So, this game sure is ultimate in terms of character roster and stages, and the new Spirits stuff is really cool and mitigates some of my complaints about the trophies being missing, but don't you guys also miss some of the old modes? Home Run Contest and Break the Targets and stuff like that? All Star Mode?
I miss Break the Targets a lot, but it hasn't been good since Melee so I'd kinda rather just not have it than get what we did in Brawl and especially 3DS/WiiU. Home Run Contest was neat in Melee, but there's just not much to it. All Star, I'm not sure how I feel about it. It feels wrong that it's missing, but I'm not really pining for it either.

@TriforceBun Yeah I agree that the new Classic Mode is a great change, maybe the best one yet. But the little run-and-collect game that precedes the boss kinda sucks, especially since it's the same every time. At least Race to the Finish on 64 had a few enemies blocking your way.

@nate38
Well, there isn't much to Home Run Contest, that's true, but with all the minor changes to the characters and with all the new characters it could still have been fun finding the best strats and doing challenges based on it. Speaking of challenges, I also miss the events or whatever they were called.

I also agree about the collectathon before the boss in Classic Mode. I felt over that after my second time playing it.

I've seen a lot of people empathize about the challenge of creating a Break The Targets mode which works with so many characters, but I had an idea: Why not make them User-Generated? If not the shape of the stage, then at least the target location. Make us do the work for you, Sakurai! We could have 100 specific levels per character!

And, hey, while you're at it, why not bring back Stage Builder?

Also, All-Star has become a bit tiresome to me, due to the sheer size of the roster, but I think that Home Run is a shoo-in for free DLC.

My biggest disappointment thus far is that the overall match speed is still relegated to Special Smash, and that it still lacks the granularity of the Melee slider. Whyyyy? The Custom Match thing was so close to perfect!

I'm happy that handicapping is still in, though, and that it can be applied to individual characters, as well as players. Speed and handicapping were my two multiplayer concerns going in.

EDIT: I was wrong!! You CAN use one of your custom rule sets in Special Smash!! Sakurai bless!! You can't save the Special setup... But still!

Damn, this game has it all, in terms of the multiplayer suite. Squad Strike and Smashdown are amazing, too. Plus, Tournament Mode! So good.

I love the Spirit Board, too. It's great how Nintendo makes most of their games portable-friendly in some way. It's all that handheld experience!

EDIT EDIT: Wait, maybe it DOES remember your Special Smash settings! Just the most recently used... but still!

In some ways I almost feel as if they've deliberately taken a couple of steps back with some feature just to keep the game from actually being 'ultimate', for fear that we might never need another Smash Bros ever again. It's a great game and I love it for the insane amount of characters and stages alone, but at this point I think I actually felt more impressed with Smash for Wii U when that came out.

I feel that people are too harsh on Smash Wii U, but as I was trying (and failing) to knock off more tiles on the ol' Challenge Board last week, I realized that most of the ancillary modes are kind of irritating. Or maybe just the challenges, I dunno.

Anyway, I want the next Smash to be 3D. Power Smash.

@Anand
Some of the challenges were a bit annoying, but I liked them overall. They're not bad in this game either, but I miss the event matches. I suppose you could argue that Spirit Mode has taken over those duties a bit, but I liked having a big ol' list of stuff to chip away at.

Unlocking characters sure is tough this time. Fail on the battle and it's like okay, see you in another ten hours I guess. :(

I got the Belmont though. He's everything I was hoping he would be.
12/08/18, 01:21
@Hinph Apparently something unlocks eventually that lets you replay matches you lost.

@Zero

Oh, good to know. It's a damn bummer to lose to somebody you really wanted to unlock.

Oh man I'm happy I took the day off. This is so much better than working.

As I try to break some of the bad habits I've picked up on in the past couple decades of playing Smash, here's a question: is there any point in walking rather than dashing? I realized that I only ever dash, and that that's locking me out of four moves (and I rarely use A Neutral either)! When I first booted up the game, between it being a few years since I've played Smash, having a new Gamecube controller with a stiff analog stick, and learning a slightly different physics engine, I actually couldn't naturally dash everywhere and the game felt really off to me. Then I got used to the controls, and now I can't not dash!

Should I take some time to re-wire my muscle memory or is walking useless?

@Hinph
@Zero

I'm surprised so few people know this! Doesn't a tutorial appear immediately after you lose your first newcomer battle telling you how to do a rematch? Go to "Games and More" and see if there's a little door in the bottom right.

Just arrived at my doorstep!

@Secret_Tunnel
OR just adjust the Tilt Sensitivity in the controls!
12/08/18, 02:30
@Secret_Tunnel

Oh damn. I'm sure I just skipped through it all "Yeah yeah yeah..." I should stop doing that. Thanks. I'm going to really beef up my roster now!

So is there any other way to play with friends online besides going to friend specific rooms? Because here is exactly what everyone does in that situation.

1. Check it there is anyone with a friend room
2. Of course there isn't
3A. Go play with strangers
OR
3B. Create a friend room
4. If no one shows up to your friend room within a minute or so, get bored of waiting and go play with strangers

Like pretty much the only way anyone will end up playing with friends is if they plan it in advance. Which seems silly when everyone is playing the same game!

Or am I missing something?!
12/08/18, 04:18
Obviously what you're missing is the official Nintendo Switch online app.
12/08/18, 05:12
@Zero

I'm starting to dread that Nintendo kinda dropped the ball with online (again?). It's very difficult to get into any sort of match that isn't 4-player FFA, and once you're in, you can't change your character and stay in the match.
12/08/18, 05:43
I don't think I like the way quick play works. Is there a way to play only the type of match you want? If not, the random online is worse than Sm4sh.
12/08/18, 05:53
@TriforceBun
Yeah. In Smash 4 I tend to play 1-on-1 and I like to go through my roster of characters while fighting with one person. Sometimes you just CLICK with somebody, right? But here, we can't do that. Eep.

Plus, taunts seem to be disabled online. I felt Smash 4 did it right by giving only 3 chances to taunt. I generally use taunts for greetings and silly mistakes.
12/08/18, 06:17
I like the spirits mode, it's like a super expanded version of the event matches with some other elements mixed in too.

Unfortunately, the online stinks and is somehow worse than the previous games' online, which I didn't think possible. Even friend rooms have less option, including no option to have CPUs. I wonder if more options will be added in with updates if they get enough feedback?

You can make a public Arena with your preferred rules and wait for someone to join. I haven't had to wait more than 30 seconds for people to start joining so far. But yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the Quickplay function so far.

I'll echo the above and say that the online suite in Ultimate sounded a lot better on paper. I think the community could adapt to its quirks and most everybody could find their imperfect niche, but it's frustrating that these features have been kinda botched compared to how well most other games are doing them. Maybe the expected functionality can be patched in later, who knows.
