Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

It's going to be a crazy day alright. I was just hired at a new job and I'm praying that they won't have me start until after next week. Haha.

Yep. I think digital distribution has caused a change in their big title release date.
Wind Waker HD was released on a Friday and I THINK Pikmin 3 was as well.

I envy you Monday-Friday workers. Living life in the Las Vegas golden handcuffs, you can be damn sure that I will be working every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I should have finished my bachelor's degree and gotten a real career instead of smoking all of that pot. Oh well.

I asked because you can play as Peach and she wears a dress. Maybe I'm thinking about this too hard.

@Tranquilo

Its a valid thought. I'm sure it'll act like one non-form-changing piece on her.
11/15/13, 19:20
I'm pretty sure it's implied in Peach's design that she's got a crinoline of sorts under her dress to give it that stiffer, puffed-out look.
11/15/13, 21:18
The clothes on Mario, Luigi, and Toad don't seem to get wet when they go swimming, so I doubt Peach's dress will either. Heck, you'd think Toad's mushroom cap would get all soggy and saggy, but nope.

Review embargo lifted

Reviews so far are... stunning. Whatever you think about 3D Land, this not being another Galaxy, etc. it seems like we have a killer game on our hands here.

GET PUMPED!

Plumber increasing in size after eating magical mushroom, no questions asked. Dress doesn't get wet -- hold the fucking phone!

j/k

I knew a couple of kids that expected Mario's clothes to get wet and soggy in Super Mario 64, back in the day. They were so disappointed when they realized it wasn't a feature, but on the other hand the fish AI (so ahead of its time! ) impressed them greatly.

As silly as the "the dress doesn't get wet?" complaint might seem, I recall being disappointed that there was not so much as a ripple when you jumped into water in the first Ratchet and Clank game on PS3.

There is something about cutting edge graphics that just draw attention to what's missing or imperfect.

@Guillaume
That makes more sense to me, for some reason. I think it has to do with cartoon physics a little bit, that I expect things to interact with each other, but not necessarily have the reactions I might expect in real life. Like, I would expect the water to splash when you land in it, but I wouldn't necessarily expect the water to cling to the character once the character is out of it, and it's reduced to a few drops just to indicate that. Similar to how I'd expect a character to get hurt from or at least acknowledge falling from high up, but not expect them to visibly break their legs or get a concussion.

But sure, the more focus we place on realism in graphics, the more detail like that we might come to expect. Yet another reason why I'm not overly fond of what the tech racing is doing to us, and another thing that complicates designs for games that aren't necessarily meant to be realistic in any other way, like Mario.

Yeah, I agree completely. And it's a good point, about cartoon physics.
11/19/13, 21:08
Yeah, there's definitely a fine line between acceptable cartoonish reality-bending stuff, and details that take you out of the gameplay. Nintendo's usually great about keeping the presentation immersive, but to give a Nintendo-related example--in games like Mario & Sonic, they'll often have the characters just sort of standing there in an idle animation after an event. They're still breathing or whatever, but it looks very lifeless and lacking in personality.

Regarding SM3DW...sounding pretty great now! I'm glad everyone seems to have greatly enjoyed it. I look forward to jumping in on Thanksgiving week.

DAT "uncanny valley" effect!

Kind of a neat EDGE quote:

"This is Mario like you’ve never seen him before, and unlike so many of his next-gen rivals, he nips along at an effortless 60fps. If the true measure of new hardware’s worth is how stark the difference is between it and what came before, then this is the most next-gen game that 2013 has yet produced."

Although I'm not sure how much I agree yet...

Thanks for posting. I'll put them in the OP probably as I've done with other game threads. I'll link to them too for people.
