat Suit. It was completely out of the way.

A few of them are like, stenciled into the grass in certain levels. Easy to miss.

Look up Active Gamer Life on YouTube. He is absolutely head over heels. He definitely gets this game.

The game is just deceptive in its detail. I think a lot of things are great in this game, but the more I pay attention to more I learn JUST how great.

For example, it's kinda crazy just how good the music really is when you play it loud on speakers or better yet with great headphones and listen to all the nuances. On the surface the music may sound simpler than it is, but there's really a ton going on. And much of the tracks which are indeed simpler are meant to evoke the old feelings of the NES and SNES Marios. Was their music simple? Yes. Is that music catchy and timeless? Is it an ear worm? Check check check, 3D World does just what the old games did, only in 2013 and on modern hardware.

The controls are also specifically designed this this way for obvious reasons. As I said before, the game is meant to be easy to play but harder to master. Single player you can change the camera around which basically changes the entire flow of the level. Then choose a new character. It changes again. Then play 2 players. Changes again. Then 4 and it's a whole other ball game.

Games like Galaxy, I would say, are the dumbed down Mario games. Seriously. I never had nearly as much fun just traversing the levels like I do 3D World. Gameplay wise, the best part about Galaxy is the spin jump. Having these huge open arenas for you to run around in is actually overrated in my book. Why even encounter enemies in that game? You can so easily skip them, while in 3D World they're much more often an actual obstacle.

I just think 3D World is just a much tighter designed Mario game that stays true to what Mario was always supposed to be. It's to Mario what ALBW is to Zelda. And that's not saying fully 3D Marios and Zeldas suck, or are WAY worse.
They just truly do seem to function smoother with much less fluff.

Having said all this, I'm still dying for a Galaxy 3 style game. Mainly though, I want my camera closer. I need to see this glory as close and big as I can. It deserves it.
12/12/13, 22:48
There were a ton of points in the Galaxy games where you couldn't just skip the enemies. Not sure where you are coming from there.
12/12/13, 22:53
@Zero
But most of the game was a lot more open than 3DW which is one of people's complaints. The openness doesn't really provide anything but the feeling of "Yay I can run here!!". I argue the style is less pure gameplay based in fully 3D games like OOT and Mario 64 compared to ALBW and 3DW.
I think these newer Nintendo games are really focusing on tight game and level design.

The supposed vastness of the 3D Mario games didn't really add anything at the end of the day. Honestly neither do fully 3D controls opposed to this sticky 8 way isometric gameplay.

This doesn't change the fact I do still want a fully 3D Mario game, I just want that will actually use analog control and open worlds in a better way.

And for the record, the controls in Galaxy while running around a sphere were a joke. I don't know how people complain about 3DW's controls while that elephant in the room in the Galaxy games was A - OK. It was terrible and annoyed me every time. How Nintendo of all developers allowed that I don't know.

The best is the one on the train if you stand where the coin is on the front of it the camera pans over to the tracks and Luigi is running at super speed. Or hes creepin in the windows of all the toad houses I go into. I think world 4? theres a pipe that gives you a different perspective of the world JUST to show you Luigi hiding behind a rock. So awesome
12/13/13, 02:38
So are there no stamps in bonus Mushroom world? Nathalie and I spent half an hour looking for one and then realized there wasn't actually the little blank stamp icon that you usually see on every level.
12/13/13, 03:12
@carlosrox I don't really feel like most of the world was more open at all, there were tons of tight spots. Yeah, you also had some areas that got much larger than anything in 3D World, but once you get beyond "tight spots" you're not forced into enemy interactions either way.
