Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

The game doesn't release at retail till early October, but gamers can begin playing this title soon if they buy a special edition Wii U next week. That said, Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD! Whether you're someone who played and beat this game back in 2003, or maybe you're new and eager to get your Link wet, come here to discuss the game!

IGN.com just released their review and I believe that makes it the first review score for the title. What did they give it? You might not be surprised, but you can look at their review here. For the lazy,... 9.8/10

I have fond memories of picking the original game up from my non-standard Gamestop the night before release. They opened the doors at 10pm and let us get the game early just as the box literally arrived. I don't understand why things went down like that but I was always proud that I was nerdy enough to have been the first person to leave that Gamestop with Zelda that night. Now, I have it pre-ordered at another Gamestop, my normal one, because I want that badass statue offer. As Carlosrox continues to point out, the game looks beautiful and now that I've had an awesome Samsung HDTV for a little less than a year now, I am excited to finally embrace HD with Zelda and see how beautiful this game is at 40 inches and 1080p.

Bring it on Nintendo. I have what it takes.

This would be a great first Zelda title. It's pretty much the easiest Zelda there is. I'm playing through on Hero mode, but my kids are working through normal.

Its pretty fantastic.

Played a little bit of it during my lunch break, only enough to get the Sword/Shield going...but it is a very nice looking game. The bloom takes some getting used to, but it gives off a sort of super tropical vibe. Playing on Hero mode for my first time through.

THANK GOD for the second screen. Seriously, ability to switch items without having to pause is huge.

Who is going to Hero Mode this? I plan to... when the physical copy arrives.

@DrFinkelstein

I do. I haven't played it since I beat it in the GameCube days so I'm curious how challenging it'll be. I've forgotten a lot of it.

@DrFinkelstein

I played the original about 7 times, so I'm definitely diving into Hero Mode right away

What's more accessible, Wind Waker or Skyward Sword?

Majora's Mask!

Same for me. To a T.

@DrFinkelstein I probably will, I found the game incredibly easy due to the counterattack.

@anon_mastermind I think Wind Waker is easier than Skyward Sword, so probably Wind Waker.

I STILL haven't been able to play this game. I had to get a LAN adapter for my Wii U since my router is so far away. And now, I'm doing a system update. Then, off to download Wind Waker.

Awww man, this game marks the first time I feel like I missing out on something by not having a Wii U, of course I could just pop in the GCN game to get my nostalgia but it wouldn't be the same...

So is this game running native 1080P, anyone know? Cause I bet that looks insane.
Posted: 09/21/13, 02:12:47
@deathly_hallows Yes, it's 1080p. However, there's some debate over whether it's 30fps or 60fps, but since there is a debate then that probably means that it's 30fps and some people have TVs that are trying to smooth it out to look like 60.

@Mop it up
Hmm, yeah, I wonder which is the lesser of two evils there, maybe 720P 60fps would have been better? Anyway, thanks, just watched the video review on IGN, game looks hot.

It feels like 30fps.

Hero Mode is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. The damage itself is still on the light side, only 1/2 a heart per hit, but NO heart drops EVER is the killer. On Dragon Roost Island, got 1/2th a heart left...no way to recharge :(

@Shadowlink
You had to pick the least accesible didn't you?

@Pokefreak911

Actually I had other reasons for picking that one

I'm so jealous of you guys I've seen online today playing this. I guess I'll have to hang in there for a couple more weeks.

I'm also thinking this will be my girlfriend's first Zelda game, but I think she'll be ok because she's used to 3D games, she just hasn't had a Nintendo console since the NES.

It's definitely 1080p, and whether it is 30/60 is tough to say, but whatever it is the framerate is ROCK SOLID. Since this isn't a twitch-fest, it doesn't really matter. Honestly, it feels more cohesive to me than 30 fps.

From everything I've heard, it's native 1080p, and it definitely looks it. My guess is that it's 30 fps, but pretty solid. There are occasional stutters (in the same places as the original, actually. When the water fills with all the ember particles flying, parts of the first boss battle).

It controls like a dream, though I dislike that they changed moving blocks back to one single button. And they switched the controls while using enemy weapons, too, which seems like an odd decision. Maybe people who haven't played WW before won't notice or care.

The game is gorgeous, though. My wife and I have both played through Dragon Roost and I just entered the Forbidden Woods (Forest? whatever). I'm playing on hero mode, she's not. And, ya know what? I died in Dragon Roost. Seriously. My only death before this in WW was when I let pigs trample me on purpose just to see the game over screen. Now it's a legitimate concern (though less and less as you get more access to bottles and more heart pieces). Just be sure to actually use those warp cauldrons on Hero Mode--sheesh.

I'm dreading playing this next dungeon. It has always been the low point of the game, to me. Really, for the series, in my opinion. I really think it is basically one of the worst dungeons in any 3D Zelda game. But at least there's a ton of fantastic game after it!

@kgtennispro A man after my own heart. I started playing last night, on Hero Mode, although I didn't play for more than a few minutes. Man, this game is gorgeous.

Loving the Miiverse stuff. Finding bottles randomly with pictures/posts from people is pretty neat. Need to start working on the selfies.

Hero Mode is what should be standard in all Zelda games going forward, unlocked from the beginning. Made Dragon Roost Cavern so much fun having to actually worry about getting hit, plus with only 3 hearts and only two real chances of healing on there (one near mid-way, the other at the end) it made for a much more enjoyable experience.

Also liking that we can turn off the HUD and gyro options, sucks that anything needing to use stick-aiming has to basically be mapped to R or else you start fumbling your fingers around.

Just made it to Forest Haven, got my Deku Leaf, and into the Forbidden Woods!
