Nintendo Direct Tomorrow, October 1st 2013

Is anyone excited? It'll be a look at games being released by the end of the year, so I expect some footage of Link Between Worlds, the 3D Mario game, and maybe even a moment on Wind Waker HD since the physical copy is not out yet.

What are you hoping to see?

@deathly_hallows

I think you bought your ticket to the "SM3DW is underwhelming" train after the first footage, got caught up in arguing your position, and now you're too entrenched to jump off, even after seeing an awesome trailer that would have otherwise excited you. It's okay, you can admit it. There's still plenty of room on the hype train. It's where you belong.

I'd like to board this hype train too, and the revamped soundtrack is moving me toward the ticket booth, but I'm still sort of stuck on the Where's My Galaxy 3 Train. Maybe my lower expectations will make the game surprisingly enjoyable when I pick it up in November.

@TriforceBun

Galaxy 3 is currently in "When it finally comes it will make the wait worth it" Station, so you might as well enjoy 3D World for what it is. Because before you know it that other train will come chug chug chugging along and no amount of checking your watch will get it here any faster!

I dunno how you could see a trailer with a bunch of stuff we've never seen before in a Mario game and say its "been there done that".

But it seems like you recognize your place ;)

Can't play Galaxy 3 with the ladies in our lives though.

Well, you can, I guess, with point and shoot 2nd player mode, but eh... my lady likes playing actual games when she plays games.

I'm guessing the DK delay was due scheduling rather than it not being finished.
They're giving Sonic and Rayman some room to breathe - having to compete against Mario 3D World and DK would have been unfair (and overkill tbh).

I think it makes sense to save DK for a time when there's space in the lineup.

To busy playing the brand-new-fun-town-Killzone-Vita to notice D:

Some dude from that NWR site

"At E3, Super Mario 3D World seemed like a fun romp, but nothing particularly special. I had the chance to play the game again last week, and my expectations were completely realigned. In one word, the game is playful, with a level after level of creative construction and an attention to handcrafted level design that left me laughing and smiling."

Etc.

It's weird that the some of the same people who say SM3DW is old hat want Galaxy 3, when we've already seen more of that series and obviously has been on consoles, unlike 3D Land. I guess it comes down to the "epicness" stuff that I consider bullshit.

My thoughts, though surely will be expanded in an upcoming podcast.

Super Mario 3D World: The game looks stunningly beautiful. It looks full of charm and even a bit more... silly and wonderful. Bowser's animations especially. The lighting looks awesome. I loved those sunset levels. The duplication mechanic is interesting but I was more excited to see a Hammer Suit and well all the different suits really. What's with that Goomba suit? Music is great too. The trailer music though really seemed to be composed for it in mind. That or this was well edited. I loved Super Mario 3D Land and I cannot wait to love this even more.. I think. HD baby! Plus I am so excited to play this with my girlfriend. Christmas should be loads of fun this year with friends and family.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: Looks rather fun. I've never cared much though for this kind of compilation. I bet the music will be epic though. I know the past games have had awesome soundtracks.

Super Smash Bros. 4: The inclusion of Sonic makes me quite stoked. I don't quite get why we are censoring it in the thread where we discuss what was revealed in the Nintendo Direct but I guess if people would rather not know about that tid-bit while still learning all the news in one place, we must. I'll give my thoughts further in the other thread. The footage looks good though.

DLC: Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land... pretty cool to see how Nintendo has been doing DLC. It's a mix of low prices and freebies that makes me happy to see added content to already packed titles. No games feel cheapened or lessened.

Lego: Marvel Superheroes: Looks damn good. Looks as good as Lego City Undercover from a graphical standpoint. I wonder how much like Lego City it is. I'm not interested really in the themed games but I'll keep an eye out on this. I don't really give much a shit about superheroes in general... but I could if it's fun enough.

Outset Link Shirt in Animal Crossing New Leaf: I love it. I instantly used it at work. I was already playing a bit on my lunch. Looks slick. Too bad I only have TEN slots... and I can't save this design in my Abel's.

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: Changing up the convention to go back to Zelda 1 where you can play dungeons in different orders... I'm curious and excited. However I hope it's not just "go buy the item from the shop now". In Zelda 1 you still could get new important things from dungeons. That better not be lost. Graphically it looks beautiful. I am psyched. Zelda looks great too. Love her model.

@Zero

Some of the "etc" that I am happy to hear:

My latest play session of Super Mario 3D World laid to rest fears that Nintendo is allowing Mario to become stale. Mario and company’s latest escapade is full of creative new powers, humorous situations, and a relaxed treatment that more clearly than ever says, “this is what a Mario game is meant to be.”

I'm wondering if the ability to purchase an item instead of just renting will be unlocked by finding or doing something in a dungeon. That would strike a good balance between the old way and the ability to get an item to use temporarily at any time.

@Jargon I like "epicness". Also the Galaxy games were just plain amazing, while people are considering 3D World to be potentially at the level of 3D Land, which was just "pretty darn good but not Galaxy level". Whether or not they should be thinking that is another story.

I've been excited about this game ever since I got to play it longggg ago. It's just plain fun. And a 4 player 3D platformer with tight Mario controls and all... definitely a new thing. Shirley will be back then too so we can play it together.

But yeah, it has a lot new, so not sure what people are worried about there. At least, after this trailer.

3D World looks like Galaxy with a fixed camera angle. And half the levels in Galaxy had fixed camera angles anyway.

@Secret_Tunnel
Yeah, I have to say, having not played 3D Land, a lot of what I saw in this latest trailer made me think of the Galaxy games, except with seemingly larger land masses to run around on. There is tons of potential for crazy gameplay mechanics in there! Can't wait!

@TriforceBun
It'll come. I doubt it'd be called SMG3 though. I'd wager that game to be another all new idea. Galaxy feel, but not the same setting or world. Also I would expect a new main mechanic or hook.

That was my fear too. Just buying something from the shop instead of getting it from the dungeon isn't paticulary great IMO.

Chat was being screwy towards the end last night, but before I left I put forward a better idea for this non-linearity thing.

It involves designing the dungeons in such a way as that there are actually multiple ways to complete them. The easy way requires getting the necessary 'dungeon weapon' from wherever it happens to be elsewhere in the game. The harder way(s) require a bit more...creativity. Like in Zero Mission where the 15% run required you to find alternate routes past obstacles you would have otherwise needed a specific item for.

That way, not only would you be able to do the dungeons out of order, but you could customise the challenge and experience within those dungeons depending on the items you used. It'd require some absolutely stellar level design, but I reckon Nintendo could pull it off if they tried.

Even cooler would be if they had some optional dungeon areas that require you to come back later after the main dungeon has been cleared. Kinda like they tried to do in Skyward Sword when you had to revisit that first temple for the water. Except, you know, better.

I forgot to mention, HELL YES for the whole Nintendo Zone Streetpass thing moving from one pass to SIX! Awesome sauce! I'll literally go out of my way for that kind of action. Bring on them puzzle pieces!

I really want the shirt the guy was wearing. They should sell that on Club Nintendo.
