Yooka-Laylee is the new, upcoming, platform collect-a-thon style game from Playtonic Games. This developer is made up mostly of some of the greatest people to ever work for Rare back in it's hay-day. The game clearly takes inspiration from Banjo-Kazooie from the colorful visuals, the dual-buddy gameplay, and the music from Grant Kirkhope. The great David Wise also joins! Join this Chameleon and Bat duo on an epic adventure! Coming to pretty much all popular platforms next year. Projected release date is October 2016.

The original Kickstarter earned £2,090,104 with 73,206 backers! This was the USD equivalent of $3,270,281.22. It was the fastest video game kickstarter ever in the U.K. to reach it's significant goal. Early screenshots are below and much more information can be found at the Kickstarter main page!

Holy crap I feel soooo bad for not giving this game love before!

I played for 38 mins when I got it upon release for the Switch and felt rather underwhelmed. Dropped it like a hot potato and never came back.

Been meaning to give it another try for a while and then the announcement of the new game and Banjo in Smash (along with watching a bit of longplay footage of BK64) totally put me in the mood to try it out again.

Has this game been updated since release? I'm playing on handheld mode and it looks and runs really well, I'm seriously impressed.

I'm really enjoying this now and it totally scratches that N64 itch for me, this is great.

Hyped for the 2D sequel but now that I'm really enjoying this I wouldn't mind another 3D game too.

I don't remember it looking and running so well when I played it docked the first time.

Loving this game!

I can't speak for how the game was when it first released on the other platforms, but I enjoyed the game very much by the time I got my backer copy on Switch. Of course it's flawed, but it's basically everything they promised it would be... a solid 3D platformer that pays homage to the N64 classics. It doesn't deserve the hate some give it.

The end boss, however, sucks ass. I decided not to torture myself and just watched the end on YouTube.

I endured that damn boss. It was like past 1am when I finally beat him. Probably took me at least an hour to do it all right. Such a bummer how they handled it. Oi. I'm in a more sour camp on this game but I did 100% it without a guide. I wanted to give it that respect.

@DrFinkelstein

Did you at least feel a sense of satisfaction after beating the boss or only animosity towards whoever designed it?

But yeah, I think Playtonic has potential. I'll probably try their 2D game and really look forward to seeing another 3D platformer which hopefully does everything better and more polished than their first.

@Hinph

More the latter. I just felt they did a poor job on it. And in general, I feel that he lacked the overall charm of Gruntilda. No real world building or anything. Just, an evil bee and a bad boss fight.

Agreed.

You can grab this on PC for FREE right now if you have Twitch Prime (which you can also have for free via an Amazon Prime membership...which you have to pay for). But hey, if you have Amazon Prime it's kind of a no brainer.

Also, as an aside I do have to admit that I'm disappointed they're going in a different direction for the second game. While I don't doubt that a 2D platformer is hard to make, it does kind of feel like they gave up and have kind of demoted themselves to a less grand vision. I would've preferred to see them try to really execute on the Banjo style game. It's still such an underserved genre. Still, I suppose it makes sense if they don't have an enormous team or resources.

@PogueSquadron

Hopefully it's just a smaller bonus project they are working on between more ambitious 3D platformers... maybe a nice way to get some extra cash flowing in.

They've said that the Impossible Lair isn't the Yooka-Laylee sequel. It's more of a stopgap/spinoff between the original and the true sequel.

Got to the Snow world. I love the vibe of it. Great visuals and music.
