Same! Seeing him zoom past in his fancy outfit had me giggling (although not as much as seeing him swim around with his huge flippers earlier), and when I saw his giant gun contraption on the train I laughed out loud. It's not enough that he builds a giant gun, but he also builds a giant hand to fire the gun.

Double posting just because the opening animation song is so damn good.

On the last boss right now. I usually don't fancy the final worlds in Sonic games all that much, and sadly Mania doesn't seem to be an exception. Or maybe it's just because I suck so bad.

EDIT: I think my problem with certain final worlds is that they tend to (in my opinion, at least) overcomplicate gimmicks and/or cram in too much precision platforming with borderline trial-and-error enemy placement and traps all over while not allowing me to run as much or as fast as the earlier worlds do.

Either way every other world has been terrific, and I can't wait to go back and replay the game, try to snag all the chaos emeralds and just screw around in general. Damn fine Sonicking, this.

DAMN fine Sonicking, indeed.

Also, apparently the game has cheat codes!

Would have been nice to be able to have all three of Sonic's abilities (Drop Dash, Insta-Shield, and Peel-Out) all available at the same time instead of having to choose one. Disabling the Super Sonic music would also be nice. Would also be cool to play around with that Super Sonic flight in every stage.

Finished Mania Mode with Ray. That makes one All Emeralds run for each of the five characters, plus another for Sonic+Tails.

Not much else left to do! I'm not really a Time Trials guy in most games, but I've been considering giving it a try here, since the Time Trials mode has some nice features (quick restart, ghost races, etc.)

And because, wow, Ray seems broken!

It'd be cool if I could get a handle on his flight like that...can't wait to see what speedruns look like for Sonic Mania Plus.

@nate38
That looks almost like Super Mario World's cape speedruns level of broken. Pretty cool! I haven't even tried playing as anyone but Sonic so far, and I've only got three emeralds! I need to get to work.

@r_hjort They did a great job of making Sonic in particular fun to play as in this game. With the new drop dash, he might just be my favorite of the whole cast. And with the elemental shields and optional insta-shield, his special abilities kind of overshadow the rest of the cast anymore! Ray's the only real competition for #1 for me, as his glide is so smooth and fun.

Behind the scenes of Sonic Mania Adventures, which honestly I might love just as much as the actual game. I've watched each of the five episodes at least a dozen times.

I like Time Trials! You really get to know a stage when you play it over and over again, racing your own ghost, looking for the quickest route and best ways to exploit the landscape.

I'm ranked in the top 100 for both Acts of Chemical Plant as well as Green Hill 2 (on Steam, at least, I'm guessing these leaderboards aren't multiplatform). But Green Hill 1 is super competitive, and I'm just inside the top 300 there...for comparison's sake, I got #129 on my first try at Studiopolis, basically just holding right the whole time. I'm guessing a lot of people just went for a good run through Green Hill 1 and then put Time Trials mode back on the shelf.

EDIT: Now at #14 for Studiopolis Act 2! And the top three have blank times, so maybe they hacked or something? I see a lot of blank times at the top of all these leaderboards. Hax?! I'm also seeing some of the speedruns at Speedrun.com are using glitches clip through big chunks of the level, and may have been patched out.

I suck at the time trials! I like them, but I suck. My main problem is that I'm extremely inconsistent with my drop dash, for whatever reason. Even when I feel certain that I try to perform it identically to a previous instance when it worked, sometimes it just doesn't. I don't think it's the game, 'cause the controls are tight and great and everything, but there's something wrong with my timing or something. Any pointers?

EDIT: Actually, I think I might have figured out what my problem is. I think my pro controller d-pad sometimes interprets a right input as a down input.

My Green Hill Act 1 time is at around 47 seconds right now (which isn't too hot) but I could easily shave off ten or more seconds (which isn't too hot either I guess) if I had consistent drop dashing. I actually played through the whole game without using drop dashing, so I need a lot of practice now.

EDIT: Alright, so knowing what my problem was I managed to get down to 38 seconds. 600-something best time in the world! Hooray!

@r_hjort That's not bad at all! I'm only slightly faster at about 35 seconds, and it took me plenty of tries to get that low. I imagine there are a lot more folks on the leaderboards for Switch than for Steam as well. What route are you taking through GHZ? You should post your replay!

And you know for the Drop Dash you don't need to touch the D-pad at all, right? You just hold the jump button for about half a second and Sonic will rev up mid-air.

@nate38
Yeah, but when I try to reach a certain platform or avoid a certain obstacle I tend to press the directional inputs quite vigorously, and sometimes my timing is off, and my d-pad thinks I'm pressing down, so instead of a drop dash I get the standard crouching spin move. At least that's what I think I was doing.

The best time on Switch is 26 or 27 seconds something, I think, and that feels impossible for me, but I'd like to get into the top 100 with a sub 32 time. Should be theoretically possible with the route I took, if I can only stop running into rocks and walls (but I don't expect to be able to actually pull it off). Speaking of the route, I'm not even sure how to describe it. When I got my best times I was actually trying to take another route, but I screwed up and fell down in a spot I didn't plan after I had landed a pair of power sneakers and basically panicked my way to the goal. I haven't even got the best way to fall down there intentionally down, to be honest.

Not sure how I would go about posting my replay, but I might look into it if I get a better result than what I've already got.

EDIT: Down to 36,5, but holy shit I'm doing so many mistakes. If I pull off a great start I end up getting stuck on some rock later on, or forgetting to dash in the middle. This is so hard.

@r_hjort I think you could use the capture button on the Switch to record a replay and then post that to Twitter or wherever. Though that might still be limited to 30 seconds. I can't remember if they ever updated that...

Yeah, honestly GHZ1 might be my least favorite Time Trials level of the ones I've played (the first 8, i think?). The "hazards" aren't really that interesting. It's like, "oh that rock is in the way, dang," and "these walls are slightly awkward to jump over at high speed." So if you're getting burnt out on GHZ1, I'd recommend trying another and coming back. I really liked both acts of Studiopolis, which are good about encouraging you to try different routes in addition to optimizing your movement.
08/01/18, 00:39
@nate38I don't have a Twitter account, through. Or a sub 30 time. Currently at 35,9. At this point I'm so into GHZ1 that I'll probably keep at it until I'm happy with my time or sick of Time Trials altogether. We'll see.
08/01/18, 21:51
@r_hjort Don't get sucked into the GHZ1 vortex! There are plenty of other Times to Trial! Better Times!
08/02/18, 02:49
@nate38
Well, now I definitely want to take a break from the time trials. I got a 35,10 but the leaderboards doesn't accept the time since I got a connection error just after the race. So now my leaderboards time is my second best time. Bah! The leaderboards doesn't really matter to me as such, I just want to see if I can achieve the goals I set up for myself, but this was annoying.
08/02/18, 12:33
@r_hjort Blech, that sucks. Yeah I didn't realize you had to be connected for runs to be valid for the leaderboard, some of my earlier ones I played in Steam's Offline Mode. Luckily I beat those pretty easily later when I had my internet back.

Here's some Sonic Mania Plus art I know you guys wanted to see

@nate38
Pretty nice. I like that they went with the airbrushed 90's style for the artworks. Feel like they could have gone crazy with it in this pic and it would only have made things even better!

Got this from the library, going to try to carve out some time to fire it up tonight!

@nate38
Still don't feel the need to go back! I'm definitely gonna come back to the game in general though. There are so many things I haven't done and seen.
