Batman: Arkham Origins Review (Nintendo Wii U) (7.8)  by
This game drops in 27 hours and change! Who is getting it?!

I'll be cracking it open in the weeee hours of Friday mernin', probably around 12:30a (MH permitting..).

Anyone have a gauge on the supposed length of this puppy? Arkham City length? (I think someone said their ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED game had a similar size..)

As always folks, mind the spoilers.. SWEAR TO MEEEEH!

Adventure Line's revenge!

The Arkham City: Armored Edition framerate issues are SO overblown, it's ridiculous. The other console versions run at a locked 30 FPS. The Wii U game's framerate is unlocked, so, sometimes it dips into the mid 20's, but most of the time, it's in the upper 30's or lower 40's. Most people who complain about the Wii U game never played it...or don't even own a Wii U.

As for Origins, I picked it up Friday but haven't played it yet. I'm glad WB decided Wii U owners are worthy of the pre-order bonuses, that was quite nice of them!

From NeoGaf:

- Best framerate on consoles. They all have some frame drops but Wii U seems to have the least. Overall it seems to be Wii U > 360 >>>>>>>>>>>PS3 in this regard.

- No screentearing on Wii U.

- Better lighting on Wii U compared to PS3/360.

- All versions have glitches, including game breaking bugs but Wii U has less glitches than 360, PS3, or even PC with apparently no game breakers present. Including being able to actually do the Burnley tower correctly.

- Plus Off TV Play.

- Plus Map on the GamePad.

- Plus Achievements Posting on Miiverse.

- Minus Multiplayer.

- $10 less.

@OrbitalBeard I've seen Armored Edition being played several times at stores, its framerate issues are NOT overblown. An unstable framerate is far, far worse than a locked relatively low framerate. A locked low framerate is bad, but when you get lots of dips to the low twenties or teens it feels sluggish and can affect your combat performance, especially in bigger fights/challenge mode against 20+ people at once.

That said, it looks like Origins on Wii U more than makes up for it. See what they can get out of it when they don't fucking rush the port?

I hope to shit this is fucking true. I am so dying to buy this now. The Miiverse pics look REALLY good. Totally getting SC:Blacklist vibes from this. Might just go and buy this now actually. I really really loved City (never played Asylum). One of my GOTY's. And I was hugely late in playing it cuz I was being a cynical turd. I love being proved wrong, I truly do.

@Xbob42 @OrbitalBeard
Yup. I own the game. The framerate issue is not overblown. It's not being nit picky. People who don't notice just don't have the eye for it, simple as that, really. I guess ignorance is bliss in that case.I would have played much much much MUCH more than the fucking 10 minutes I did thanks to the horribly distracting shit framerate.

I've also played the game on both PS3 and PC and the framerate issues ARE way overblown. I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I own three versions of Arkham City and the PC is the best obviously, but the Wii U game's issues are very minor and it's definitely a good way to play the game, especially if it's your only option.

I guess it depends on how you play the game. I play it like a rhythm game because that's what it is at heart, timing and getting a feel for the flow of battle, if you're playing on a very hard difficulty or a challenge mode... well, imagine if the framerate in Rhythm Heaven suddenly tanked for no reason at random times, throwing off crucial timing. No fun.

@Xbob42

Eh, the only frame drops I've noticed are doing some cutscenes, which don't affect gameplay at all. Just to make sure my memory wasn't fuzzy, I busted out Armored Edition an hour or so ago and played for about 20 minutes, fighting a dozen or so thugs on screen at once. No noticeable frame issues at all, didn't seem like anything dipped under 30 fps.

If you're comparing the Wii U game to PC, it's going to lose, big time...just like every other game ever made in the history of ever. But if you're judging it against the other console versions, the differences are quite minor. And the gamepad implementation actually makes the Wii U game more engrossing and enjoyable. Add in off-TV play and it's a no-brainer. I would much rather play the game on Wii U than on 360 or PS3.

I'm pretty sure the issues with Armored Edition were only apparent when forcing 1080p. I'm playing the game right now at 720p and it runs very smoothly, and I am sensitive to slowdown.

That could be it. Wasn't aware there was such a feature on the Wii U.
10/28/13, 03:41
Wait. Wtf?

K so I bought the game and am about to start it.
10/28/13, 03:44
@Xbob42
Me neither. How do you even adjust that, @anon_mastermind?
10/28/13, 11:56
What are these "gamebreaking glitches?" I don't need that to happen. And please be as spoiler free as possible.

@Xbob42
@carlosrox

Maybe its because I grew up playing NES, but having the game slowdown, or something, for a few seconds at a time (or while something is loading) doesn't bother me ONE BIT. My goodness, if that is a "dealbreaker" for you, I don't know what to suggest. You guys are coming off as (not saying you ARE) somewhat spoiled and/or elitist. Seriouslah.
10/29/13, 01:39
@Mr_Mustache When an NES game slowed down it was badass because it meant there was so much crazy shit on the screen at once that the system couldn't handle it, and our little kid minds thought of it as some kind of cool slow motion.

Not so awesome when the framerate is just randomly all over the place. And please don't try to turn this around on us for having standards for performance. That's like saying you'd be fine if the Wii U as 5x weaker than the Wii and that anyone complaining is spoiled!

It's about progressing, not regressing. If it doesn't bother you, that's great, but don't berate me for it bothering me.

Anyway, the towers for unlocking fast travel via Batwing, the one at Burnley won't let Batman climb through a vent or something, so it can halt your progress (Or get you stuck, I dunno, not there yet.) but I don't think that's an issue on the Wii U, so you should be good to go!

@r_hjort
Go to Wii U system settings, set it to 720p.
10/29/13, 06:05
Game seems really good. Still a bit let down by how it runs but it seems better than AC.

BUT!! This 720p thing for AC is news to me. Does it seriously affect performance??
10/29/13, 07:20
So this game is pretty swell. I think playing on hard might have been a mistake though. The combat itself isn't too hard but the problem I am running in to is when you go from main story to challenge rooms to random crimes the speed at which the enemies attack you changes. This makes me counter too early on the slower enemies and underestimate how fast a strike would land from an enemy in a story mission. Time will tell I suppose. Aside from that, its a lot of fun.
10/29/13, 10:47
@anon_mastermind
Lol, sounds easy enough.
10/29/13, 18:26
Is it just me or does the game bombard you with enemies a lot more than AC did? Also find I never get an opening to use stealth since there's usually a bunch around and they're all facing different directions.
10/29/13, 18:30
@carlosrox There's absolutely a lot more enemies, the game is clearly designed with fans of the first two games in mind, who'd be pretty damned good at Batman by now.

You can still stealth just fine, you just have to be a little more patient and use your gadgets more often. A well placed Batarang can cause a lot of havoc!
