Congrats on beating the Plague of Shadows! Nice work.

I haven't finished it yet. Got caught up in Epic Center's Chrono Trigger play-through, as well as the The Legend of Legacy demo and my own self-indulgence of playing through Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow again. And Super Smash Bros. online.

Too many games to play. What horrible first-world problems I have...!

But yeah, I need to get this done. Glad you liked it! How much time would you say you put into Plague Knight's campaign?

@GameDadGrant Took me about 6-7 hours to finish it, and another couple hours to get all the coins and do all the challenges.

Well that was confusing, I thought this was something you had to get into the eShop to download, couldn't find it anywhere, loaded up the game, it did an auto-update but I still couldn't find it anywhere...

So I put in the secret code.

I have no idea WHY I had to though. Definitely beat the main game.

@Zero

I, too, beat the main game and still had to put the code in. Oh well.

I suppose most people who beat the game but are still playing it also know about the update and have probably heard about the "secret" code to bypass the normal way to unlock it...

But maybe not. Weird glitch that might keep some from even knowing there is new content.

Finally sat down and played through Plague of Shadows over the last few days. Not really too much to say about it... if you liked Shovel Knight, it's a great remix, and considering that it is free there is really no reason to not check it out. I honestly don't know how different the stages are, so maybe my bad memory helps here, because it felt pretty fresh to me. Not to mention Plague Knight just plain moves and attacks differently so it really has a unique feel to it.

Honestly my only real complaint is that it was perhaps a bit too easy? Especially if you use the thing you get early on that lets you slowly float down after a burst jump, a lot of the challenge of the platforming is nullified a bit by that move. With that said I think the end stats said I died over 100 times so maybe I have no idea what I'm saying right now.

Great post from the developers about Shovel Knight's sales performance, player statistics, Amiibo details, and more.

I'm surprised that 32% of Steam owners have finished the game. That seems way higher than most games.

Cool info. Also this thread reminded me I should try out Plague of Shadows.

@Zero

I need to finish that game, err, start it. Beaten Shovel Knight but I was so hyped for Plague of Shadows and still haven't touched it.

@nate38

Especially considering how many people have probably played it.

@Zero

I heard it was very tricky so either you're quite good or I was misled. Hell, as long as it's fun I don't care!

@DrFinkelstein I don't think it was any harder than the regular mode? And in some ways easier? It really depends which power-ups you use though. For instance, there is this one power that lets you slowwwwwwwly float down after a burst jump, makes precision platforming SO MUCH EASIER. After I bought that power-up (early on) I would try out others on occasion but would keep going right back to it. I can imagine without using that it would have been way harder.

@nate38

Those 3DS stats...!
04/16/16, 05:00
@GameDadGrant

Nintendo in general is such a big piece of that pie.
04/16/16, 14:34
@DrFinkelstein It probably made a big difference that they launched the game on Nintendo systems first (and Steam) and then PS/XB like 6 months later. The ports even had cool exclusive bosses and stuff.

I wonder if they included all the Kickstarter backers in those sales totals and platform charts, as that would probably sway things even farther into the Nintendo/Steam pie slices. Although I guess 15k wouldn't make a big difference in a million anyway.
04/16/16, 16:10
@DrFinkelstein

Oh yeah. Considering how this game is such a "love letter" to old-school Nintendo games, it makes total sense. I'm glad Nintendo fans backed this game so well.
04/16/16, 16:31
I've heard that 3DS eShop games tend to do very well, relative to how well similar downloadable games do on other systems. Probably because it's harder to develop for 3DS.
04/16/16, 20:53
@nate38 Actually a little surprised they did 200k at retail, though I do have a friend at work who NEVER buys digital who bought a retail copy.
04/16/16, 21:41

Hard to believe it's almost been two years since this game launched. I wonder how long it's going to take them to get all the Kickstarter stretch goals implemented. At this rate they'll be working on free updates for Shovel Knight for at least a few more years before the game is "finished."
06/03/16, 21:20
This looks pretty cool. But yeah, I also feel bad for Yacht Club for promising some HUGE extra modes for a (perhaps disproportionate) amount of money. I wonder if they feel trapped by all of the extra stuff.
06/03/16, 21:36
It's weird, because didn't they already publish a retail version? But now it's no longer complete.

I dunno. I still have to finish this game. The first level was pretty fun...
06/05/16, 01:41
@TriforceBun From what I've heard the game made way more than they ever expected and they're all millionaires now so... I don't feel THAT bad for them. Though I'm sure some part of them wants to move onto whatever comes next.

@Anand You can still download the DLC stuff on the retail version mannnnn.
