I got home and there was a package waiting on my dining room table. It was Sonic!

Has anybody else tried this yet?

I've made it to the fourth level of the first world, and the levels are pretty diverse. That's a great thing!

Big problem, though... Sonic controls like molasses. His default speed is pretty darn slow and he doesn't seem to have much momentum. BLAHHHH. I didn't notice this until the second world, which is from a 2D perspective.

Sonic is slow, and I mean, slower than in his original Genesis games.

The game has more going for it, so I'm hoping the control issue doesn't hold back my enjoyment.

NOTE: Thanks to Gui I realized that there's a run button. Strange for a Sonic game, but it makes the game play much better than what I described above. I'm sure the game explains this so I have no excuse!

They had this at the Mop and Grop shop I go to in Brooklyn a few days ago, assuming they just broke the street date like they always do! I'm interested in how the 3DS version turns out, anyone who gets it post your impressions!

You're holding down ZR right? That's how you run.

ZL is the spin dash.

@Guillaume
Really? R-really???
I'll have to try that out when I boot it up again. I'm getting rusty in my old age!
I'm sure the game tells you this during one of the tutorial things... I must've missed it.

EDIT - Yup, there's a run button. Sort of odd for a Sonic game, but it feels MUCH better now!
Thanks, Gui.

The reviews for this game are all over the place... love, hate and everything in-between. I've been following it since the first footage because I thought it looked like it was doing a lot of things right, but I don't think I can risk buying it at full price to find out whether I am into it or not.

I look forward to hearing more from everybody who has it.

Aside from the speed, how do the controls feel? Because that is without a doubt the most important thing for a 3D platformer to get right. If the character isn't fun to control, why bother...

Not falling for bullshit reviews here.

@ploot

lol, reminds me of the GameSpot video review where all the footage from the first half of the review is Sonic walking everywhere, barely making it past crumbling pathways and such. Eventually it looks like they found the run button, but I wonder how much that impacted their review...

Anyway, I'll be picking up the Wii U version after work and livestreaming it. I need a break from all the ghosts in Fatal Frame.

@Het_Nkik

Nice. Paste the link here, I'm curious about the game and would like to see a little more (but I probably won't get it until Christmas).

Glad you're back, by the way. I enjoy your posts, and your icon is...iconic?

@deathly_hallows Now I want someone to get the username "Grop it up" so that I can join forces with them and then together we'll be Mop and Grop.

@Mop it up
Hmm, I can maybe change my name? Alt account? I'm not nearly into HP as I used to be, the important thing is I keep the Metroid 4 ship!

PS: I hate run buttons, they should be against the law, it drives me crazy in Blackgate, holding down the B button everywhere I go, I absolutely despised it in Mario 3D Land, what exactly is the point? We have analog controls these days, and by these days I mean since Mario 64 in 1996 (and I guess on the Saturn or whatever it was earlier than that).

@deathly_hallows

But with a character like Sonic, it sounds like a run button is one of the things they did right... the character controls have been so spastic in some of the past 3D games. Two speeds gives the player more precision control than an analog stick alone could allow for.

As requested by ludist, Wii U stream is a go: twitch.tv/het_nkik

I played a bit last night. It's fun, but it seems pretty hard. I've died several times on just the first few levels. I get why they did it, but the run button is hard for me to get used to in this game. It'll click soon I'm sure though.

So I ended up playing through the whole game in one sitting.

A: I like the run button. Gets rid of Sonic's annoying slow-ass walk he did before building up speed like in Colors.

B: Most of the levels are alright with a few that are really clever. None were bad.

C: I really like the few auto-running stages and segments in stages where you only have to worry about left/right movement and jumping/attacking. It's basically older 3D Sonic gameplay without the pretense that you actually have full control over Sonic : p

D: The game gets pretty hard at the end, but some of those late 2D platforming levels were really good. Some really fun skin-of-my-teeth moments toward the end, especially on the last grind level.

E: The grind levels are awesome. They're basically DK minecart stages with some chill music.

F: I don't know why I went with breaking my thoughts up into letters but it's too late to turn back now.

G: This is the first 3D Sonic game I've played that had a "Sonic-running-towards-the camera" segment that was actually built around the view you have. No needing to be psychic and trying to guess where rings are coming up where you can't see or any bullshit like that.

H: Way too many cutscenes ohmagod.

I: I hate myself for laughing at the cutscenes.

J: Easily the least-mechanically broken 3D Sonic I've played.

K: Overall, I don't think it was an amazing game or even a great game, but it's a game I wanted to keep on playing and in which I felt 99% of the deaths were my own fault. It had some cool stuff I'm glad I experienced and I wasn't annoyed controlling it. So yeah, I think it's easily the best 3D Sonic game.

Perfect quote for the cover of the box!

I might actually have to look for a deal on this game right about now.

The Overworld part actually almost sorta looks vaguely like what 3D Sonic should be!
03/26/14, 22:21
Ok, this is just weird.
03/26/14, 22:41
How many wells must Sonic poison?!

Actually, I thought the demo was fun...

Hah.

But seriously, I really wish that more developers would make sure that their games are actually fun to control before they go and start making levels.

@Hinph
Metacritic don't give a shit about controls...
