Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

The game doesn't release at retail till early October, but gamers can begin playing this title soon if they buy a special edition Wii U next week. That said, Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD! Whether you're someone who played and beat this game back in 2003, or maybe you're new and eager to get your Link wet, come here to discuss the game!

IGN.com just released their review and I believe that makes it the first review score for the title. What did they give it? You might not be surprised, but you can look at their review here. For the lazy,... 9.8/10

I have fond memories of picking the original game up from my non-standard Gamestop the night before release. They opened the doors at 10pm and let us get the game early just as the box literally arrived. I don't understand why things went down like that but I was always proud that I was nerdy enough to have been the first person to leave that Gamestop with Zelda that night. Now, I have it pre-ordered at another Gamestop, my normal one, because I want that badass statue offer. As Carlosrox continues to point out, the game looks beautiful and now that I've had an awesome Samsung HDTV for a little less than a year now, I am excited to finally embrace HD with Zelda and see how beautiful this game is at 40 inches and 1080p.

Bring it on Nintendo. I have what it takes.

This game is truly stunning. I saw videos before and wasn't impressed much. But seeing it in action in my TV is truly something else. And Link controls so smoothly too. This may be the best controlling 3D Link .

God I wish Nintendo let us have FULL res screenshots... I would make this my desktop wall in a Hyrule Field-minute!

My kids are loving this. I love that they're loving it, because this is truly a work of art to gaze upon. I wish I had been their age when it came out on the Cube the first time, but I was already a jaded twenty-something gamer. This will stick with them forever.

@DrFinkelstein

That would be a nice option that I believe they could definitely do in a future update. I can imagine the screen where you're posting to Miiverse and little flag in the corner that states, "Save Full Res Copy".

Loving it so far, never did beat it on gamecube :(

Man, I am having a really hard time holding off for the retail version. I have $25 bucks worth of eshop currency, plus $5 for the digital downloads promo, for a total of $30. I would only need to add about $20 & I could be playing this NOW!!!

Grrrr...I want to hold off mainly cause more than likely I will be able to get the Ganon figurine at Gamestop. In the past when there has been special promos like this at GS, they usually have received a few extras. Im friends with the manager at one of the GS stores here and he said more than likeky they will get a few extras and he will hold one for me.

I was really busy when they took the initial preorders, so I wasn't able to make it to the store. Overall, the figurine really isn't that big of a deal anyways. I just want to play the game now!

I only played the WW once and that was when it released. I remember parts of the game, but in a way, it would be like playing the game for the first time. I only remember the first part of the game, being on the island. Hell, I barely recall any of the dungeons.

I plan on playing through on Hero mode. I find it pathetic that I'm having such a hard time waiting. I want to download it right now so badly!

@gamewizard65
I don't blame you.
This game is pure divinity. Unapologetic brilliance. You really don't know what you're missing.

Game is an easy 10\10 for me.

Why not download now, keep the figurine, and sell/gift the game to someone? Spread the love. This game is a gift that should be shared.

@carlosrox

I've thought about doing just that. I know my youngest son plans on buying the game. My oldest son preordered the game already. Hell, there is even the possibility that my GS might not get any extra promo editions.

Decisions, decisions.

"Meh."
This one's going on the backburner for me. Not to say it isn't a good game, but it'll "become rare" more slowly than 3rd party games. Well, it won't become rare at all considering that it'll be sitting on a digital shelf for the whole generation (and possibly the next) whenever I want to buy it.

I'm looking forward to trying this game out, I'm curious if the changes will help me like this game better. Overall I enjoyed the game, but still feel that it is one of the weakest Zelda games, which is relevant of course, it's a good game in its own right. I also don't think I have played it in maybe 7 years. I know I got the GameCube game for Christmas of 2004 when it was a Player's Choice title, and I think I played through it just twice. I believe the game lists the date of the saves, so I could probably check and see when I last played.

My only two complaints lie in some of the overly midi cartoony tracks are a tad grating and that there is actually serious slowdown for a good few seconds at a time during really crazy explosions. Both bosses so far look absolutely astonishing, and it runs perfectly until you are treated to a nice slideshow when explosions and smoke happen. Unfortunate, and I wonder if it's something they somehow didn't have much control over due to the way they made the original game?

Everything else though is top notch. I've dropped every other game I was playing in favor of this. I don't want it to stop but I also want to see every next room in the game. Lighting is so fantastic and borders on some fourth dimension shit. Great illusion of depth and weight. Amazes me how damn clean it looks. Is Nintendo the first to bring a seriously good looking clean game at 1080p to home consoles? Gotta be best IQ I've seen in a console game.

When you go into first person and walk up to basically ANYTHING, you are treated to some extremely sharp visuals. Dem textures. And I can't describe how the colors scream in this game. It borders on ridiculous. I didn't know human eyes could perceive such colors.

This game and BSI prob take the cake for me when it comes to gorgeous games with gorgeous colors and art direction. I are ready for Nintendo's next wave. Star Fox me please.

Star Fox me please, too!

@kriswright
Yeah I'm not sure why but in very recent times Star Fox has really shot up the list for me. I want that almost more than anything. Yes, even moreso than Metroid and F-Zero!!

I just feel it's time! And Star Fox can be done justice once again!! Also, depending on what viewpoint they choose and how much crap they want on screen, it'd be quite easy to make a visually dazzling game. Some nicely modeled ships, some great space backdrops like planets, stars, quasars, and some nicely detailed characters to talk to during radio chatter, etc, as you have yourself an awesome Star Fox game! And then they can experiment a bit with an all-range mode type section!! They could even add top down AND side scrolling levels to cover ALL avenues of space shooting games!! Some more open ended levels would be cool too. I'd still want the focus on the behind the ship/cockpit gameplay though.

Sign me the FUCK up for that Nintendo!!! If ya need ideas I'm here all day :) !

Edit: Hugely off topic, sorry!

But yeah, WIND WAKER!!

Does anyone feel like they've made some tweaks to the combat system? Link has always been able to pull off combos in Wind Waker, but the forward thrust seems to have 2-3 stabs before going into the second part of the combo...don't remember that in the original. Talking very quick, almost no time between them stabs too. Not like you press B, he stabs, you press B again and he stabs again. It's like press B, stab-stab-stab, press B and the next part starts.

Also, FUCK MINIBLINS! They were just annoying before, but on Hero Mode, especially in some rooms, they are the Devil's spawn. They do minimal damage, but it's constant, and they just toss dozens of them at you from all sides...

Took this one today.

@missypissy
Yup I thought the same of the combat. Also, same goes for Z-Targetting? I swear that made that cam transition extra zippy.

Oh and I forgot to mention in the other thread: THE WIND WAKER ENCORE ISN'T GONE COMPLETELY, AT ALL! It will go away after you play it once PER SESSION. I originally thought it was only heard ONCE through the ENTIRE game! Bless my lucky stars that isn't the case!! I can still hear it once per session!! I'd still prefer a simple optional skip though.

That's pretty awesome. Gonna be a lot of nice shots like this in the coming months. I took some ethically questionable selfies with Medli sqatting down to be picked up. Celnography. LOL

@carlosrox

Combat is supposedly a "glitch". They shrunk the window down on how long enemies are invincible between attacks, so if you stab through them pretty far that window will be gone before the blade is taken out. Likely why I only saw it once I got the second sword, but it makes combat much faster on some enemies.

I actually still dislike how you can't do anything to a guy when he's down. You just sit there like an idiot waiting for them to get up. TP fixed that with downward stab.

I haven't played this version (but loved the original, it's like a top 10 game for me), but given the universal praise for the visuals, would you guys say it might be a good idea for Nintendo to do another cel-shaded Zelda for the Wii U? I mean one from the ground up, with models and textures built from scratch.
