Have you ever played a 3D Sonic game and thought to yourself, "Man, this is terrible, I'm so glad I can escape this fast blue hell with portable game systems"? Well, now you're out of luck! 3D Sonic is unleashed from the TV, tormenting you on the go!

But what is this? I played the tutorial stage of the game...and it was pretty not bad! Here's some fast, Sonic-style impressions!

- Nice primary colors! All right!
- 3D effect is pretty good! Far out!
- Music's not bad! Way cool!
- Controls seem okay! Tight!
- Stage design already showing more promise than most 3D Sonic games! Awesome!
- CG scenes are horribly jaggy! Just awful!

Anyone else here hold their nose and take a bite of this canned mystery meat?

I'm curious about this, but I just recently picked up Batman: Arkham Origins - BLACKGATE, so the Blue Blur got put on hold for now. Actually, he might be put on hold for a while, since I've got Dual Destinies up next. Still, genuinely curious about this.

I wish we got a demo. I'm pretty sure there was a demo available in Japan. I have no idea why western territories didn't get the same one.

Oh man, after that nice tutorial, I was afraid the game might actually be good. After playing through the first two (of seven) worlds, I can rest easy knowing it's not! Here are some more fast, Sonic-style impressions!

- The 3D controls and fancy parkour moves are cumbersome! Raised my hopes and dashed them in record speed!
- The 2D level design is awful! It hurts my soul to play them!
- The camera is inexcusable in either setup! Extreme closeups are not Sonic's strong point!
- High-speed sections with obstacles that are impossible to see coming! Ouch!
- The badniks are boring! The bosses are tedious! Everybody sucks but Sonic!
- Extreme pop-in! Puzzling framerate dips! But it's kind of pretty I guess!
- The special stages use the 3DS gyroscope and make you spin like crazy and move the 3DS way above your head! One of the worst 3DS experiences I've ever had!

It's frustrating, because the new features have their moments when everything else isn't ruining the good times. There could be a decent game buried deep, DEEP underneath all the things that go terribly wrong. And it at least seems like they made some bold changes and put some effort into them, unlike with the half-assed 3DS version of Sonic Generations. But its minor successes are muscled out by all the same mistakes and shortfalls that always doom the series.

I've managed to force myself through plenty of bad modern Sonic games, but I don't know if I even want to keep playing this one. I think...I think I'm actually disappointed. Why oh why did I ever get my hopes up?!

Your impressions amuse me!

I dug my rental of Sonic Colors. How does Lost World compare? (BTW, some say that the 3DS version is better.)

@Anand Completely different game. I'll give Sonic Team credit for that, they drastically changed up the formula even though Colors/Generations were generally well-received and they definitely could have gotten away with a few more from that mold. I don't think the experiment worked out so well, though, and I definitely preferred what I played of Colors (on Wii) to Lost World (on 3DS).

As for Wii U vs. 3DS version, the videos I've seen of the Wii U version look better than what I played on 3DS.

The DS version of Colors was said to be better than the Wii version, even though the games are quite different. The Wii game lacked online multiplayer, which the DS game had - not sure why that happened. I will say that I've read/heard/seen the same thing as @Anand referenced above - the 3DS version of Lost World is better than the Wii U version.

Of course, most publications paint both games as being "meh" so it could just be moot.
