More cartoons!

I liked the first one a lot more, but this was also good. Tails is never not good. Tails never fails.

Also some footage from what I'm assuming is Sonic Mania Plus's Encore Mode at the end, where stages have visual changes and presumably a few layout alterations.

More Cartoons & Knuckles!

Knuckles you DOPE

Thanks for keeping this thread updated! I hopped in looking for some updates and you had already posted them. Honestly surprised it'll be free, which is great. Also, is the multiplayer a side mode like in the genesis games, or is it for the main story?
06/05/18, 16:20
@Hero_Of_Hyrule Oh, it's not actually going to be free! They didn't announce a price right away and some outlets took that as "it's free!" but the Sonic Mania Plus update is actually going to be $5 DLC. There may be some patched content released for free alongside the Plus update (leaks have shown there's a spiffy new menu layout that includes a "go to eShop and purchase Sonic Mania Plus" button), but the bulk of the content will be behind that paywall.

The Versus multiplayer mode is the same split screen race mode that was in the original Sonic Mania package, i.e. pick a stage from the main game and race through it (a few stages are excluded, like both versions of Mirage Saloon Act 1). The Plus update will just make it support four players and have a few new options for screen ratios.

There's a fourth Sonic Mania Adventures cartoon, and this is it!

Maybe my least favorite so far (I'd merely give it a 9.5/10), but it's kind of a table-setter for the finale I think.

Sonic Mania Plus is less than a month away! Still haven't decided if I want to just get the $5 upgrade for my Steam version, or if I want to get it from the Switch eShop to have a more portable version, or if I want to go all the way and get a physical edition.

@r_hjort

That's pretty awesome-looking. I dig all the collectible crap like that!

But I'm dumping a bunch of money into getting the first-run/limited edition versions of Shining Resonance Refrain and Octopath Traveler this month, so I'm holding off on this. Plus, I already own the original "physical" release of this game so....yeah. I'm good, right?

...right?

@r_hjort I'm anything but a collector, but even I'm tempted...

Sonic Mania Plus, only one week away!

Encore Mode sounds pretty cool, now that we have more details on it. It's a sort of Hard Mode where level layouts have been changed up to be a bit more dangerous in spots, and each of your "lives" is one of the five playable characters. You start out with just Sonic, and you get extra lives/characters by finding monitors with them inside. If you die as Sonic, not only did you lose one of your precious few lives, you can't play as Sonic again until you find a monitor with him in it. You're also controlling two characters at a time (think Sonic and Tails in normal mode), and can switch between them as you like. Not sure if it supports two-player co-op, but I'd guess it does.

It also has a new bonus stage!

Definitely looking forward to picking this up on Tuesday.

@nate38 Oh my god that sounds fantastic. I love when games have you cycle between playable characters instead of just lives. Bloodstained did this recently to great effect. I'm a fan even if it's just cosmetic, like choosing different colored Yoshis who can permanently die in Yoshi's Story.

Sonic Mania Plus is out!

I played about an hour of Encore Mode. Here's stuff:

-- No time limit! The timer went right past 10 minutes and kept on ticking.

-- Death/restart is seamless! If you die, your next available character immediately spawns at the last checkpoint. It's pretty slick.

-- Remixed levels! They're a bit more remix-y than I thought, or maybe I've just already forgotten the finer details of these massive stages.

-- Bonus Stage rings have been moved! Some are in the same spots, but I've gone to a few spots where I'm pretty sure they were before, and there was instead a monitor or something else waiting.

-- New Catch The UFO Bonus Stages! And they're hard. It took me three tries just to get the first one, and I failed the second one twice.

-- New pinball bonus stage! It's the one in the video above. It's...fine. You can cheese it really easily to get all five characters and a bunch of rings and shields and stuff. It's basically endless, as far as I can tell.

Mighty and Ray are fun! Ray's flight is especially fun to play around with, but Mighty's ground pound isn't a bad choice either.

And finally, CARTOONS

Worth five buck$ for someone that enjoyed Sonic Mania last year?
07/18/18, 06:01
@TriforceBun There are worse ways to spend five $mackers. The levels don't have any new gimmicks, but they have more spikes! And their layouts have definitely changed at least a little, but it's hard to say how much without playing them side by side. There might be more substantial surprises in store later, but I haven't played past Studiopolis yet.
07/18/18, 06:16
Got my copy today! A bit late, but worth waiting for. Has to be the nicest standard physical release on a Nintendo system I've seen in ages. Absolutely gorgeous. Almost makes me forget that I haven't even played the game in any form yet.
07/18/18, 14:30
Made it through Press Garden in Encore Mode today. I'm pleasantly surprised by the tweaked sections of stages, and having a blast looking for Special Stage rings in new places. Encore mode as a whole just flows really well, with the lack of a time limit and quick respawns.

I also managed to snag three Chaos Emeralds so far, but man, they're tough this time around. I had at least three tries at each one before I finally got it.
07/19/18, 05:09
Finished! After at least five tries, I managed to snag the final Disarray Diamond in Metallic Madness. I was worried I wouldn't be able to get them all by the end of the game, thereby shaming myself and all who would associate with me.

I was sorta hoping there'd be some big new surprise at the end, but no such luck. Still, overall Encore Mode was a good excuse to play Sonic Mania again, with a bit more variation in the remixed layouts than I expected, too.

In other news, the Sega Ages line of Genesis ports to Switch (starting in August) have some unexpected treats: Sonic 1 will have the spin dash and even the drop dash added!

The official website (translated) said:
Sega Ages: Sonic the Hedgehog

Original Mode:
Enjoy the original Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog. Stage selection, which was a cheat code in the original version, can be turned on / off at startup. Additionally, the “Spin Dash” action added in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and “Drop Dash” action aided in Sonic Mania have also been added (which can be disabled in the game options). Also, in addition to the standard Japanese and overseas game versions, you can also choose to play the Mega Play version. Mega Play was a Sega Genesis / Mega Drive formatted for arcades to play popular Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games. The Mega Play version is a time attack game where the goal is to clear familiar stages within the time limit, allowing players to enjoy a condensed form of Sonic the Hedgehog‘s thrill and sense of speed through stages configured to emphasize speed.

Ring Keep Mode: A support mode added in 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for 3DS. Since the player will always start the stage with 10 rings, it is easy to come back from boss battles or mistakes made right after the stage begins.

Challenge Mode: 1) A worldwide ranking mode where players compete to clear “Green Hill Zone Act 1” with the best time. 2) A worldwide ranking mode where players compete in score attack in the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version. Even just one mistake will end the challenge.

Sonic Mania is so good it's going back in time and modding past Sonic games, apparently. I might double-dip (septuple-dip?) for that Mega Play arcade version, myself. Curious to see what that was like.

I'm still a little weirded out that Sega has so many different "enhanced" versions of Sonic 1 out there, and they're wildly inconsistent on what extra features they added. Also, you'd think they would want to use Christian Whitehead's widescreen remaster for mobile devices, considering it has tons of extra features and wouldn't require AM2 or whoever to do all the authentic Genesis emulation tech like they did for the 3D Classics version (based on the interviews with them it seemed like a TON of extra work...).

Started playing Mania today, and holy shit it's so good. Like, I can't believe how good it is. I'm glad I hadn't kept up with the game at all, so that I get all these wonderful surprises. Like the Mean Bean Machine boss, for instance. I've basically been grinning and laughing like a fool the whole time here.

Ran through the standard Mania Mode as Mighty this morning. The game crashed when I did Mighty's Hammer Drop while the boss was exploding, and apparently there are a lot of other glitches and crashes in the Steam version of the game since the update. Thankfully I haven't run into any others, but yeah that one was annoying.

@nate38
The resemblance is uncanny. Speaking of Robotnik/Eggman, I don't think I've ever liked him as much as I do in this game. He's got so many delightfully silly shenanigans going on.

The game's just so crammed with stuff overall! Clever little visual designs and things happening. Like how those totem pole birds' beaks function as pinball flippers and so on. Love it to bits.
07/21/18, 22:15
@r_hjort I can't decide if my favorite Eggman-branded product is the Egg TV intro in Studiopolis Act 2 or the delightful Egg Train in (the otherwise ho-hum) Mirage Saloon Act 1.

He's got his little conductor hat on and everything!
