DuckTales Remastered Review (Nintendo Wii U eShop) (9.0)  by

This comes out today! Who's on board? I'm downloading it when I get home for lunch.

One of the things I read is that the original NES music is in the game as well as the new remixes, so if you want to play the game a little more old-school, the option is there.

Also, there are online leaderboards...not sure how that works, I guess for money totals by level?

I will be downloading this today. I loved the original game and I really, really hope we get more Capcom Disney remakes in the future.

@OrbitalBeard

Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers would be fantastic. That game was pure NES gold.

I don't know what to download it on!
I'm not a huge achievements guy, but for some reason I like the idea of achievements for this game, so Steam would be great.

HOWEVER, the 360 D-Pad is poop, with every Wii U control option defeating it easily. Hmm....

EDIT - Controller wins. I shall Wii U this baby.

So has anyone gotten the chance to play this yet? I was initially thinking about it, but the price tag is a little steep and the talk of flow-breaking cutscenes (a feature most certainly not associated with most NES games) gives me some pause.

I played it briefly at lunch. I only made it through the intro stage before I had to run back here (stupid work). It's a basic tutorial stage with a boss at the end that sets up the stage select and gives the game more of a story to go off of. Plus you can dive in Scrooge's money pile, so there's that. It controls great on the Wii U Gamepad.

@TriforceBun

I was worried about the dialog breaking up the game too, but they aren't bad (and you can pause the game and skip them if you wish). They give the game a feel of an episode of DuckTales. Plus the voice acting is genuinely good.

$15 is normal for a digital game...plus you just bought EarthBound for $10 last month. This is only $5 more for a brand-new old game!

I came in here just to mention that you can do the Money Bin dive! It made me smile.
@TriforceBun
The level layouts are mixed up a bit so there are some surprises. Plus, the dialogue sounds like old-school Ducktales so it's a delight for me. I've only played the Amazon (and the intro stage) so far, but I feel it's worth the price of admission.

EDIT - Oh, there are lots of unlockables too, if you're into that sort of thing (concept art, TV show art, etc.)

This is a great remake!

The visuals are beautiful, the music is FANTASTIC, the voice acting is great and it's very challenging!

Each stage feels like an episode of the TV show. I'm loving this. If you don't want to watch the cutscenes, they're easily skippable. I'm very pleased with this so far. As a huge fan of the NES game, this is good stuff.

One thing that would have been nice for the Wii U version is adding the map to the Gamepad.
All the Gamepad does is mirror what's on-screen. That's great when you want to play it on the screen, but constant map access would have been a plus. Ah well!

EDIT - THEY DID and I'm crazy. Just press X when on the pause screen. WII U WINS!

I don't suppose there's going to be a demo for this?
08/13/13, 23:14
I saw some gameplay for this and the background mixed with the hand drawn sprites and foreground looks really off. It doesn't work at all.
08/14/13, 03:06
Hmm, it seems to be getting luke-warm reviews. Ah well, I'm enjoying it.

Gonna get this any day now.

Still mixed views on it, but what the hell.

And if they're gonna include the theme with the game, include the ORIGINAL theme, or something close to it. The one I've heard is barf.

Get yourself a special edition 360 pad, son. :p Still not the best in the world but better by leagues and leagues than the regular 360 pad!

What a delight seeing Ducktales find its way back into the limelight. The show was amazingly good fun, and the games based on it, a blast. Suffice it to say, I downloaded this "remastered" edition the moment I could.

The dialogue and such is fantastic, with the voices of the past and witty banter eliciting feelings of nostalgia like nobody's business. The game looks good, but mainly due to the character design/art. The levels themselves are okay. I think I like the look of the upcoming Mickey remake better.

My only real complaint is the music, sadly. It's fine apart from the game, but playing to it is a bit too much - at least for some levels. It's just too heavy, or whatever the term is for ever-so-slightly overpowering music. Granted, hearing the classic themes was a joy, just short lived joys. I believe the original music is locked away somewhere, and I hope to unlock such poste haste.

The game is also a bit more challenging than I expected, on medium difficulty at that. But, that's a good thing, as the hits I take mostly seem an error on my part.

After trying out each of the levels, I look forward to giving the game a more serious effort soon - but with the volume turned down a bit so as to quiet the noisy melodies a wee smidgeon.

Whaaaaaaaaaaa?? The music is superb, I say!
ALTHOUGH, I do feel like they snuck the Moon theme infar too much. You can catch hints of it in some of the other music. It's like they heard the Brentalfloss take on the song and went "YEAH! This melody needs to be everywhere!"

After beating the game on normal and unlocking about a third of the unlockables, I would suggest, if you are on the fence, maybe wait until it's on sale. I'm super-glad to have it, but nostalgia holds me tighter than most.

No, the music is okay, just not quite the take I was expecting/hoping for. I just get grumpy when remixes are taken to the more rock side of the remixing realm. It seems every compilation OCRemix (for example) puts together for specific game series, such as Kirby, EarthBound, and Animal Crossing, takes a sickeningly sour rock twist - with every song being a head banging tribute to very un-head banging classics. I like upbeat mixes, sure, but where appropriate. However, I have only played through each level of Ducktales Remastered once, so my appreciation for the remixes will hopefully take a turn for the better in time. I just have a strong adoration toward the the original tunes, and Ducktales in general. My expectations were perhaps way too high.

@ploot

Mannn. They stuck bits of the Moon in all over the place? Blach. I know that a lot of people are Moon Nuts, but the most "DuckTales" theme to me is the Amazon one, and my favorite. I love the "do doo doo doodoo" stuff where the "lyrics in the verse" would be, I guess? You know, before the "chorus!" (I have no idea how else to describe this without simply posting a video.)

What a rad song. Those "doo doos" are so awesome. I don't know why. They just strike something in me.

I hear ya regarding rock remixes, although I only got that vibe from the Himalayas.

@Mr_Mustache
I may have over-exaggerated a bit, but I definitely hear the Moon theme creep up during the stage select music, as well as the Himalayas level.
My favourite track from the original is Transylvania. The Amazon is pretty great, too.
08/14/13, 06:34
@Mr_Mustache

They did the Amazon's theme well. Like, it's really enjoyable. That's the only level that I've finished so far (aside from the intro level) and I love how it wrapped up.

@ludist210

I listened to some more old themes, and the African Mines is really awesome, too. Transvylvania, as you mentioned, also great.
