Awful Levels/Segments in Otherwise Great Games [roundtable]

Wet-Dry World in Mario 64

I always hated this level, whenever I play this game now this is always one of the last ones I finish. I don't know, I guess it just feels really boring and unpleasant.

The Riverboat in Half-Life 2

True story, I played through the first part of Half-Life 2, loved it, made it to the riverboat, hated every minute of that, and stopped playing the game before I picked up about 8 months later. Very glad I did, but that section I have no desire to ever play again.

Flood Levels in Halo Games

The flood have always been a chore to fight and these missions consistently are the low points of each of the main trilogy titles.

Star Fox Adventures: The very intro of the game. It's not bad itself but whenever I wanna start a new game or play from close to the beginning, I hate having to play the entire part with Crystal

COD:MW: I hate the entire USMC part of the campaign.

Mario 3: Pirahna Plant World. Yep. I've never liked that world. It's mazy, hard, and boring. That (and maybe the Ice World) I found to be an annoying challenge I always wanted to skip.

@Secret_Tunnel That's what the flamethrower is for. You should get the flamethrower ASAP, as it takes down that enemy in literally seconds.

EDIT: The other thread about great games you wish were better reminded me of a segment in Dead Space (which I don't think is great, but at least is generally better than this part) I hated. Specifically, the sequence where you man the two laser cannons outside the ship to blow away oncoming asteroids nearly ruined the whole game for me. I must have spent at least a day being stuck on that part, only to barely make my way through on the millionth try with one unit of health left. That's one of the worst sections I've played in any game.

@carlosrox Plant world is one of my favorite worlds! Ice world not so much.

@Zero
Wow! Really? What's to like? I also remembered another reason I hated that world. The god awful world map music.

@carlosrox

I remember disliking World 7 a lot too in SMB3 but when I went back and beat the game last year, I found that I enjoyed it just as much as the other worlds.

Though World 5, the island/cloud world with the Statue suit is my favorite.

The Plant world was the one world I always skipped when I was playing. Because it was always so tough for me.

I'm going to toss out the entire beginning of Twilight Princess. I would say up to the point after you beat the Forest Temple. It's the biggest reason why I've never gone back and made a second file to beat again, which I've done with every Zelda game ever (AoL is an exception, since I didn't like it at all). It just drags on, is so dull, and nothing you spend hours on actually matters in the end.

Where do I find that? I don't think I can buy it from the Panda yet.

The Water Temple in OOT was freaking awesome. You guys just suck at video games and life.

I Second that! The best part of the game IMO (Not kidding).

@Secret_Tunnel You don't buy it, but you'll have to do a few sidequests to get it. You have to find all seven bones that are strewn about Greenvale and take them to Brian (but before doing so, I recommend letting Kaysen's dog steal them from you while you have all seven on your person, and when you go to retrieve them from Kaysen's doghouse, you'll get an Infinite Magnum to go along with them). Then Brian will give you a key to the gate in front of his house (off to the side, not the main gate), where after doing a little exploration, you come across the flamethrower. It's absolutely essential to get.

Temple of the Ocean King in Phantom Hourglass.

Ultimately caused me to stop playing the game. I realized I just wasn't enjoying it.

Final Fantasy X: Blitzball.

You're insane. Best mini-game of any RPG EVER.

I didn't even like Final Fantasy X, but blitzball stood out as one of my least favorite parts of the game.

@X-pert74

Lol, I was just gonna ask you what to do with the bones. I'll get cracking on that.

There are no bad levels in HL2 - sorry, I don't get the hate for Water Hazard or Anti-Citizen One. Never had a problem with the squad AI, but I also left them mostly to their own devices. I adore pretty much every second of HL2, mostly because every time I thought I had the game figured, it threw something new at me. "Our Benefactors" is still a brilliant game climax, probably the best in the genre with the exception of HL2:Episode 2.

I also liked hunting the Tears in Twilight Princess, mostly because I like how the gameplay changed in wolf form. I really dug the different ways of getting around and fighting enemies and whatnot.

I agree about some of the Halo mentions - mostly The Library. There are so many fun levels in the campaign, but that one is an exercise in tedium, boredom, and monotony. The awesome enemy AI is almost nowhere to be found, there's next to no strategy other than "KEEP SHOOTING" and it's the easiest thing in the world to literally get lost. Horrible level.

What else?

Blades of Hades in God of War SUCKED. Even David Jaffe admitted that.

"No Fighting in the War Room" in CoD4 was a shitty piece of respawning corridor-shooting that is exactly what I DON'T want to play in a Call of Duty game.

Agreed on the Space/Underwater segments in KOTOR - hated those.

And while they're not BAD, I never enjoy the Water Temple or Jabu Jabu's Belly in Ocarina of Time.

Neotokyo in Timesplitters 2
You have to follow this girl through the city, and some sewers, and into her base. But not too close or she'll catch you and you'll fail the mission. But not too far away or the door closes behind her and you fail again. And there's cameras everywhere that will insta-fail the mission too. Grr!

The dacha level in Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear
Another insta-fail stealth mission with more patrolling guards and more hiding in closets for 5 minutes at a time trying to figure out their pattern which changes every time you restart the level.

The underground city in Eternal Darkness
First you go to the teleporter array, then you teleport to the first tower, then you fight your way back to the teleporter, then go to another tower, then back to the teleporter, then to a tower. You do this a good 9 times, which you think would be plenty. But no, two chapters later you get to do it all over again with a different character!

HL2 was lay too linear. It was also ridiculously short compared to the original. I actually found even more parts of HL2 annoying...in fact I'd say most chapters are somewhat tedious. Like, I love HL2 like it's no one's business but as I've said before...the step down from the PERFECT original is almost unforgivable even in itself.

Good one! You could tell they kind of ran out of ideas in some areas...but whatever, the game was still awesome

^ Got yes, I forgot that. I love me some ED, but that particular section makes me want to break things.

Never minded the linearity myself, especially since HL2 didn't force me through so many annoyingly slipperly first-person platforming sections. Perfection that was not. Never felt too short to me either - any longer and I think I would have found parts of it starting to drag. As it is, the pacing is brilliant, and something that FPS games still haven't touched even 6 years later.

I made the mistake with my first character to go to this zone and I was even dumb enough to sit through the majority of the quests in it. I never went back. In fact, no-one I know ever went in there. Blizzard even went out of their way to say how much the zone sucked.

Luckily, the zone is awesome now.
