So I was looking at review scores recently and saw this game Slime-san that is one of the best reviewed Switch games (85% on MC) despite me having never heard of it. I guess it released a month ago or so to little fanfare, but reviewers really liked it?

Anyway, last night I wanted something new to play on my Switch so I jumped in. It's pretty interesting. It definitely has a low budget indie vibe, presentation values are a bit sketchy but charming. The actual gameplay is pretty solid. It's basically a Super Meat Boy-ish type game where you uh... control a slime that was eaten by a giant worm and you're trying to escape I guess and have to get through short stages (each made up of 4 screens basically) with a bunch of wall jumping and this and that before the stomach acid? catches up to you. For added challenge you can try to get the apple in each stage.

I'm only about 8 stages into what appears to be 100ish? so I can't really say much more, just wondering if anyone else tried this out or even knows it exists and if so, what you thought?

I was about to get this when it launched, but I didn't because of my backlog. Didn't seem very interesting when I just looked at the screenshots, but after watching some gameplay I got convinced it would be right up my alley. It seems to have a bit...I don't know, meme-y humor going on, but other than that it seems quite charming. Would love to hear some impressions.

EDIT: Ah, there are impressions! That post wasn't there when I posted my post. My internets are having a really bad day today.

Early impressions. And to be honest, I'm probably not the best person to ask, because these twitch platformers are not generally my favorite thing. In fact I heard about this game a week ago or so and held off because of that, but last night I just really wanted something mindless to mess with for a few minutes here and there (all the other games I'm playing right now work best with a large time commitment, so I don't have much pick up and play stuff) so I bought it on a whim.

It's pretty solid so far though. And there are a LOT of stages, which makes me wonder if it will keep introducing new and interesting mechanics or get a bit tired eventually...

It looks pretty cool, and seems chock full of content. I've almost bought it a couple of times. The rudimentary two-player minigames are tempting!

I got through the first world (of 5?) and it's definitely growing on me a bit. There is nothing that is super OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS but the stages all seem pretty well designed, more or less, and enough new stuff is added regularly to keep it interesting. I think I might even like it more than Super Meat Boy. So far. Tough to say.

@Anand In context it seems like those games were made by friends of the developers or something? At least, that is what I gather from the strange and barely coherent dialog in the room they appear in.

Which would go a long way in explaining why a bunch of random mini-games that don't seem to fit the basic theme or style appear in this game.

Isn't this the game that has a minigame that is essentially Doom?

Hmm, not really sure, I didn't try out the mini-games. I think you need to unlock them with apples and the way the shop area is set up there were a ton of shops before the arcade so I had already wasted all of my apples before I got there, lol. I have a bunch more now though.

Incidentally I played a bit off-screen last night and though the analog stick works fine, it really makes me wish there were a digital pad when playing off-screen. I feel like I didn't think twice about that with Sonic but I definitely noticed it here, probably because this game requires a lot more precise movements.

Got my Limited Run copy of the Superslime Edition today. Very nice package, I gotta say, being the sucker for colour instruction manuals that I am. Don't want to get into this at the moment since Shocktoberfest's going on, but this could end up being one of my Newgameber games, if that's a thing this year. Looking forward to some high precision platforming at any rate!

@r_hjort
It's a fun game, but don't overhype yourself about the DOOM-killer included within!

@Anand
Haha, no worries! I just think it seems to be a nice and somewhat ambitious easter egg for a game like this. I've looked up some footage of the various minigames and don't expect too much.

Hmm, just found out that a Chicago buddy of mine is programming the stage creator for this game, which I assume will hit in a future update?!

@Zero
I think that's already in the game? There's a section in my manual about the stage creator, anyway.
10/09/18, 07:58
Then he is adding to it or something? I don't know I saw them talking on Twitter.

@Zero
No, you're right! It's being added to the PC version this fall, and possibly Switch at some point. I didn't read the stage creator part of the manual very carefully. There's a tiny character in the corner (Sheeple, whom I'm not familiar with yet on account of not having played the game) that jokes about the demand for a stage creator, and that the instructions in the manual are merely for drawing your own stage. Like, in the manual.

Now that I look at it there is actually no real instructions on how to do anything, I just didn't get the joke when I skimmed through the manual. Sorry about that.

Playing this now, currently on the second world.

It was hard to get into at first after having played Celeste so much, 'cause this has a very different feel - which is great for the sake of variety even though I vastly prefer Celeste - and different controls, which at times feel more imprecise than I'd like. But that may just be me screwing up without knowing.

Anyway, it's starting to click with me, and I'm having a good time! Getting all the apples in every level was such a breeze up until a few levels ago when the game just slapped me across the face and decided I'd had enough apples for one game. I have managed to get all four in the last couple of levels, but it's been much more demanding than before. It's probably more a matter of a quick escalation than actual difficulty that caught me by surprise, but it was a rude awakening.

I finally finished this game! I got all of the apples except for a couple of the sidescroll / boss levels, because I didn't realize they HAD apples at first, and when I finally realized it, I was too lazy to go back. Maybe someday.

Slime-san is pretty cool but Celeste came out after it and... yeah. Celeste is way better! But Slime-san ain't bad!
