What are some older games you want to play through and haven't, and why haven't you? [roundtable]

I have a sort of ongoing list of games in my head that I want to play through but for one reason or another never have. I'm sure a lot of you are similar.

Let's share them!

Panzer Dragoon games - Pretty much all of them. But Orta is the one I played a little bit of at my cousin's and kind of fell in love with, but then never played again. A great game in the vein of Star Fox, and with Star Fox basically going downhill fast, would be cool to check them out. Why haven't I played them? Mostly because they aren't on any of the systems I own, but I guess that is changing soon!

Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury - I love the first two Bangai-O games and always wanted to play the third but... it was an Xbox 360 exclusive. Ah well.

Soul Blazer / Illusion of Gaia / Terranigma - I had never even really paid attention to these games until long after the age of the SNES but then I heard they were like... all really awesome? A whole (sort of) trilogy of awesome RPGs on the SNES that I never played? Heck yeah! But... they're super expensive to try to buy, so I guess I'd have to pirate them or something.

Silent Hill 3 - Honestly not sure why I never played this game. Liked the first two, always meant to, and then I just... never got around to it. Not even sure if my PS2 still works but maybe?!

Disaster: Day of Crisis - This always looked like the right kind of total cheese for me but it never came to the US and I never got around to importing it.

Soma Bringer - A MonolithSoft DS RPG? Yes please! But they never brought it outside of Japan!

I could probably go on and on but that's enough for now.

What about YOU?!

I love playing new games and this generation has had a ton of great stuff, between indie games and the bigger budget studio games, and I tend to put a higher priority on playing new games as that gets me more excited, but a lot of older stuff I'd love to play can get neglected. I've gotten into the habit of trying to fit one in whenever I can, though.

My biggest blind spots are pre-N64/32-bit era, Sega console stuff, and RPGs (mostly JRPGs and CRPGs).

I've got kind of a running list of games that I want to play at some point, and it all really comes down to finding the time for them (most of the games are long) and finding the best place to play them. The Switch has actually really helped in this regard, as I can chip away at a game in bits & pieces during lunch breaks and whatnot and not feel like I'm taking time away from something else. And the system has been getting more and more older games ported to it that I've missed out on. This is what got me to finally play through Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma.

Final Fantasy (series): I've only played FFXV, but have been meaning to get into the series as a whole. One of the things that helps me is to recognize that it's unnecessary to play every single game and focus in on what will cover most of the high points. I'm planning on playing the remake of VII, and I've also zeroed in on VI, VIII, IX, X and XII as others that will make sense to play at some point. It's one of those things where I never had any interest in RPGs growing up, particularly turn-based ones, but I'm much more open to trying all sorts of games now.

More SNES stuff: Namely Earthbound, DKC 2&3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Mario RPG. I've got the SNES Classic for a few of those at least. Again, these are just games I missed out on because I didn't really get into games until the early 3D days. Again, it's just a matter of setting aside the time.

Other big RPGs that are highly regarded: Persona 4 & 5, Xenoblade Chronicles and XCX, Morrowind, KOTOR, Dragon Age. Just not enough time in the day for all of these...

I'm also still bummed about Disaster: DoC never getting localized. It looked right up my alley.

Another one I just thought of.

Metal Gear Solid (GBC) - This game has AMAZING scores and I always wonder what exactly it did right. Not sure where to find a copy though and would it even work on my Game Boy Advance? Probably?!

Everyone always says I should play Chrono Trigger, but I never have. Maybe some day. Apart from the story, it just doesn't seem like my kind of game... Anyway, that is probably on my list.

I also never played Paper Mario 64 for some crazy reason and always wanted to. I even bought it on the VC!! So dumb.

@Zero

Metal Gear Solid is fantastic on GBC, and will absolutely play on your GBA!

@J.K. Riki

Chrono Trigger is all kinds of amazing. Lots of ties to the Bible, so that may be a turn on/turn off depending on your views on faith. Almost a ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ vibe in many cases. But that’s why I enjoyed it. YMMV. At least listen to the soundtrack, as it is all kinds of amazing.

And play it on DS.
