The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.9)  by

The latest entry in Nintendo's famous adventure series, The Legend of Zelda, is just about upon us! This game takes place in the same "world" as the classic SNES game, A Link To The Past, following a new Link on a new adventure through Hyrule, and an alternate kingdom, Lorule.

Time to grab the Master Sword once again, adventure fans. The world needs a hero, will you answer the call?

Maybe if they designed some special areas for her? 2D overworlds tend to be a little cramped, and the screen scrolling thing might get a little annoying. Haha.

If you want to get technical, they did put Epona in a top-down world during FSA. Granted, it was only for one stage though.

I shudder at the thought of Tingle's character design in II:II.

Four Swords Adventure on GCN? I don't remember that... maybe I never completed that game? It was one of those pesky titles you needed friends + GBAs to play so I think I only played it like twice...

@legendofalex
Haha, Tingle.

You can actually play 4 Swords Adventures in single-player mode. And surprisingly, it's not terrible! (though it is better with friends)

Hmm, I seem to remember trying that but not liking it. Oh well.

Man do you know what side quest I hate? The freaking foot-race, so annoying!

I lost that one by a second the first time I tried it, but I beat it the second time.

I missed out on (ITEM SPOILERS) Red Tunic and Level 3 Master Sword when I beat the game the first time, so I went back and got those. Just need 8 more heart pieces to finish off all hearts, I think 20 more of those shellfish things, and I will rock the perfect Shadow Link. Only battled four people, beat them all, but I want moar

I lost the first time I tried and quit, because it sucked, it's like the worst parts of Burnout Paradise distilled into pure anti-fun.

But now I'm mopping up all the items I missed so this morning I went back and then lost again, I was like 12 pixels from the finish line, so this time I started again right away but I ran into a tree while sprinting and lost again, and then I was like... okay, one more time, but that time I got lost and went into the village by mistake... then I had to go to work so I still haven't beat it. Grr...

Why are you guys finding the sprint game so hard? I got that thing on my second try I think

I just started this game yesterday, finally, and I'M LOVING IT. Really didn't lose too much time telling me how to play or making me practice swinging a sword on a dummy, which is great. The game mostly leaves you to your own devices, which is essential for me to enjoy a Zelda game.

I really like the mini-challenges in various caves throughout the game. I just did one where you grab a cuccoo and let yourself fall down a shaft, avoiding air currents. Great use of stereoscopic 3D, and pretty challenging.

I've just entered Lorule, and only recently got the Pegasus boots and started buying my items and upgrading them. I can't wait to see how badass Link gets once fully equipped.

Agreed. I did recently learn that you can cheat on that one.

If you use the Lorule portal that's located right next to the starting point, then warp up to Rosso's house, and use the portal there to come back through to Hyrule, and talk to the brother at the finish line, they won't disqualify you for using the broom.

Of course I had already managed to beat the sprint sidequest before I discovered that, so I wasted all that time doing it legitimately for nothing...

@V_s
Oh man, thank you for that, I am so cheating, I actually thought of trying something along those lines but I figured it would be an immediate disqualification.

@Guillaume
I heart the mini-dungeons, the little dude hanging out in those is hilarious.

So have you guys had the chance to use the streetpass feature a lot? I have a question about the "exploits": if I've already upgraded some weapons, have I just screwed myself out of the chance of getting the exploits related to the normal weapons?
12/17/13, 17:42
@Guillaume

You'll receive both.
12/17/13, 17:50
@VofEscaflowne

Oh really? That's kind of weird, to be honest.

I would have made it possible to select non-upgraded weapons, had it been up to me.
12/17/13, 17:53
I did something really dumb, I played through almost the entire game without upgrading my weapons, for some reason I thought you needed all 100 maiamai's and then all the happened was you got the silver/magic bow or something, I didn't realize you could upgrade each weapon with only 10 maiamai's, that's what I get for going on media blackout and being an idiot. Anyway, hilariously enough I was able to upgrade all my weapons at once, now I'm like freaking rambo.

This game is splendid so far. I just beat the first 3 dungeons and nabbed the sword and I'm suddenly treated to one of the best takes on the Zelda theme in any of these games. This game really highlights some of my favorite things about the series, and many elements that were sadly missing from the series since Zelda 1 (and ALttP). No bloat, no tutorial nonsense, and little linearity--just a kid exploring on an adventure. Lovely!

My one complaint might stem from it being a little too similar to ALttP, although that does make for a super strong foundation.

Fudge! That's what that's for!? I have a ton and I've just been collecting away. I can't find again where I met that creature so I haven't gone back, lol. Now I'll really search.

Okay I just finished, took me ~ 30 hrs. and I believe I got everything except the red tunic, I simply could not find that sucker (and I thought I was being so thorough), oh well I guess that it gives me something to look for during my next play-through, hero mode baby!

Some thoughts:

> My favorite Zelda.

> The most charming game I ever played, full stop.

> Incredible music, simply beautiful from beginning to end.

> Not difficult, I only died 5 times (which I believe is more than I died in Wind Waker, I seem to remember never dying at all in that game). Not a big deal to me, I don't play Zelda games for extreme challenge.

> The most fun I've had with my 3DS.

> The smaller dungeons made playing on the train a lot easier, I remember getting lost/stuck all the time in LTTP on the GBA because I couldn't remember where I was supposed to go next, it was meant to be played in marathon sessions but this game is "bite-size" friendly.

> I have so much hope for Zelda on Wii U now, if this is the new spirit of Zelda I like it, I like it very much.

> Could be streamlined even more, for example wish you could save anywhere.

> I'm going to play LTTP again soon, will be cool to have a direct comparison of how things changed.

@DrFinkelstein
Ha, well I'm glad I'm not the only one! I guess they didn't explain it, she could have said "for every ten babies I'll upgrade a weapon" but I guess they just wanted you to find them out of the goodness or your heart.

I finished it the other week too, only missing a few heart pieces, and I have 2 Streetpass challenges left to do (the bracelet and win 20 times).

I'll concur with general opinion and label it a great Zelda game. It did a LOT of things right, and was basically perfect LTTP sequel. However I have one teeny gripe.

The item rental system. Now don't get me wrong- The whole 'non-linear, do dungeons in any order' part of the game was great. But to achieve it you have ALL the weapons available in one place from almost the start, and the only requirement is that you farm Rupees (which lets face it, was pretty easy).

I understood why they did it, but that's not what I look for in a Zelda game. I *LIKE* stumbling over a new item or ability and realizing 'Cool I can go THERE now!" Could it not have been possible to scatter these items instead? Hide them around the Overworld so that finding one actually feels like an accomplishment, but still keeps the 'non-linear' nature of the dungeon completion intact.

Might scare off teh casualz I guess, but maybe make these alternate scattered locations a feature of 'Hero Mode' instead. And make Hero Mode accessible from the start
