Negative World's Top Games of the Decade [roundtable]

Saw this exact thread happening over on another forum, and figured I wanted to get the opinions of the Negative World members. What are some of your favorite games (or least favorite?) of the past decade? I tried to list mine as a "Top 10" but you don't have to if you don't want to.

9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors
SUPER Street Fighter IV
Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
Kid Icarus Uprising
Resident Evil Revelations
Pokémon Moon
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Shovel Knight
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon/Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
(yeah, these are technically two different games, but I'm grouping them together for no particular reason. )

BONUS SHOUT OUT: Monster Hunter 4 ULTIMATE I haven't really ever cared for a game in this series, but for whatever reason, this one finally got me. Maybe it was playing online with several of you, maybe it was the presentation (that opening battle was pretty sweet) or maybe it was the interaction with others via Miiverse (RIP)...but this was the one Monster Hunter that I really got into.

I have enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories, but I haven't gotten very far yet.

@Anand

But the sequel made everything better! So it should be ranked higher, no?

Seriously though, the amount of depth the arts and styles system adds to Monster Hunter is absolutely absurd

@pokepal148

Monster Hunter 4 ULTIMATE is pretty freakin’ good. No denying that.

But have you played Monster Hunter Stories though?

@GameDadGrant
I dunno. I put a lot of value on novelty. I have way more affection for Metroid than Super Metroid. Also, the 3D was neat, but this is one franchise that I'd rather play on a tv.

@Anand

That’s like, the opposite of how this franchise got popular, haha. It never really took off until Capcom put it on PSP. Although now Monster Hunter World exists, so I guess it finally broke the glass ceiling and got a hit on home consoles!

Just curious, what makes this a “TV game” for you? I find it far more accessible and easier to play in bite-sized gaming sessions (perfect for handheld play) than to sit down in front of some oversized screen. It’s harder (impossible?) to play local co-op on a TV, too. Handheld just seems...um, hands down the better option?

@GameDadGrant
I know, I know. But not in America!

What makes it a TV game? Scale and controls, mostly. Big dinosaurs belong on a big screen. And I don't have 3DS-shaped mitts like you, so a Pro-type controller is much more comfortable for me over long sessions.

All that said, I haven't dug too much into World at all. Is it the simplification? Fanboyism? I dunno. But I haven't touched Ultimate GX, either.

Local multi is definitely a cool feature on portable. Except I've never come across anyone who wanted to play locally!

Again, I just have fonder memories of my time with Tri and ... 3 Deluxe? I got SO into Tri that 4 couldn't have the same impact.

@Anand

Come to Detroit. We’ll hunt some monsters together. Maybe get Stephen and Paul to tag along! Andrew should come, too!

One day! We can have a murder capital competition.

(I actually used to live in Jackson, Michigan, y'know.)

@Anand

Near the prison?
11/20/19, 14:24
@GameDadGrant
I actually grew up IN the prison. Like Bane!
11/20/19, 15:17
I was actually in Detroit uh... over the summer. But I was just passing through so I didn't bother anyone!

@Anand

Actually, that checks out.

@Zero

Maybe next time...!

As always, it's been fun reading everybody else's lists. Secret Tunnel posted a link to that Half an A Press video, the mad lad. Sometimes it feels like we're on that same weird internet wavelength. I was just thinking about how you're the only other person I've met who knows what the fuck Yo Noid 2 is. Anyway, here's the only list that matters.

10. AM2R
9. Super Mario Odyssey
8. Pikmin 3
7. A Hat in Time
6. Undertale
5. The Banner Saga Trilogy
4. Nier Automata
3. Bloodborne
2. Devil May Cry 5
1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

If you ask me on a different day, you'll probably get a different order. The top 3 shift around a lot and 6-20 tend to shuffle around. Honorable mentions include Dark Souls, Kirby Robobot, Fallout New Vegas, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, A Link Between Worlds, Kid Icarus Uprising, Halo Reach, Overwatch, Dark Souls 3. I was tempted to do a top 30 like Chris, but didn't want to take the time.

Ha! Oh man, I've been out of the Crazy Obscure itch.io Games game for a while now, has there been anything good lately? I still remember getting endless entertainment out of Indie Statik's list of the Top 100 Best Free Indie Games of 2013, but that site isn't even up anymore.
11/22/19, 02:17
Gah! I forgot Sword & Sworcery!
11/22/19, 20:16
It's been a great decade, for sure. 10 isn't enough, looking at what games wouldn't make the cut, so I'll do 20.

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. Bloodborne
3. The Witness
4. Portal 2
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
6. The Last of Us
7. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
9. Hitman (2016)
10. Dark Souls
11. Outer Wilds
12. Resident Evil 2 (2019)
13. Super Mario 3D World
14. Alien: Isolation
15. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
16. Red Dead Redemption
17. Donkey Kong Country Returns
18. Astro Bot Rescue Mission
19. Deadly Premonition
20. Life is Strange

1-through-7 is pretty much set in stone, but I'm not sure about the rest of the ranking (especially 8-through-12, I feel like I could arrange those in any order and agree with it).

And bonus Top 10 Nintendo games:

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
4. Super Mario 3D World
5. Donkey Kong Country Returns
6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
7. Bayonetta 2
8. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
9. Metroid: Samus Returns
10. Luigi's Mansion 3
Honorable Mentions: Splatoon 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Yoshi's Woolly World, Pikmin 3

BTW I put together a list of NW's highest rated Nintendo games of the generation.

Rules: At least 20 ratings, No ports / remakes

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 9.79 (35)
2. Super Mario Odyssey - 9.6 (25)
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 9.57 (112)
4. Xenoblade Chronicles - 9.46 (38)
5. Super Mario 3D World - 9.45 (45)
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - 9.41 (42)
7. Fire Emblem: Awakening - 9.31 (35)
8. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - 9.29 (26)
9. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 9.24 (33)
10. Pikmin 3 - 9.2 (30)

If you're wondering where Smash Ultimate is, so was I and... it only has 11 ratings? Man the site is dead lately. Also Mop gave it a 5 or something which pulled it down a lot so it ranks lower than the top 10 anyway.
