Shocktoberfest: Enter The Nightmare -- A Month-Long Journey Through The Horror Game GenreWhen does this start?Shocktoberfest begins on October 1st, and will last the entire month of October, ending at 11:59 PM on Halloween night. What should I play?Anything that falls under the classification of a horror game. Survival horror, action horror, a horror-themed FPS, anything with zombies, etc. In the interest of having fun, this can be more of a loose definition of what defines a horror game, and constitute anything that is more-or-less "horror themed". So games like Gears of War or even Luigi's Mansion are fine. For me, it's very much the same outlook as Backlaugust -- I've got horror games in my backlog, and it's time to play them. How many games you want to play is up to you, whether that's just one game or a few games. Any platform, doesn't matter. They can be new games, old games. Even horror games you've already beaten long ago and want to replay. You don't have to choose all of your games up front; you can if you want, but it's fine to just take it one-game-at-a-time.Who should participate? If you: a. Enjoy horror games and/or b. Have at least one horror game in your backlog and/or c. Plan on buying a new horror game (such as, I don't know, ZOMBIU!!!!!!!!) you should do this. The purpose of this is a little less about seeing how many games we can beat, but for everyone to share in the experience of playing something scary. A good horror game can be a tough thing to get all of the way through to the end, but with some moral support from the rest of the community that's going through the same thing, maybe we can all make it back into the light by November! That's what it comes down to -- having fun, and being scared shitless. And being scared shitless is a lot more fun when being scared shitless as a group. One last thing -- for your fellow NW-er who hasn't played every game, try using spoiler tags whenever possible for anything major that's story-related, or just in general anything that should not be spoiled. So, "I can't believe Leon died at the end!" instead of "I can't believe Leon died at the end!"Completed (18)

@r_hjortThe bulk of the game is Jill's campaign (and frankly, it would have been better had it just been her campaign). It's about 3/4 playing as Jill, and then the game jumps around a lot. It's a pretty good game. It does some things that hearken back to the glory days of RE, but it still is very much geared to be accessible to the RE4 audience, and that's where the game falls apart a bit for me. It's a definite improvement over RE5/RE6, but it could have been so much more if they just made Revelations the game for the old fans. Instead, Revelations tries to satisfy both parties while RE6 is going after fans of other, more popular franchises. It's a solid game that I'd still recommend, it's probably the best we can expect from Capcom going forward. I can't wait to see how bad The Evil Within humbles their recent output... @ZeroSaw that earlier today, and was gonna post that as well. Wish I had only bought the first Fatal Frame a few weeks ago, I could have saved a few bucks. @JargonSame, I doubt I'm ever going to go find all of the gems. The structure of the game really bothered me in that regard. I always felt like if I wanted to find a gem on the first pass, I had to go explore as much as possible because I may never get the chance to go back there. But then, I would feel like I was wasting time going off-script to areas that I didn't need to go to, and was doing a disservice to the mission itself. A "free explore" mode for each mansion would have given me a lot more incentive to go back and try and 100% the game. |

@gojira Nope, I have not played Dead Space and have no intention or interest to. My sister likes these kinds of games more than I do, but I still like them. We've played the House of the Dead games on the Wii and had a good time, and Ghost Squad is due up next. I like Link's Crossbow Training also, but sadly there's no co-op mode there. Funnily enough, my sister is actually someone who likes story in games (she likes FFXIII for example), and she still didn't like the idea of Dead Space Extraction. We think it's a bad shooter because of all the story, there's just too much downtime and not enough action, and what is there isn't all that good. It felt like over half the game was story and nothing to do. As for alt fire, she didn't like having to twist the Wiimote to activate that. She was never sure how far it was supposed to be turned, and didn't think it was comfortable to hold it that way, so she ended up never using the alt modes. I still did, but I agree that it's needlessly clunky. I think short-range weapons in a rail shooter is a strange idea that doesn't really work, especially when enemies have as much HP as these things, but I can see how someone would enjoy the novelty of that. |

I started up Fatal Frame II last night and finished the introductory chapter. Already feeling certifiably creeped-out, a lot of that maybe due to this being a much better-looking game than the first one, but also the game is so damn dark! The game defaults the Brightness setting to be on Max, and I'm thinking "this seems excessive" so I toned it down to medium, but then I couldn't see anything! Granted, the game starts you out without a flashlight. I'll see if I have to turn it back down if things get a little too bright now that I *do* have a flashlight. But I'm definitely getting a darker, more sinister vibe from this game at least in the early going, and the improved visuals are definitely contributing to that. Some noticeable changes from the first game already, mostly regarding combat. It's already been a crash back down to reality, after finishing the first game with my nearly fully-maxed out camera, and now starting back at the beginning. But beyond that, the camera itself has some limitations that the first game didn't have. You now have to wait for your film to load between shots (you didn't have to in the first game), so you can't rapidly fire off shots which now makes every shot count a lot more. It also just seems a lot more difficult to capture a ghost in a shot in this game, in general, even compared to the beginning of the first game when you had no upgrades. It was very apparent in the first game when you could take a picture and do some sort of damage to a ghost, but it's less apparent here. The story has me confused in the early going, much like it did in the first game; the two main characters having very similar names doesn't help... @ZeroI'm not sure how I'd recommend you play it. I played all of the episodes within a 4-5 day span last holiday, and condensing that all into less than a week didn't give me much time to recover from how horrible I felt at the end of each episode. Lining up all of those repeated gut-punches and heart-pounding moments within days of each other made me feel so demoralized and exhausted when I was done. I can't really say which would be more effective: spacing them out and allowing for time to look back and reflect on your decisions, like with how the episodes initially released, or to do what I did and have it be one continuous nightmare without any emotional relief. I think there is plenty of merit to either approach. Like, it's tough for me to be like "I recommend playing through it in one week so you can feel terrible at the end like I did!" because that sounds like a bad idea on the surface, but at the same time I've never felt that way after playing a game before, and I can't speak to if it'd resonate the exact same way spaced out. In any event, enjoy! It's a great experience. |
