Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

I finally started playing this game recently. It's a good game! I'm not a big FPS fan by any means, but I've enjoyed some in the past (probably most recently are COD: World at War and Goldeneye, both for Wii).

I did finish up the campaign. Yeah, the campaign is extremely scripted and fairly linear, and the whole "hide behind cover and refill your health" is just kind of weird to me, but wow, the game has some amazing production values and very intense moments. There's a lot of fun variety since there are different kinds of gameplay besides first person shooter.

I've only started getting into the multiplayer a few days ago and having a good time. There are so many ways to play! Has anyone else played this on the Wii U?

So I've played primarily with the Wii remote and nunchuk because I have always favored pointer controls in FPS'es, but I seem to be having trouble customizing the control scheme where it feels just right to me. (This game doesn't seem to have the feature that allows you to customize dead zone, sensitivity, etc., as you are actually controlling your character in real-time). What do you guys prefer?

Also, maybe this thread can be the place for anyone interested in online play!

I think this right here is the reason I was going to skip this version. Why would they throw out all the custom options of the Wii games? It's the whole appeal of the game to me and without that, there's no point.

@Mop it up

Oh, the customization is there; I was just saying that I can't seem to find a way to play around with the customization in real-time to see the direct effects on how the controls change. (I think Conduit had that feature, among other Wii games).

Looks like there were other issues with the Wii remote controls as well. I don't know if some of this stuff has been patched or not (hard for me tell yet if I'm experiencing these issues or not).

@roykoopa64 Ah, well I couldn't remember exactly, but I remember there being something about the Wiimote controls not being good. I guess now that I have a Wii U, I should look it up and see if it's really the case.

Honestly I had no problem using Wiimote controls for the entire campaign except for one small segment where the inversion seemed to mess up.

The bigger issue for me right now is whether Wiimote controls are good enough to be able to compete against seasoned dual-analog players for online matches. I wonder if the customization is robust enough that I will be able to find a setting that suits the intensity, and I wonder whether the inputs are handled just as well as dual analog inputs through the online servers.

There's a 90% chance I'll be playing online tonight between the hours of 8:30 - 10:30 PM CST. I don't plan to play for two hours though, maybe one hour. It all depends if the baby decides to sleep without crying (I've got him all to myself tonight, so I'll have to drop the game to take care of him if necessary).

Feel free to jump in, anyone who is interested! Abdooooo expressed interest, but he might be busy tonight.

Oh, and today I found a neat little way to mess around with the pointer controls. I just jumped into a 2-player local match (by myself) and played around with the control options. I made the camera speed faster so I can turn quicker, and I decreased the bounding box (dead zones) as well. It feels more responsive, but the true test will be in actual combat.

EDIT: Jumping online now!

Oh, and just wanted to post this cool screen grab I got from an early Campaign mission (minus.com is cool, I'm now following @VofEscaflowne, what a great feature!).

Had a great night tonight playing public team deathmatches with Abdooooo! We lost some, we won some, but it was all good fun!

I started using more variety with weapons, and I actually pulled off some kills with the sniper rifle, at last. I got some 'shoot-from-the-hip' kills with the shotgun, and I killed three guys together with a heavy machine gun.

I still can't get a scorestreak though!

I liked this game, the multiplayer was really slick. Single player was exciting but way too scripted for my liking. However CoD was consuming all of my gaming time so I traded it in while I could still get 30 bucks for it. I heard they've patched the wii remote controls to be better now? It just wasn't fluid enough before so I always used the gamepad. Off TV was really nice. I'll probably get Ghosts if it's a decent port.

I guarantee Wiimote would dominate a dual-sticker if you could disable the damn lock-on feature in EVERY CoD title.

@roykoopa64

I had fun too even though I was having some technical difficulties!

When I spectate I see some of the higher ranked guys aiming for opponents even before they see them (like if they are around a corner or climbing up a wall). Is that normal? Its like they can see through the walls or maybe the lock on feature locks on before the opponent is visible.

edit: nm, i now see that there's a scope to see through walls. No wonder I'm getting $#!+ kicked.

@anon_mastermind

Yeah, I'm looking forward to Ghosts.

@Deerock69

Ugh, wish the multiplayer didn't have lock-on.

Wow, that makes sense how they pull it off then. That's a huge advantage!

The online multiplayer is so addicting, I'll probably keep playing some more and then call the game finished. I'm at level 23 now and according to Wii U activity log, I've played the game in total for 23 hrs (what a coincidence). There's no way I plan to level up to the highest possible level like other players have done, or try to upgrade all the different weapons. The cool thing is that they're doing a special event right now (until Friday morning, Nov. 1) where you get double XP to celebrate the release of COD: Ghosts. It's a great time to play!

I still don't know why I'm so bad aiming with the sniper rifle. Even if I hold the aim steady with the A button, I can't aim where I want fast enough. Maybe I should modify the pointer sensitivity again?

I still can't activate a scorestreak! I imagine that I would probably get to that point if I kept playing and unlocking more and more stuff to become the killing machine that many other online players have become.

Of course, I'll still hop online to play with any of you guys and gals, though it seems unlikely given how few have shown interest. Oh well!

It'll be time to move on to Ghosts anyway...

I played a little bit online last night (remember everyone, it's double XP week!). Although I do enjoy a good online match, more and more I am finding myself simply being frustrated by the whole system. Every time I play a Public Match (where you can level up and earn XP), I am constantly among elite players who have seemingly maxed out their levels and their weapons, and they can basically just mow down everyone with ease. I simply don't stand a chance and can barely manage to pick up a significant number of kills.

Hmmmm, there is another online mode (League Play) where you can play against other players at your level, but you don't earn XP? It would be nice if I could play for XP among those players! Anyway, I should probably try it out.

Also, I wonder why does everyone like playing Team Deathmatch mostly? I like to play all the different modes, but when you look at the percentage of people online and what modes they're playing, there are very few people playing anything else, like Multi-Team, Free-for-all, Kill Confirmed, Domination, etc. These modes are fun and interesting, but the small online community makes it hard to find matches.

Of course, this is probably due to the game's age and the fact that Ghosts is coming out soon anyway.

Honestly surprised people still play this. I had much trouble finding matches around launch time. Is that still the case? Has the community grown at all? I remember seeing people in the low hundreds playing, at best.
10/30/13, 20:37
@carlosrox

Whoa, launch must have been rough. There's always at least 1000 people playing whenever I jump on, and most of them are playing Team Deathmatch. Suffice it to say, it's very quick and easy to jump into a match every time I play and have a full game (12 people I believe).

@roykoopa64 Yeah, the Call of Duty games on the Wii had similar problems. Even though Black Ops had way more people playing than what you're reporting, a large majority of them were in TDM, especially at night. You typically had to play on weekends to find enough people playing other modes, but the problem was, with only a handful of games running, you didn't have much choice if you didn't like a group of players. I think a part of it may be that people go where the population is, and then things snowball from there as everyone starts doing that because they don't want to wait for a room to fill up.

The Xbox 360 version doesn't have this issue, although TDM is still by far the most popular.

I've totally gotten into Cod over the last couple of years. I played Black Ops II and Ghosts on Xbox 360 so I could play with my brother and sister. I got Advanced Warfare for Xbox One because that's kinda my default system right now. But BO2 is still my favorite. There's just something about Treyarch's game. I think it's a combination of everything. I generally like their map design. For the most part I like the weapon balance. Their unlocks and prestige systems works well for me too.

Well the reason I'm posting this now is that because of my love for this game I decided to rent this just to see what the online is like. First off it took me awhile to get the controller set up to where I liked it. Look inversion on, sensitivity up and then up a bit more. And finally get the button layout right. The problem is I don't think there's an exact same button layout as the 360. Maybe the actions are mapped to the same button, but the position is different between xbox and wii u. I kinda got used to that. It helps that 90% of controlling this game is (at least the way I play it) is in the sticks and shoulder buttons. All I really had to get down was where the reload button was.

And after that I tore the place up. Now I put a crap ton of time into the 360 version so I know map layouts, spawn locations and general strategies. And I'm guessing people who choose to play Cod on Wii U aren't mostly going to be pros. There were some good players on there, but I was topping the leaderboard most games by a long shot. I had something like a 3.65 K/D with the default Assault Rifle. And that's without most attachments and perks. I'm more of a 1.2 to 1.3 K/D person in the other Cod games I've played. It was just fun to jump in and wreck house.

@gojira
Let me know if you ever want to play! I've never tried Blops 2 online but I played a little Advanced Warfare and it was super fun.

I actually have this game since it's so cheap, but I haven't even opened it yet. But I would if someone here wanted to play some!

I have this game as well, haven't played in a while but am always game to return to it. We'll have to setup some time to play. May not have time until after Christmas due to holiday plans.
