Just post about it a lot on Nintendo's Japanese Miiverse. Eventually, they'll release it on VC.

Hey, it worked for Earthbound.

So at long last I've beaten this game. I beat it on the 3DS version, but I figured I might as well talk about it here rather than starting a new thread for basically the same game.

Not only did I beat it, but I didn't die until the end boss and I got the medal for no continues (only a thing on this version, I presume). Was very satisfying. I also managed to get some different levels that I hadn't seen before.

I can't say I find this game as amazing as others do, but it was worth playing through, especially since I felt like my Nintendo fan resume was lacking haven never beaten it.

Now that I've beaten it, I would like to go through and play the rest of the stages, assuming it's not too much of a pain in the ass. Does anyone have any advice for how to tackle that task? Anyone who's played the 3DS version, is there anything to make it easier and more modern in this one? Seems like it's not always very apparent how to find an alternate route. I could just follow a FAQ if need be, I suppose, but I'd prefer a more organic experience if possible.

@Jargon

Basically there is a task somewhere throughout branching levels and if you complete it you make it to the next hard level whereas if you fail it you go through the easy path. The game is rather straightforward about what these are so if you hear a character tell you to do something that is probably the deciding moment.

@Jargon

Also the alternate routes were included in the manual for the N64 original, so GameFAQS isn't really a cheat.

In anticipation of the new Star Fox, I've returned to this game on 3DS trying to see if I can experience all the levels. Just started on a run attempting to do the hardest route (with a PDF of the original manual in hand). So far so good, made it past Aquas. It's nice to be able to stop in between levels in this version at least, but why oh why couldn't they go with a really modern approach and just have it so you can start at any level that you've previously gotten to. Oh well, there are continues added so I will just keep trying on the hard route until I make it all the way through. Then I'll figure out which other levels I have yet to play.

Not going to bother with medals or anything. If you could earn them in score attack mode (where you can actually just pick any level) then I'd consider it, but having to do them all in the story mode is just lame.
06/22/15, 07:30
@Jargon You can't just start anywhere that would make the high score system useless!

Um uh... other people did play for high score right?
06/22/15, 07:51
@Zero

Just have the person start with 0 points effectively making them ineligible for high score achievements.

Also there's already a 3DS and N64 mode, so they could just have level select in the 3DS mode and leave N64 mode for the purists.

@Zero

I did!

All expert medals here, yessir.

@Zero

My former roommate still has the highscore on my 3DS from the couple hours he played the game, and I can't beat it no matter how many attempts I make. He did say that the N64 game was one of his favorite games of all time, at least, where it never held that place in my heart.

Anyway, this thread got me to play the game again tonight, and I am once again in love with the stereoscopic 3D effect...

Boom, beat the game on the hardest path. No continues necessary. The little challenges for opening the alternate routes weren't nearly as easy to miss as I'd feared. And I'm not sure if you can do this in the original game but you can restart in the middle of any level if you know you've missed it and you can even replay the level you just beat if you ended up on the wrong path. Both cost you a life, but the game is pretty generous with those.

Still have a five more levels to play, one of them being a different version of Venom I guess. Some of them I just need to not trigger anything so that's no problem and the couple middle ones left I assume won't be too much harder to get to than the hard levels were.

What's the deal with Katt? There was no explanation whatsoever for who she is and what her relationship to Falco is. Mysterious. Is there a part in the game that explains it that I just missed?

Still not as in love with this game as others but it did get my kind of hyped for the new one since I'm assuming it will be more friendly for pick up and play and retrying levels to discover new stuff. Could be really good. I do hope the game is just one long campaign instead of the multiple paths thing. Some secret levels along the way is fine, but I'd prefer to experience most of the worlds in one go.
06/22/15, 11:53
@Jargon

Yeah you could do that in the original.

When I was going for my medal runs, particularly on Zoness, I ended up replaying that level a bunch of times- I did well enough to beat it, but missed the medal targets. But seeing as my scores were usually 200+ I was coming out positive on lives so I just had to keep plugging at it.

@Zero

OF COURSE we play for High Score. Lou and I logged two brand new Top 10 scores on my personal cartridge after not touching the game since the century it released in. Had you come to the Rochester Meetup, you could've stained my cartridge with your name -- FOREVER.

@Jargon

Katt is Fox's squeeze, isn't she? (And far predating the Star Fox Adventures Krystal?) When a dame comes between a man and his best friend, friction ensues! (And I'm not talking about Cinemax style friction, I'm talking about dramaaa.)

You don't think that Star Fox Zero will have branching paths? I already saw a spot in one of the Treehouse feed levels where it looked like they went one path instead of another. Pretty sure we'll have the choose your own adventure stuff agian.

@Shadowlink

Is Zoness the one with the green water? I don't think I ever medaled that one. So freakin' hard. And it was one of the ones that I rarely got the "hard" exit on as you have to take out all of the searchlights. Maybe I was just a dumb kid. I'll check my cartridge again sometime...

EDIT- Don't you need like 300 kills?

@Mr_Mustache

Well greeny-brown I guess. But yeah, the polluted muck planet with all the searchlights. And you need 250 kills. Totally doable, you just need to seriously abuse the charge attack. And take out every damn light.

250 kills. Second highest medal requirement in the game. You need 300 for Area 6. Man that stage is crazy.

Although I contend that 'expert' level Easy Path Venom is probably the hardest stage in the game. I don't think I even medalled it. Thankfully you can just nail Star Wolf on Hard path Venom to get that medal.

@Shadowlink

I had the Player's Guide for that game, so those numbers made my eyes get really big. I don't even remember Area 6. Is that in outer space? The one with the (cruise) missiles you gotta destroy is one of my least favorite, I think.

The one that is like Independence Day is my favorite. Love dogfights! (Naturally, the early Death Star missions on Star Wars games where there are trillions of TIE fighters are among my favorites in their respective venues, too.)
06/22/15, 13:32
@Mr_Mustache

Yeah it's in space, it's the one with all the battleships and starfighter waves. And the dumb monkeys who grow increasingly and hilariously panicked as you break through every line of their defence.

Then they stop you in your tracks with this bitch.

06/22/15, 13:38
@Shadowlink

Oh, yeah, that wasn't fun. You know, I wouldn't be surprised if we see A LOT of the same stuff we've seen in previous Star Fox games in Star Fox Zero. In fact, I'd be so bold to say that they simply combined the first two game, up-res'd everything, and called it a day. I..probably wouldn't complain about that, but yeah. I know we have some new walker stuff, but a lot of the other stuff looked darned familiar.....on my extremely limited viewing.

BUT PIGMA IS THERE. He's a Pigman, Jerry!

06/22/15, 13:50
@Mr_Mustache

I'm tellin ya, Pigma is alive. Andross has been experimenting with Pigma since the 50's.
06/22/15, 14:00
@Jargon @Mr_Mustache Is there anything in the game that suggests Katt and Fox have a thing?! I just mostly remember her annoying Falco.

@Mr_Mustache There is definitely a lot of brand new content. Pretty much everything I saw in the Treehouse videos was new. I don't think it is reusing anything? Maybe some small parts of the first stage, but even that has a lot of new areas.

@Mr_Mustache

I feel like the walker-Arwing-thing will basically play out similarly to how Fox was able to get out of his Arwing (or Landmaster) and run around on foot in Assault.

Not really thrilled to see that, but hopefully Platinum can show more restraint for the on-the-ground combat than Namco did.

@Zero

She's a female fox, he's a male fox, they're in a videogame; do I need to explain any more?

ALSO, every time she showed up it made like.."lovey" music. And doesn't she say to Fox one time "I could kiss you!"

WELL DUH.

(And when ISN'T Falco annoyed? He's annoyed by EVERYTHING. Remember his famed line when Slippy brings out the Blue Marine? "Slippy, you asshole, nobody cares!"
