Need to download this once I finish Batman, 3DS keeps bringing it, I can't keep up!

Just finished up the 2nd episode. Really liking it so far. It does seem to lead a little more but I had still had to think about what I needed to present and I'm sure the last half will be more subtle with the hints.

I also like how they made some things easier to navigate. I like that when investigating the game marks what you've checked so you aren't constantly checking the same things over again because you forget. Also I like that when moving from one area to the next you can just go directly instead of going to the right screen to open up that particular branch. Saves some time and removes some tedium.

So how are you guys doing?

I thought case 1 was a pretty strong intro case, with an appropriate number of twists and some neat contradictions. The breakdown was way above average too.

Case 2 was a little clunkier-feeling to me. The events in it never quite added up entirely, and I was a bit bummed that they revealed the killer at the beginning. It did have a great stand-out character, though: Filch!

I'm almost at the end of case 3. And boy, something about this case just really clicks for me. I really like all the characters (really, all the new characters here are excellent) and it's had some of the funniest moments of the whole series. And it even has some nice emotion. The mystery element is quite good as well!

There are a couple disappointments. While the typos don't really bother me, the game definitely points out contradictions more clearly. There've been plenty of moments where I'm ready to squeeze my brain muscle over a testimony, when Apollo or Athena suddenly point out stuff like "But wait, wasn't there a problem with that...?" at several points. It's like in Zelda when Fi or Navi points out the solution to a puzzle--let me do! It can be frustrating getting stuck on the game, but it's satisfying to figure out a good contradiction, and this game definitely has those. I just wish it was less obvious sometimes.

Otherwise, I'm greatly enjoying it. It's hard to go back to the carefree days as a Pokemon master now...why catch creatures when you can catch criminals?

Just got the game last night, after quietly giving up on trying to enjoy Fire Emblem.

@Guillaume
My copy Fire Emblem is still in the shrinkwrap.

Andddd.... I just bought Dual Destinies! WTF is wrong with me?

@TriforceBun Case two is pretty odd, it's not really gripping me like case one did, although the prosecutor is pretty hilarious. Nice to hear case three is better.

And yeah, the game is definitely more hand holding. Which is a shame to me, because it's not like the games were ever THAT hard, and I liked having to sift through testimony and try to piece stuff together. But now the game often points me to the specific piece of testimony that might have a hole... doesn't this sort of defeat the whole point of having a bunch of testimony to sift through?

I bought the game, but who knows when I will play it? TOO MANY GAMES!!! Glad to support the series though.

@TriforceBun I liked Case 2 a lot, mostly for Filch, and Jinxie and Tenma were pretty fun, too. They do some really fun things with character animations in this game. All the expressive, dynamic new characters make returning characters (and their lack of new animations) look dull.

Case 3 was pretty good, though I'm finding the whole "dark age of the law" spiel extremely tiresome already, and since the case's characters and running theme all sort of spring from that, it's a bit groan-worthy at times. And I thought the murder solution ended up even more strange and unbelievable than in the second case. All the character twists were great, though.

Are the hints really that much more direct this time around? I seem to remember things being pretty clear until the final case or two in the other four games as well.

But yeah, loving this game still. I marathoned the whole third case last Sunday, actually, and haven't played since then. Trying to savor it, you know? Ace Attorney games don't grow on trees.

It's weird, the game sort of hammers in some things more than necessary, yet a few plot points (such as how some of the murders ended up being orchestrated) could use a little MORE explanation!

But yeah, you do hear things like "the ends justify the means" and "dark age of the law" a whoooole lot in that case.

I mainly liked case 3 for its cast. The mystery itself was good, but the characters are really going to stand out to me, to the point where I'd be disappointed if they don't show up again. I like one or two of them more than most of the regulars!

Just finished the second case.

I wasn't a huge fan of the case overall, but that whole line of logic bit at the end was pretty neat.

I beat the game!

As expected, the final case was pretty mind-bending. It had some nice fan-service that I kinda missed from AJ:AA, and one of the biggest surprises of the series!

All in all, I'd say it's a very worthy game in one of the best new franchises of the century. The mysteries were generally compelling and full of twists, and there were at least a few big, surprising moments in each case. Just as importantly, several characters also really stood out to me--the leads (Phoenix, Apollo, Athena) were all excellent, as were Blackquill, Fulbright, Filch, and Aura. Of special mention is pretty much everyone introduced in case 3: Hugh, Robin, Juniper, Scuttlebutt and Professor Means were all plain awesome and I'd be sad if we didn't see at least a few of them in future games.

On the downside, most of the murders themselves ended up being overtly-convoluted, even for AA standards. I still don't really have my head wrapped around the sequence of events in cases 2 and 3, as a lot of the smaller details end up getting lost. In that way, it's not quite as tight as the best the series has to offer. Also, gameplay-wise, there's a loooot of nudging in the correct direction. There was too much of this:

"Do you have an objection, Mr. Wright?"
"Hmm...maybe there's something wrong with this aspect..."
*present the only evidence related to what your attorney just mentioned*

They give away a lot of the contradictions too easily, or phrase them in ways where it's very clear what to pick. I do like how a lot of elements were more streamlined, but it's nice to get stuck every now and then.

All in all, though, a solid game. I'd rank the cases as such: 5 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 4, and the games... T&T > PWAA > JFA > or = to DD > AJ > AAI

Bring on the DLC case!

Wait, there are 5 full cases PLUS a DLC case?

Sick! I was thinking 4 plus DLC, because every other game was 4, right? Except the first, but that was originally 4 and then released in the West with the bonus case or something?

Welllll, it's sort of true, but with a "but."

*semi-maybe-spoilers*

There are five cases in the game itself, but fans speculate the last case of the game was actually split into what we currently have as 4 and 5. In other words, 4 is fairly short and directly leads into the events of 5 to the point where they feel like one pretty big case. But yeah, there are still technically 5 cases plus the DLC case coming soon. Trials & Tribulations and Edgeworth's game were 5 cases as well.

Just finished the game. I had a great time playing it.

Only thing I really missed was the complete lack of Gumshoe and Maya (outside of a very small cameo). I was hoping that having Edgeworth involved with the final case would bring in Gumshoe for some classic Gumshoe.....ness. Ah well.
11/06/13, 11:16
Although this game held my hand tighter than any of its brothers, I really enjoyed the cases overall. I'm not sure where I'd place it in the grand scheme of things, but it's neat to see the office inhabited by so many great characters.

@chrisbg99
Yeah, since the original final case took place seven years prior, it would've been cool to see if Gumshoe was involved. Ah well, it was nice to see a grown up Pearl and Edgeworth was as awesome as ever.

Recently finished the first case, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Probably gonna play a bit more Y before case 2, and this is why I never finish games.
11/07/13, 05:50
I finished case 2 today. Although it's not my favorite case ever, I think pretty much all of the characters involved really grew on me and there were enough twists and turns to keep it exciting.

On to case 3!
11/07/13, 05:59
DLC case coming next Thursday. Six dollars.

I still haven't started the fourth case yet, been playing other games in the meantime. I'll probably get back to it at the end of the month after A Link Between Worlds.
11/13/13, 20:24
I hear good things about the DLC case in this game, actually. Six dollars is a little higher than I was hoping, but I'll still bite--my wife and I are both eager for more courtroom drama.
11/13/13, 20:32
Hmm...how long would you guys say the last two cases take? I might try to fit them in this week, but if they're marathons like most AA finales, I may have to save them for later...
