I know we've had discussion on the Wii U but right now I'm getting more into Shovel Knight as a series than ever and it's all thanks to the portability and large screen of the Nintendo Switch. I went and beat the original Shovel Knight already once more. It was a blast but I only ever dabbled in the first level of Plague of Shadows.

Man Plague of Shadows is so good. Who here has been playing that or even the Spectre Knight campaign? I haven't tried that yet. Plague of Shadows has you playing as the Plague Knight and there's so much uniqueness to his character. The controls are way different and take some getting used to. Having said that I'm finding myself enjoying Plague of Shadows MORE than Shovel of Hope or whatever the original campaign was renamed.

The very deep weapon system is also a delight as are the nods to the fact that you're playing as a 'bad guy' despite your intentions are good for your own perspective.

What a treat.

Played a bit of King of Cards today. Wow. King Knight is really scratching that itch for a Wario Land game! It’s awesome so far.

I think I basically did everything you can do in the story! Aside from collecting all the Joustus cards, which seems like a grind. I got every medal thingy, beat every Joustus opponent (and only cheated against like a quarter of them!) and beat the extra final boss unlocked by doing so.

I also started playing through the Challenges and completed the first five, which are the only ones that aren't either Joustus rematches (with mirrored decks, apparently) or boss fight rematches (with no subweapons and less health). Hopefully I can cruise through those this weekend and put King of Cards to bed for good, and probably move right into Showdown.

And that's King Knight for me! Still think this is probably the best of the four, but they're all so close in quality that I think everyone's going to come away with their own very different rankings. For me, it's King > Shovel > Plague > Specter

Showdown's quite fun! It's like a very pared-down Smash, with more emphasis on platforming. Most characters seem to only have 3-4 attacks, and the only defensive option is a parry that causes a shockwave to push all nearby opponents and projectiles away. Makes it easy to pick up each character, look at their moves in the pause list, and feel like you've got a handle on them in minutes. There's not really combos or anything, as each time you get hit you get invulnerability for a few seconds (which goes away if you attack).

Definitely seems like a fun fighter-platformer to get a couch party going (no online play), and each character's Story mode offers enough variety in game modes and stages and opponents that I feel like I'm getting a decent look at how the game would play in multiplayer. It also ends in a pretty nice final boss fight.

Only problem is that my GamePad lasts, like, less than an hour now on a full charge.

Yeah, same! What's up with that?

Okay, but how is it that my OG 3DS from 2011 still has a perfectly working battery but these guys' Gamepads (circa 2012, I would guess) have batteries that are dying out?

To be fair, my Gamepad seems to have a fine working battery, but I have without a doubt used it far fewer times than those guys likely have. How cheaply made was the Wii U after all?

It comes down to luck in a lot of ways. I've gone through 2 new 3DS XL batteries and 2 OG 3DS batteries. My gamepad battery seems to be just as shitty as it always was though but I've also had to replace my Cell Phone Battery twice now.

@pokepal148

That's some bad luck!

I've only had to replace a battery on an old MacBook several years ago. It started expanding and busting out of the bottom of the computer. It still worked, but it obviously wasn't safe to use much longer, haha.

Honestly, I've had hardware issues with every system and handheld since the DS and Wii:

DS: Dead pixels
Wii: Faulty disc drive, later full system memory wipe
3DS: A-button sticking/not registering
Wii U: Faulty disc drive, dying GamePad battery
Switch: Drifting and de-syncing Joy-Cons

Based on my experience, Nintendo doesn't quite make 'em like they used to...

Got another Direct-style presentation from Yacht Club Games coming Wednesday. More info on Shovel Knight Dig and Cyber Shadow? What's interesting is that Yacht Club is only publishing both of those games, they're not the developer. So maybe the teased "new surprises" will include a look at what they're developing in-house?

@nate38

Interesting...

Cyber-Shadow still looks good. Has Amiibo support. Launches this fall.

Shovel Knight Dig will not release in 2020, on track for 2021.

Two new games in development internally at Yacht Club.

New game announced: Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon -- roguelite puzzle game hybrid. "Everything we love about falling block puzzle games with a dungeon crawling twist." Developer listed as "Vine / Yacht Club Games" so I'm guessing this doesn't count as one of their two internally developed games mentioned above.

Looks neat!

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon looks really cool! That was a great trailer. I am rather intrigued. Is it confirmed for Switch?

@DrFinkelstein Release date, platforms, and price all TBD on the website. Hard to imagine it wouldn't make it to Switch, though.
