Reviews are out.

It's doing... ok. I might pick it up just for the weirdness and to be in that world again.

To be fair, this series has always been pretty polarizing when it comes to reviews.

I am looking forward to playing it and I hope a real No More Heroes 3 comes one day. Because that's what I really want.

Anyway, I'm sure my library will get this eventually. I'll have to put in a request.

I find the solid reviews encouraging for a weird, low-budget game. I think if you bought into the NMH flavor you'll enjoy it.

I'm picking up the physical release with the included season pass and I intend to have a good time even if it's a bit repetitive and rough around the edges. ^__^

As much as I love Killer7, adore the storytelling of Flower, Sun and Rain and enjoyed NMH1&2, I've been falling out of love with Suda and his shenanigans for while now. I'll probably end up getting this at some point, but I'm not hyped for it. I'd rather see Switch releases of his older games like The Silver Case or Michigan: Report from Hell. Unless he's gonna do the season pass thing with those too.

@r_hjort

Yeah, after Killer is Dead (kinda fun but ultimately a disappointment) I haven't followed him much. I know some people liked that free to play Souls-like game he put out a couple years ago?

He's almost like Tarantino, Killer7 and Pulp Fiction were these groundbreaking masterpieces and since then they've been doing tonally similar stuff that doesn't push the envelope too much (though I love all of Tarantino's movies except for maybe Jackie Brown and Death Proof).

Flower, Sun, and Rain = Reservoir Dogs
Killer7 = Pulp Fiction
No More Heroes 1 & 2 = Kill Bill 1 & 2
Shadows of the Damned = Death Proof
Lollipop Chainsaw = Kill Bill again? Lollipop Chainsaw was actually pretty cool and unique

...maybe this theory doesn't hold up. Suda needs to make a Django Unchained.

Never played Killer is Dead, but after reading up on it and watching some footage it seemed to me like Suda's idea of what Suda fans thinks Suda's games should be like. An action game starring an assassin type character named for a famous rock personality, ultra violence, sexy ladies, surreal imagery and plot.

Or maybe he's just not all that and a bag of chips. I feel like Shinji Mikami's importance to a game like Killer7 is probably downplayed a whole lot in favour of the personality cult surrounding Suda. Sort of how people always forget about Takashi Tezuka when talking about the genius behind Mario or Zelda.

Hmm, for some reason I didn't realize this was a retail game at $40. I might hold off a bit.

@Zero

It comes with all the DLC season pass stuff, which are two new playable characters and their corresponding scenarios. Get it while it’s hot! (or not, your choice)

I’ve played a bit of the game myself and I find it to be rather fun. Pretty sweet visuals, as one might expect.

So no one actually played it?!

I just grabbed it from the libe and played through the first cartridge. Kind of digging it! Suda remains one of the only people that can make me give a shit about story in a game, and Travis Strikes Back definitely has that subversive, meta, player-mocking, America-by-way-of-Japan No More Heroes charm. Which is cool. I hadn't even realized how much I'd missed it! And the series art and musical themes are still hella stylish. I just like the overall vibe.

As for the actual brawler gameplay, it's solid. I kind of wish that it were flashier and snappier for how much of it there is, but it works, and has some interesting layers with the special move chip system. And gameplay was never really the reason to play NMH.

So, yeah, some interesting characters and dialogue, so far. Lots of clever nostalgic touches and callbacks which made me chuckle. It's kind of a game for geezers like me! After each cartridge, you have to play through a monochrome, mostly text-based visual novel. The first chapter was oddly enjoyable!

@Anand

Agreed!

I borrowed it from the library last week and played through the first game. Fun stuff! Surprisingly so, lol. I don't know what I expected, but those expectations were low. But this... was legit fun. It wasn't a "real" NMH level of fun, but it had the old charm and it FELT really good to play. If I had more time on the loan and in life in general I think I'd have played through the whole thing for sure.

I still hope for a No More Heroes 3 one day, but this was an excellent addition to the series from what I played! :)

Absolutely. It's a nice diversion or a stopgap until a real No More Heroes or the next full Suda 51 game arrives - but that's kinda underselling it, because it is very enjoyable if only because it's the pure and honest product of such a unique creator. Unfiltered Suda. (on a tiny budget)

I've put more time into it than Mario Odyssey, according to my game screen (!) Beaten it for the good ending, played the DLC. It really makes me want to catch up on more of his games that I've missed but I'm torn between snapping them up on Steam or waiting to see if they hit the Switch.

@Infinitywave

Seems unlikely they'd hit the Switch, no? Probably gotta go the Steam route if you want to play them.

EDIT: Of course, the day after you get them there that's when they'll announce them for Switch. So...

Exactly, I'm gonna see what this month brings anyway.

Yeah, this game is definitely the product of an auteur. A weird, weird auteur.

How's the DLC?

When this game was revealed, I totally thought that it would be an anthology of indie interpretations of Travis Touchdown. Kind of like those Serious Sam games from a couple of years ago. Or Cadence of Hyrule! But it really is limited to T-shirt representation. So strange. But I kind of want them all!

It was definitely announced in that way! It morphed during development into something simpler. Maybe it would have been too challenging to do that across a whole range of indie games.

The DLC is pretty lite. Badman gets a visual novel of his own, which is cool. There's a final Travis VN chapter that leads up towards NMH3, if I'm remembering that right.

The only substantial addition to the game (except having Shinobu and Badgirl playable) is a pinball-flavored Deathball game (in the usual hack and slash style) that replaces a fake, unfinished one. It wasn't my favorite but it's weird, I find myself enjoying whatever comes along in this game. Maybe it's just a willingness to support a designer who makes unexpected games because he's so true to his own preferences, or maybe I just enjoy weird $#!^.
