The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.9)  by

The latest entry in Nintendo's famous adventure series, The Legend of Zelda, is just about upon us! This game takes place in the same "world" as the classic SNES game, A Link To The Past, following a new Link on a new adventure through Hyrule, and an alternate kingdom, Lorule.

Time to grab the Master Sword once again, adventure fans. The world needs a hero, will you answer the call?

I'm very close to getting this game. Some people are saying it's the best Zelda ever. Of course, some people said that about Skyward Sword and let's just say I disagree with that opinion.

I remember that Skyward Sword conversation...

@DapperDave I disagree that this is anywhere close to the best Zelda ever, so there's that.

Different strokes for different folks. Everyone has a different fave Zelda!

I'll go on record and say that this is my favorite '2D' Zelda. I'm impressed and delighted like crazy for this title.

LBW is my favorite Zelda full stop, but I'm not the typical Zelda fan.

Maybe I should ask, if you liked this game what other Zelda's did you like? Then I'll understand those strokes. Get a sense of what tastes people have.

In order of preference:

1. Majora's Mask
2. Wind Waker
3. Skyward Sword
4. Ocarina of Time
5. either A Link to the Past or Spirit Tracks

ALBW will probably end up in or just above the tie for 5th. I'm going to give it some more time and a second playthrough before deciding.

I guess it would be worthwhile to mention that the Legend of Zelda is my favorite series, I've liked it all of my life, I've beaten all but one of them (FSA, ugh), and I prefer 3D Zelda games over 2D ones. That said, I still love 2D Zelda games a lot. I feel like personal history with the series and A Link to the Past in particular can hold a considerable amount of influence in one's opinion of this game.

I don't think I could choose a favourite Zelda. I actually find most of them to be quite different, and so I like them for different reasons. I could select which ones wouldn't be in the running, and those are Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Aages, Oracle of Seasons. That's the best I could do.

I'd rank my Top 5 as such:

5.) Twilight Princess
4.) Phantom Hourglass
3.) Ocarina of Time
2.) Majora's Mask
1.) Link's Awakening

A close 6th place would probably go to Minish Cap...or just tie for 5th with Twilight Princess. Ones I wouldn't put in my favorites category would be: Adventure of Link, Wind Waker, Skyward Sword. The rest are all good but kind of middle-of-the-road for me, as far as the franchise goes.

I do really enjoy A Link Between Worlds, though. It's a very, very good game, IMO!

Favorite 3D Zelda: Wind Waker

Favorite 2D Zelda: Link Between Worlds.

Favorite Zelda overall: The new grand champion, Link Between Worlds.

I've always preferred the top down Zeldas better than 3D.

Where would you place Link's Awakening?
12/13/13, 16:35
There’s a lot to read here, so I’m not sure what the consensus is about the game at the moment. I was expecting to love it as much as any other in the series (there really isn’t one I strongly dislike). But… I really was not into it. I still have to beat the final boss but I have zero motivation to do so. It was so paint by numbers Zelda, and the dungeons (save for maybe the Ice one) were just meh. I did like the freedom to choose the order in which you complete them, but that’s about all I liked. Super bummed. I have a feeling I’m in the minority, though.

Edit: Wait I lied... the music was phenomenal as well.

@GameDadGrant

Maybe 4th or 5th favorite 2D Zelda, behind LTTP, orginal, and Minish Cap.

Sorry.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Even behind Minish Cap?!?

....well, actually that game was pretty good too.

Kind of surprised so many people didn't care that much for Link's Awakening, overall. Oh well, at least it won #1 spot for Negative World's favorite Nintendo handheld game!

I might have to agree with you! It's tough though, I love Wind Waker so much. Wind Waker 2 on Wii U, do it Nintendo!
12/13/13, 18:20
Wait, how is Link Between Worlds 2D exactly? Wouldn't it be better just to say handheld vs home console?

At any rate I just got the master sword.

@Tranquilo
I see what he means, it's polygon but the gameplay is mainly on a 2-D plain. Maybe "top down" is a better description.
12/13/13, 18:25
@deathly_hallows

Yeah, "top-down" makes the most sense. Even though that's not entirely accurate either, when Link becomes a painting...
12/13/13, 18:30
@GameDadGrant
True, but it mostly accurate, ALBW plays more like The Legend of Zelda or A Link to the Past than it does Ocarina of Time or The Wind Waker.

BTW when will Nintendo make a sequel to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link? A modern side-scrolling Zelda? Could be cool! And it could be called Zelda II: II!
12/13/13, 18:39
I would probably say that this is my favorite Zelda ever so far, mind you, I've only played through the Wind Waker-style games to completion and about three dungeons of Ocarina of Time. Although I definitely go back and play through Ocarina of Time and a few other Zeldas as well.
