@carlosrox What are you talking about? Joker is in a 3DS game. He's also the (current) face of the SMT franchise, which is one of the biggest and most beloved JRPG franchises that started back on the Super Nintendo, and the Switch is getting SMT V exclusive.

I don't think Snake ever had a negative connection with Nintendo. Snake has been in quite a few games on Nintendo platforms over the decades, including three exclusives... Snake's Revenge on NES, Metal Gear Solid on GBC, and Twin Snakes on GameCube. Other than that, there's the original on NES and Snake Eater on 3DS. I don't think Kojima would have been opposed to putting Metal Gear Solid on N64 if it was possible back then, and it's not like they were ever antagonistic about the exclusivity like Squaresoft was with those FFVII ads about how many cartridges it would take. I'm happy Snake and Cloud are in Smash. The more gaming icons, the merrier.

What I meant was Snake and Cloud helped Sony hit it big with Playstation. Their legacy when it comes to Nintendo relates more with losing them to Sony.

Sonic singlehandedly destroyed Nintendo's monopoly in the 90's. All's well that ends well!

@carlosrox I seriously doubt that is why they were chosen for Smash though. They were chosen because they're two of the biggest name characters in video games.

I mean, if it was all about Nintendo connection, it wouldn't have been Cloud. It would have been Terra or Edgar or someone else from VI. But none of those characters are as famous as Cloud.

The other thing that seems clear to me is that Nintendo is trying to involve as many of the big name Japanese developers as possible. At this point we pretty much have almost all of them. Square, Enix, Capcom, Sega, Konami, Namco, SNK, Atlus, etc. they're spreading these choices out between a lot of developers. So they had probably decided to do an Atlus character before choosing the specific one.

I don't see the third party choices being as much about "Nintendo" as it is about like... the history of Japanese video gaming or something. Trying to give representation to all of the big players. Which is pretty cool, in my eyes.

@Zero

But what if game companies being more jovial towards each other lately is a symptom of corporations realizing that they can Pareto-improve their marketing strategies by agreeing not to dunk on each other all the time and instead use that energy to get us to buy all three consoles rather than fanboying over one!? What if Disney buys Nintendo!?

...I really am enjoying entertainment culture's late-capitalistic crossovers though, everybody really is on the same side and we all want to celebrate video games together, no need to exclude any fighters for tribal reasons. Every season of The Simpsons is on Disney+? Heck yeah! What could possibly go wrong!?

Those of us who want more weird third-party fighters like Master Chief and those of us who want more classic Nintendo fighters like Waluigi need to come together to unite against those of them who want Goku. He's not even a video game character!
11/28/19, 21:31
Yeah, I'm totally down for some rival console manufacturer characters like Master Chief. Would have been an impossible joke request ten years ago but how neat is it that it can actually happen now? I really hope we get a few more big name Western characters before this all wraps up too. Western games are an important part of the history of the industry too. Banjo-Kazooie opened up the possibility of both these things happening. The only rule now is videogame characters only and no Goku ever.

@Zero

Terra and Edgar don't have nearly the same recognition as Black Mage.

Or a Moogle, I guess. Which, honestly? THAT should have been the Final Fantasy rep in Smash. And this is coming from someone who uses Cloud as a second or third main.

I hate to break it to you guys, but Goku is already in the game.

Oh man, that old wound still hurts. What you're describing is the real Smash "Ultimate" for me...

But I'd be cool with this. Moogle (or Mog) makes the most sense to me as a FF rep because it's something that actually represents more than a single Final Fantasy game.

I don't know what a Moogle is.

CTM!

You've seen the cover of FF3 I assume so of course you do!
11/29/19, 09:43
@carlosrox
I kind of know what it looks like.

Agreed! Or heck, what about a Chocobo? Aren’t those in EVERY Final Fantasy game? Except Crystal Chronicles, for some reason, despite being a game about a bunch of explorers traveling across the land in a carriage..somehow NOT being pulled by the iconic yellow birds.

@Anand

Moogles are those little white fluffy creatures with a ball on their head and bat wings on their back. They carry around the crystal bucket when you play Crystal Chronicles in single player mode.

Anyways my point was that the FF rep shouldn't have been Coud in the first place. Terra woulda been way better.

I remember reading that Sakurai confirmed that they wanted a more Nintendo relevant FF character and were close to securing it before Cloud became the pick cuz of his stupid popularity.

Cuts me deep.

@carlosrox

Oh man, you and I share that pain. Especially since FF3 is like my second-favorite game of all-time and I have a limited tolerance towards Smash characters with little to no tie to Nintendo.
12/01/19, 21:21
Isn't Final Fantasy IV the most popular of the Nintendo ones? It at least seems that way to me. We'd probably see Cecil or Rydia before anyone else.
12/01/19, 23:06
@Mop it up No way, VI is way more popular!

Final Fantasy VI was released to critical acclaim and is seen as a landmark title for the role-playing genre; for instance, it was ranked as the 2nd best RPG of all time by IGN in 2017. Its SNES and PlayStation versions have sold over 3.48 million copies worldwide to date as a stand-alone game, as well as over 750,000 copies as part of the Japanese Final Fantasy Collection and the North American Final Fantasy Anthology. Final Fantasy VI has won numerous awards and is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time.

Or you can check the only thing that matters, NW rankings!

@Zero Just because one is more critically acclaimed doesn't make it more popular. How do the sales compare to FF IV? That one's been re-released more, as well as having a direct sequel. I also see more discussion about it than I do for 1-3, 5, and 6, but like I said this was just my personal experience. That said, in recent times I do see FF VI get talked about and appreciated more, so it seems it just took longer for it to catch on. Before that though, I mainly ever heard about FF IV. But that's also a good thing in some ways, as it allowed me to go into FF VI totally blind even playing it so many years after it came out.
12/02/19, 00:43
I think VI's sales were better, and I've personally seen way more discussion about VI, it's pretty much generally considered one of the best RPGs ever made. Both of them get re-released so much that I don't really know which is re-released more.

I honestly feel like... we're living in parallel worlds or something here? VI has pretty much ALWAYS gotten MASSIVE acclaim everywhere I've been! I don't think this is a new thing at all.

Even if you just look at NW numbers, it's not only a much higher average, but like... about 4 times more people scored VI than IV here. That's a pretty huge gap.

Final Fantasy VI - 9.54 (54)
Final Fantasy IV - 8.76 (14)

I'm not trying to be mean but I just don't think there was ever a time when IV was bigger than VI except for like... before VI existed.
