Mario VS. Sonic. The debate has gotten the blood of many a fanboy boiling for more than two decades. Well I'm here to end the debate once and for all! It's Sonic!

Everything Mario and everything Sonic is fair game in this top ten, so let's dive right in! In no particular order, here are the reasons that Sonic rules and Mario drools.

So there you have it. Sonic is the best, and Mario is, well...lame. I think I've made my points perfectly clear in a non-biased, non-fanboy way.

The easiest way to fix Nintendo online is to throw your Switch into the garbage. Buy yourself a Sony Playstation by Microsoft. It’s pretty much the same console and you can play “Cool Man with Hoop Head for the Nintendo Switch" virtually lag-free (Edit: there is some lag).

Oh my gosh, that thing is hilarious. I want one in my living room! It's also proof positive that we use the word "toxic" way too much as an easy synonym for saying something is "bad."

EDIT: I'm in tears from that very first tweet, actually picturing people coming up after a Smash tourney and doing that stuff, and his relatively mild way he says that he's tired of people doing indescribable things to him!

@Secret_Tunnel Haha yeah, as someone fairly familiar with the popular Smash personalities and daily-ish visitor to the Smash subreddit, I love Deep Leffen Bot.

Speaking of Smash ESPORTS, there's been a bunch of online tournaments lately, and last weekend an 8000+ entrant tournament was apparently the largest eSports tournament of all time (or so Hungrybox claimed). I should get around to entering one, even though I really haven't played Ultimate that much since mid 2019 or so. Other NW people should try too! So far I think they've all been free to enter. Though I imagine it does sorta take up at least a good portion of your weekend.

I mean... it’s probably not a real bot, though. This is a thing now, to claim you wrote a bot and then just do a parody.

Maybe I should make my own Negative World bot.

@kriswright From what I've seen, it's a real bot that creates the content, but the guy who runs the Twitter only posts the "tweets" that are worthwhile, and presumably throws out a lot of what the bot comes up with that either isn't entertaining or doesn't make any sense.

Yoshi was the coolest thing ever in the SNES days. Mario World and Yoshi's Island Yoshi are fantastic. Then Yoshi's Story came along and ruined him irreparably. Now he's basically a dopey Pokemon. That's interesting; I think there's definitely a difference in how Nintendo designs their games nowadays versus back then, but I think both have their merits. For instance, feeling more powerful with Yoshi and being able to take him around to "break" other levels actually adds quite a bit of replayability and player agency IMO. But I can see why one would prefer a tighter experience.

The newer Yoshi can do that and stop. Yoshi has more personality in the newer games. I mean, I'm not a fan of Shadow the Hedgehog either, but there's a minor case for him.

-He's a dynamic character in Sonic Adventure 2. He goes from a villain to an anti-hero. You actually see him experience the death and loss of a close personal friend and leads to a heroic sacrifice. So he's not all bad.
-He's a foil character, so he's there to contrast and highlight the heroic decisions made by Sonic. (That's a classic trope, though not honestly a favorite of mine. Nintendo does this all the time though, so we can't knock it categorically)
-The version of him in the Sonic Boom cartoon is an hilarious send up of anti-hero characters. Shadow is worth existing for those couple of episodes alone.

But an end to hate in smash and hatred towards newbs isn't the end of it. Noobs can be just as hateful as pros as well. Make a note to yourself not to be a jerk after every victory (unless of course you're TSM, try not to be like Froggen, although that guy's like a pro). Also when you know you've been playing for a bit, begin to look out for more competitive games. Try to play only in 2v2s, and make sure you try to practice against non-ranked people and don't just force yourself into a ranked team at launch.
