Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

Finally beat the final level last night. I was so relieved to finish it. I don't think I'll be getting those last five stamps because of the ridiculous means of earning them. Other than that, I've 100%'d the game. Now I'll just replay levels as random characters until I'm done with the game.

After inviting a bunch of people over to play earlier this week, I've decided two things about this game:

1) NintendoLand is a better game for multiplayer.

2) This game absolutely sucks if one of the people playing will do whatever it takes to get the crown.

I'm for certain done playing 4-player, it was no fun at all. My wife and I will continue to go through co-op and ignore the crown/winner aspect (which I really wish you could shut off completely) and enjoy the experience. Competitively, awful. Too easy to screw people over, and co-op is just infinitely more fun.

Beyond that un-fun experience being stabbed in the back and thrown to my death over and over, I'm enjoying the variety of the game, and finding green stars/stamps is a joy. My biggest complaint is that the super fun levels (like Plessie) are over too quickly! Oh and the Mario Kart level? FABULOUS. I would play a whole game of that!

It's kind of neat following the Mii ghosts through the level and watching them play. Last night I saw Griptor's and Mop it up's ghosts.

@-JKR-

I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I kind of dread the day that I have to play this game with my niece and nephews. They cry and/or fight over who gets the highest jump on the flagpole in NSMB, so I can only imagine how bad it'll be when they're fighting over who gets the crown.
12/07/13, 18:35
@-JKR-
Why would that be the game's fault and why would you let them do that? I could see how you could say it's unfun if maybe it's just too hectic but because a friend was purposefully sabotaging you I don't see how that's a valid complaint.

I have a blast playing with one bro and hope to get the second to come around. Other than that I could probably have some friends over for 4 players but I don't do that much. I envy anyone who can easily get 4 people for this. I think it'd be awesome.

Also how far are you cuz the game gets exponentially better as it goes on.

I will agree with you the crown should be an option but I if people can ignore who gets first or just don't compete for it it's a non issue. My lack of enthusiasm towards it stems more from its cosmetic appearance. I just wanna see the characters as they are without a silly crown atop their heads.
12/07/13, 19:29
JKR is not into CHICAGO STYLE gaming confirmed. I wonder what me, Anand, my brother and I dunno... one of my cousins or someone else who is into griefing... would feel about the multiplayer? I guess we should find out soon.
12/07/13, 19:34
My wife, my buddy and his wife play this from time-to-time.
We definitely get competitive about the crown, but we also aren't using that particular file as our "main" games.

I suppose it depends how you approach it. You decided to ignore it, and I'm willing to bet you're having fun! Trish and I ignore it when playing just the two of us... Usually. Sometimes she'll back stab me right at the flagpole, but that's hilarious.

@-JKR-
You should have either smacked some sense into the trouble maker or just joined in the chaotic fun. Honestly though it's so easy to lose lives in this game in multiplayer, I fear to play extremely competitively. We would never finish a single stage.

The score counter actually made score in Mario games relevant and for that I commend it.

OK! After getting all green stars, stamps, and gold flagpoles, I've unlocked the true final world: World 12: Crown World.

There are only 3 stages:
-I beat Captain Toad's Fiery Finale.
-Whaaaa....! There are 30 green stars in Mystery House Marathon? That's quite the marathon indeed! I gave it a go but didn't make it far.
-And last, but not least: Champion's Road.

All I have to say is a big congratulations to the few of you who have completed that one! Truly insane. I have no idea how I'm going to do this.

I use Peach, and I'm getting good at making it to the beep block stairway, but there's one segment there where you have to jump once you climb the first 'staircase,' where it just doesn't seem you have enough time to jump up to the block and also jump off from it before it disappears. My approach must be wrong or something!

I may take a break and come back to this fresh.

@roykoopa64

That was the part that took me the longest to overcome. Eventually I got to a point where I could get through that part almost every time, but it takes a while before you can really get the timing down. And even with that, that part still never felt comfortable because it's really easy to jump just a split second too soon or late. Would it have killed them to put a checkpoint right after that part?!
12/08/13, 04:57
@roykoopa64

I used Toad so I'm not sure how it would work with Peach but I just ran to the edge of the block and jumped at the last possible second. Doing so would make me skip the next block and immediately land onto the one after. Then I repeated that again for the next set which brought me safely to the top.
12/08/13, 06:01
@roykoopa64 I suggest using Rosalina. Her fall-delaying spin attack is extremely useful and for the disappearing blocks and the parts after it. And the high jump is helpful too.

The level isn't that hard once you get how to play it down. Practice, practice, practice. Eventually you'll get the path through the level down to a science. The only problem is that once you get used to the earlier parts of the level, having to replay them over and over again to get to the new stuff you're not as experienced with is maddening. I would try to rush through those earlier sections and end up taking even longer than normal because I would keep dying on stuff I can easily beat if I take my time.

Thanks for the tips you guys!

I just used up around 40 lives or so playing as Toad. He's actually pretty good at getting through the first section before I get to the beep block stairway. However, I still can't quite get that very last block climb just as I approach the first green star!

@VofEscaflowne, now I understand what you're saying about jumping at the last possible moment and skipping the appearing block so you can land on the next same colored block just as it is appearing again. I'm just not sure that will help with that last part if the block climb since there are two of the same colored blocks in succession going up...

@Hero_Of_Hyrule, perhaps I'll give it a go with Rosalina next. The only thing I don't like about her is she's incredibly slow! But her skills should make up for that, as you can testify.

EDIT: Just for the heck of it, I tried this stage starting off in the Tanooki Suit with a Cat Suit in reserve. Wow, I got through the first parts quite easily! The Magikoopa battle was easy with the Tanooki Suit, but then I got hit on the section with the swinging spike bars and the black 'Fuzzy' enemies. I finally made it through that section but I was already small (Rosalina).

I decided to grab my cat suit for the next part but it didn't help much since I had a wall jump section (while avoiding deadly enemies) followed by a 'jump on the piranha plant heads to climb upward.'

I finally made it to the dash panel sections with the large deadly laser circles that spread outward. I couldn't believe it when I died as I came off one of the jumps and landed on one of the lasers. There was nothing I could do! I should have tried dashing around a bit and wait for a good time to jump, but the problem is how hard it is to stay in control and in one place when you're dashing like crazy.

So, yeah, having the Tanooki Suit is awesome, but of course if you die, it's gone, and it's too time consuming to go get another one every time. It would have been easier if this game had the item reserve system like in previous Mario games where you can stockpile items, but I suppose that would have made this too easy.

@carlosrox

I wasn't blaming the game, I realize it's about who is playing. Still, I'm sure there's a design option where, if you had one of those competitive friends/family members who are d-bags no matter how much you ask them to stop being, there could be a mode for competition and one for not competition. As I said, if there was a "No Crown" option- a single button in the menu that shut off the point-tally at the end- then it would have solved all the problems and no one would have quit after feeling lousy about that one jerk being a jerk.

@anon_mastermind

I did join in the chaotic fun, but there were others at the party who didn't WANT that kind of chaotic "fun" of backstabbing. And frankly I don't like myself much when I start acting the way I do in heavy competition. I'm pretty cut-throat and obnoxious and I don't want to be, it just comes out. So anyway, it was just one of those situations where there wasn't much option besides "Play Nintendoland instead." Or, I guess, "don't invite that person" if we were to do it again. That's a shame, though, since I don't really want to dis-include someone from playing games with everybody, you know?

Next party: Settlers of Catan. The game where backstabbing is pretty much written into the rulebook. :P

Ninsage and I beat the main game last night. We finished at 199 green stars, which wasn't bad considering we weren't actively looking for every star. Final boss fight was fun.

The challenge stages that followed... were challenging. We beat the first world, with many game overs.

Now that I've fully completed the game and played a significant portion of the multiplayer, here's my quick review:

Pros:
+Varied and inventive level design
+Enjoyable multiplayer
+Fun powerups
+Character selection (finally!)
+Nice music

Cons:
-Derivative
-Wonky control
-Plain graphics

Overall: 9/10

@TheOldManFromZelda You guys are like BFFs now!

@Mop it up Don't just tell us your rating, you have to rate it in the database! You can do so from this very thread!

@Zero Um... I did rate it!
12/08/13, 23:20
That you did. I just assumed you didn't because I didn't think it'd be at a 9.8 after a 9 was given out. Wow.
12/08/13, 23:22
@Mop it up
Controls are great and you can play with extreme precision if you get really good. Only a few rare times in the whole game do I find jumps hard to make and that's cuz the camera, not the controls.

Graphics are fantastic too. What's plain about them? I'll say the game is deceptively less impressive looking and that's again only because the camera is too far and masks how great everything really looks.
12/09/13, 00:04
@carlosrox I don't think the controls are bad, I just don't find them as smooth and precise as most other Mario games. It doesn't make anything harder (except maybe jumping from enemy to enemy), it mostly just feels off. Kinda tough to explain, but it's a step back from previous games.

With the graphics, I mostly mean how simplistic and boxy everything looks. It feels like a random obstacle course constructed with building blocks instead of a living, natural world with detail. The game has some nice effects with stuff like the lighting and rain, but overall I feel games like the Galaxy series and Sunshine look better.
