Replaying this game is such a joy right now! Looks better than before, runs better, controls better. And it was all good to begin with. Gonna have to start playing this online regularly again. Haven't even booted up the multiplayer since the patch came! Forgive me cyber demon, for I have not sinned.

Nintendo-only gamer playing his first Doom game ever!

My buddy gifted me this as an early birthday present. I've only been able to put about half an hour in so far, but I'm quite impressed. Already, certain elements of the storytelling and environmental detail are giving me a Metroid Prime vibe, and the damage+melee aspect of the combat has shades of RE4. Considering my opinion of those games, that's high praise from me. Also, the motion control aiming is a joy. Looking forward to more carnage on my Switch (when my kids are asleep, of course).

@TriforceBunYou've never played Doom? Not even the originals back in the early 90's? You poor man.

Glad you're having fun!

Dude. Play Doom 64. It's magnificent.

If this is your first Doom - cool, it's a fantastic game - but the old Doom games are such amazing classics. Still. Even if you won't be blown away by the graphics and sound, or the 3D (-ish) gameplay the way you would have been back in the day, they're still amazing accomplishments in game and level design.

I also agree with @carlosrox that you should play Doom 64, but I think you should start off with the first two on your PC or something. They introduce the various concepts better, and by and large have better level designs and progression, IMO. Doom 64 is an overlooked gem, though. The true Doom 3.

Everyone keeps saying that the new DOOM is a great evolution of the Doom franchise, but, like Mario 64, it doesn't really feel similar to me at all. It's still a really fun game, though.

But, yeah. The first DOOM is a classic.

I was always partial to the N64 version of Quake II. An unsung gem. Great multiplayer, too. Ditto for Duke Nukem: Zero Hour.

The 2016 Doom sure did away with the puzzles and most of the traps - much to my chagrin - but I think they nailed the gunplay. To me it feels similar to old Doom in the sense that it rewards quick reflexes, enemy movement pattern memorization and strafing, even though there's a ton of new stuff shoved in there, like the glory kills (which I like because of their risk/reward aspects) and the jumping around.

Maybe it's more that it feels more like Doom than any other shooter has felt like Doom the past fifteen years or whatever, rather than it feeling a ton like Doom itself. Not sure if that sentence makes a whole lot of sense.

I personally place the original DooM alongside the likes of Super Mario Bros. and Tetris and etc. as the sort of historical game that everyone should play at least once. I'm sure I'm over-hyping it, but I really do think it's one of the greatest games ever made.

I've been saying this for 20 years, quit stealing my lines, you! ;)

Seriously, it's like you dudes are pasting from my posting history.

Agreed! I'll steal this too, you know. When it comes to level design I think Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda and Doom have tons of valuable lessons to teach us. The way all Doom's levels are beatable with nothing but the pistol, but still manage to be challenging and rewarding with a bigger arsenal, for instance.

Zelda 1 taught me that Lynels are assholes.

BotW decided I had forgotten this lesson and hammered it home for me again.

@Mop it up
I still remember that Duke Nukem: Zero Hour got one star in Next Generation magazine, because the reviewer got hit by a car and was instantly killed at the end of a 45 minute level.

@r_hjort
I can see that. It definitely doesn't play like Call of Duty. But when I think of DOOM, I think of labyrinthine levels with swarms of enemies and key cards galore. When I think of DOOM (2016), I think of that almost Haloesque shooting/melee/grenade balance, mixed with some exploration elements.

Yeah, now that I think of it, it feels like a more linear, visceral take on Halo. Halo meets Breakdown?

@Shadowlink
With an even bigger hammer, in my experience.

@Anand
I read that as "Halo meets Breakout" and couldn't for the life of me figure out how you were thinking.

But yeah, I largely agree with you. Doom should have more labyrinths and stuff. There are a couple of levels in Doom 2016 (in Hell) that I feel are reminiscent of that to some degree (or at least reminiscent of the more simplistic levels out of Quake 1), but not to 100%.

Now that I think about it, I think a big part of what differentiates the new Doom from the old is that most of the substantial enemy encounters happen in small areas where you're more or less forced to hang around until everyone is dead. It's like you're constantly being served miniature versions of Dead Simple from Doom 2 or something.

I'd really like if a sequel could bring in more non-linear levels and the feeling of not knowing what enemies lurk in the next area, more like the originals. I enjoy the Gore Nests and wouldn't want to see them go away entirely, but I'd like less reliance on them for providing intense moments, you know?

Doom is still my favorite FPS since I don't know when, but there's room for improvement. I hope id Software has a sequel for us at E3.

Now I'm trying to envision Halo meets a block breaker game. Maybe the ball is a grenade? But you can also you use weaker guns? And the blocks move around and work together? Oh, and you're at the center of a 360 degree field.

Now it just sounds like Commando.

I kinda missed out on the original Doom for a few reasons--I've never been much of a PC gamer, I've never been much of an FPS gamer, and I was a little too young and turned off by the gore when it came out. I might have a newfound appreciation of it now though.

I'm certainly enjoying the Switch's Doom though! I just finished the third mission with a decent amount of collectibles, and everything's finally coming together clearly for me between the unlockables, the combat system and the weaponry. The health/ammo/fuel balance seems well thought-out, and I enjoy the game's arcadey focus on combat. Shooting from the hip while strafing around reminds me of the good ol' days of Perfect Dark before FPSes went in a completely different direction.

Sometimes the big swarms of enemies in yet another arena get a little old, but it's largely an entertaining game.
05/05/18, 06:40
@TriforceBun
For what it's worth, I think the enemy swarms get more interesting a bit later on. The locations and the enemy types and so on, and how they make you think more about how to conserve ammo and health, when to use your chainsaw and when to go for glory kills.
05/05/18, 13:08
It's refreshing to play a game with an old fashionned love of its weapons, they all feel distinct and useful in different ways. And the gore drenched levels are so playful despite their atmosphere, encouraging you to enjoy dashing and jumping, rarely standing still, never cowering behind cover. It has the energy and punchiness of the classic Dooms.

Perfect for Switch, especially since the motion control update which really loosens up how you play.

It's a damn fine shooter. Have you played the multiplayer any? It's more Quake than Doom, but it's a lot of fun!

I kinda assume I'll be destroyed playing online in any games. I can hold my own in Splatoon but I generally don't even try other games' multiplayer. Cool to hear it's fun (do players glory kill each other?)
05/26/18, 15:00
@Infinitywave
Maybe you can do what I do, and just stick to the team modes? From my experience players in general are really good at helping out new players. Also, when you first start out you're more or less quarantined to one particular mode for newbs only, so that you get to practice around people of equal suckage.

And yes, you can glory kill other players! You need to get close enough to perform a melee attack when they're on the brink of death, but it can be done! Or you can turn into a demon and more or less do glory kills by default. That's a ton of fun too.
