Super Mario Maker 2 Discussion (Nintendo Switch) [game]

Super Mario Maker 2 on the Switch
9.12/10 from 11 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker 2 on the Switch!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
Super Mario Maker 2 is finally here! I remember back when it was a mere hopeful game. Then it evolved into a rumor. Finally into fruition! It hasn't even really been that long since we've known of it. The day has come where the Negative World community gets the ball rolling on excellent levels. Many of our users have been known to make some incredible levels. Many even found notoriety in the course database online. I hope we'll see the same this time around. Perhaps with a bigger install base, the Switch will see even MORE levels from the humans of Earth, and hopefully more levels from Negative World.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the original game, I generated a simple but easy to use form which allowed us to specifically track all of our levels in one place. The game's system of level finding is actually even better than it was before, but I know many people who found this list of Negative World specific levels useful. So I really hope you all will consider using it again.

Please use this official form here to fill out your information.

Then simply go to, or save, this Negative World (and Twitter) Stage Collection List for perusal as you see fit.

Be sure to talk about those stages in this thread too! Give the creators your feedback and praise!

I found the hidden 1up in your first stage ;)

I think it was near the end? Invisible block. Maybe you hid more, but at least I found that one!

@TriforceBun
Yeah, definitely a good idea. I actually have something like that in that stage at the beginning but it's for something else.

------

How come noone is saving replays of playing eachother's stages? I've saved some and shared some already (on the Discord), it would be nice to see others do the same! It would be great to see how some of you dealt with some of the things I put in there.

Save and share replays people!

Got the game the day it was released. I like the game so much, I made a wiki about it: https://super-mario-maker-2-wiki.fandom.com

@AK World

Welcome AK World! Plan on sticking around to game with us?

It's a great game isn't it? Have you tried any of our levels? (See the OP for the list.)

Check it folks! I'm pretty proud of this one!

I'd say this one can be a be a bit more challenging/potentially frustrating due to the wind being a constant factor but as long as you're mindful of it, you should be okay! In fact I've seen people say this one is easy because I ended up being pretty generous with the powerups. I'm really happy with how one of the gimmicks turned out in this stage.

Check it out!

Started up on a Mario 3 Bowser Castle and I just cannot resist the allure of the P Blocks :D

I tried a few more of the NW peeps stages and have definitely enjoyed most of them. Good stuff, but I'm not really surprised by that :)

@carlosrox

That was a really fun level Carlos! Had to go back in for a second play through and nab a top time! Surely I'll be beaten soon. Very cool ideas involving the 'wall' restriction. Great work.

I try not to support CORPORATE AMERICA but it is kind of hilarious to me that Arby's has an official Mario Maker level so... try it out I guess?

I tried it last night. It's pretty good. Funny actually. The comments on it show the stain that exists in the SMM2 community. Lots of hateful people there last night.

Just added my first course: Race to the End of the Race! The code is QTX-P41-SJF

I’m caught up on everyone’s levels. Good stuff all around!

It’d be cool if more of you tried mine.

@ploot
I play all your levels! I love them!

I haven't played every level though, some people have like 600 levels.

My Time Travel course is finished! I'm curious if the narrative comes across clearly enough or not. I added it to the master list.

Hello.

I did a thing.

Goodbye.

@TriforceBun

I played through it last night...I kind of understood what was going on, and I did finish it.

@ploot

I played and finished all of your levels.

@ludist210

Well, here's the story I was trying to convey: Mario saves a happy town's dark fate by defeating a monster before it gets too big and powerful.

In detail, Mario goes through a peaceful town full of Twisters (I picked these because they're only living creature in the game that can't hurt you) then travels through a lab at the town's edge. Inside the lab is a caged monster (Bowser Jr) that Mario walks past, and on the second floor is a time machine. The time machine takes him to a bleak future for the town, where everything has been destroyed and most of the Twisters are now ghosts (Boos). At the edge of the town is the reason for the destruction, a giant monster (Bowser) is terrorizing the place and has captured some of the Twisters.

With the help of the imprisoned Twisters, Mario grabs the key and goes back to the past to try to save the town from a dystopian fate. Using this key, you then defeat the caged monster before it can grow massive and destroy the town, thus changing the future and saving the fate of the Twisters!

The trickiest part of it for me is the very ending, where you can't go through the time machine again to see the results of your actions (since going in the pipe always leads to the sub-area, which is the spooky Ghost House theme in my stage). So you just kinda go through a door to an end screen full of cheering Twisters. But I dunno how much of that is evident through the level itself or how I could've made that narrative a bit clearer.

Did they change the algorithm or something? I just played like twenty levels in endless and each was worse than the last. Do not want.

Edit: Disregard. I was accidentally playing on Expert. Oof. At least if my levels appear in this mode, the competition is whack.

@r_hjort

Good to see you r_hjort! I was in Sweden last month and was going to see if you wanted to say hello. But I didn't know how to contact you outside of here and you weren't recently active.

Where abouts do you live in Sweden? Anywhere near Landskrona?

@TriforceBun

I get it. I didn't know if I skipped anything by going in the Lab first during the first part of the stage, hence why I finished it, but wasn't sure if I missed something.

@ploot

Played and beaten. Strong levels so far!

This is gonna be one of those things that I think will draw blank stares from everyone, but is anyone else kinda disappointed with NOA's localization of the past few years? SMM2 is a good example of their change in style that I don't really like. It feels weirdly trendy and a bit uncharacteristic. For example, trying to expand the castle if you don't have enough coins has Toadette mutter (in small text) "...Seriously!?" A level description had something along the lines of "IT'S. A. DISASTER." And I kinda hate how the half-Heart/half-Boo is called "Meh..."

I dunno. Feels weirdly detached and modern. I know this is extremely nitpicky but it takes away some of the charm of the world for me. Who thought it'd be in-character for Toadette to sound sarcastically incredulous?

@TriforceBun
No different to me than Nintendo naming secret levels Tubular back in the 90s. I understand where you're coming from and since it pops up in dialogue mostly that can be a deterrent on more than just my Super Mario World reference.

It's just an inevitable changing of our beloved hobby.
