Hero used Hocus Pocus, which is a gambler's move--it has a variety of effects ranging from picking any of Hero's other spells at random (including Kamikazee) to benefits like invincibility, Super Mushroom, and restoring all MP to disadvantages like putting him to sleep, flowering/poisoning him, or shrinking him. Critical hits, meanwhile, activate 1/8th of the time for Hero's smash attacks, and multiply their normal power and knockback by 150%. In the video, the Hero got lucky by getting a Super Mushroom effect from Hocus Pocus (which has something like a 3% chance) then did a forward smash while giant and got lucky again by getting a critical hit.

I guess Nickelodeon is airing a Smash Ultimate tournament?

Welp, it looks like a page on the official Nintendo website for Challenger Pack 4 has leaked some info that narrows down the fourth DLC character considerably.

In addition to the standard info about the challenger pack's contents (1 new character, 1 new stage, several new music tracks) the page also has a copyright from the third party, which is...- - - SNK Corporation - - -

So yeah, that narrows down the fourth character to a company. And it's one that I don't think too many people really had their eyes on, as far as Smash candidates go. Could this mean we'll see Link and Sonic and Hero going up against...Terry Bogard??????

I'm not personally a fan of that company, but it's cool to give them some representation considering their importance in the past. I wouldn't have gotten excited for a reveal trailer of one of their characters anyway, so I guess my lack of control didn't spoil anything.

So one more character then. Makes sense to save the biggest and most important for last. Doom Slayer, of course.

@nate38

I know relatively little about that company, but they've been around for a while and I wouldn't be opposed to an inclusion. That said, I actually love the Metal Slug series, so if it ends up being one of them (or all of 'em, Hero-style!), I'll go nuts! Two other candidates that I think are likely are Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui).

I have never played a game by that company. But I guess it makes sense? Paying respects.

Waluigi or Master Chief for the final character, here we go. Both of their companies already have representation, but who would be more exciting?

It actually makes a lot of sense.

SNK is the one major Japanese 3rd party that hasn't seen any representation in Smash Ultimate.

I just want my Monster Hunter representative though.

Very good chance we get Banjo within the next two weeks.

So that'd be a nice surprise, less than two months after Hero.

@nate38

Wow! That'd be really early, they said he wouldn't come until Fall.

I guess that frees up October to reveal the fourth one, and then do the last one in January during their huge beginning-of-year Direct?

Actually, are we getting a Direct in November!? You'd think they'd wanna show off more about Animal Crossing before January, and they don't have anything else coming out in November or December other than Pokemon...

I'm still baffled by their big Halloween game coming out at the END of October.

Some random person on the Internet that other people seem to trust (they were behind some leak?!) is saying Terry Bogard is the 4th DLC character.

LINK

I have no real connection to this particular character so it's tough to be too excited, but hey, it's all icing on the cake at this point.

Banjo is here, you nerds! And Terry Bogard is coming! Thoughts and impressions?
09/05/19, 16:55
Banjo didn't immediately click as interesting to me the way Pirahna Plant, Joker and Hero did, but I'll give it more time. I could be missing a lot but it seems the most unique thing about him is that super powerful dash move that you can only do 5 times per stock? (Is there any way to refill that or is it a set limit?!)

I have no real opinion on Terry Bogard at all. Seems like a kind of boring choice to throw in another fighter, but whatever. He could end up alright.

Not sure why it finally clicked in my head that Smash is getting character rep from basically every major Japanese developer. Sega, Capcom, Konami, Namco, Square, Enix, Atlus, and now SNK. Who is next? Any major Japanese developers they haven't done yet?

I'd like to see Level 5. PROFESSOR LAYTON would be the obvious choice there.

@Zero

I kind of like that he's "less interesting!" I mean, yeah, it makes him less exciting to try out, but if fits; he's a Nintendo 64 character, so he should be just as simple as the original cast.

Sans though!! How crazy is that?

That whole Smash segment was wonderful. It's hilarious to me how genuine they let Sakurai be with his humor, making jokes about how you should play Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox One and how he's "very pleased" with the sales of Smash Ultimate. I mean, he practically came out and said, "I swear to God, this is my last Smash game, and we all know Nintendo won't be able to get all these licenses again or make a better one without me, so I guess we have to make this one as good as possible."
09/05/19, 20:35
@Zero

I may be the only one on this website that is genuinely excited for Terry. I really like the Fatal Fury/The King of Fighters games...been playing those on Nintendo systems since the SNES/Game Boy era. Just as iconic and important as Ryu and Ken, IMO. Though I would not have been sad at all if the SNK rep was the Metal Slug (the tank, not any of the soldiers...unless they all came in, guns blazing as part of a Final Smash, Mega Man-style). But Terry Bogard in ULTIMATE is awesome. "Hey! C'mon, c'mon! Get sir-e-ous!"

Also, one of the major Japanese third parties I'm surprised we haven't seen a rep from yet is Tecmo. I mean, I guess there is that Assist Trophy of the girl from Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, but we don't have a playable Tecmo rep yet. The obvious choice would be Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, but I wonder if they would be so bold as to put in Kasumi from Dead or Alive? Or maybe one of the warriors from Dynasty/Samurai Warriors?
09/05/19, 20:49
I forgot about Tecmo. They are a pretty huge Japanese company with no playable fighters!

What if they did one of the (generic) football players from Tecmo Bowl? HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

I'd be really surprised if we didn't get Hayabusa now that they've announced more fighters are coming. Classic character I've been expecting for awhile.

I really hope we get some more Western characters in the next pack too. You all know I lust for Doom Slayer by now, but I think characters like Crash Bandicoot, Lara Croft, and Scorpion/Sub-Zero are more than worthy as well. Maybe even a Blizzard or Valve character (Gordon Freeman would break the internet). Master Chief if Microsoft wants to keep playing, or the friggin' Battletoads. These are some iconic characters that helped shape the industry as much as games developed in Japan.
09/06/19, 00:57
Odds are low at this point that we're getting un-repped Nintendo series, right...? I still would love to see Advance Wars and Rhythm Heaven.

As far as third-parties, I'd be excited about Phoenix Wright and Leon Kennedy. Terra from FF3/6 would be my pipe dream wish character.

@Zero

Haha!
09/06/19, 01:34
@TriforceBun

I really don't think there's any rules or patterns at this point. Sakurai does whatever he wants. He worships chaos. No video game character is out of the question.
09/06/19, 01:40
Is Banjo Ridley?

I love Banjo. Everything about him is perfect and he's very fun to play as/against.
