Welcome to the official discussion thread for Celeste on the Switch!

So this just came out for Switch and is a pretty fantastic title so far that I haven't really seen anyone talk about here so why not have a thread to bring it to people's attention a bit more? I'm sure that some may pass up on it for now due to being just a Super Meat Boy clone and while it does play similarly, it definitely has a lot more going for it with an involved story, fun characters, creepy and hard hitting themes that I just did not expect. And that soundtrack is so, so good. But back to its gameplay, it's a bit more open in design while still remaining fairly linear but rather than have small set pieces, it's a bigger level with challenge rooms chained together while keeping the exploration aspect for those that want to hunt down for secrets/optional challenges. It never really feels like the game is unfairly hard though and its controls are tight and precise, making overcoming its difficulty a rewarding and fun experience. So check it out if you haven't done so already! And if you have, talk about it here!

Welp, got to the credits. As Big G says above there were some pretty wild parts in that last stretch, but nothing that felt undoable.

Overall I'd say... I loved the game!

Storywise I feel like it actually resonated with me pretty closely. I won't talk about it too much here but it took on an important thing and did it well. It's interesting to me too seeing an "action" game that blends the story with the game concept and gameplay, something I'm trying to do with my game as well, so it's a bit inspiring.

Gameplay was great too. Lots of variety, and just tough enough to push me without feeling too over the top difficult.

Small thing though, I really wish the harder stages would just unlock automatically after finishing the main game. I get that it is "secret" stuff but they have to know that most people will just go online and look it up, just feels like an added annoyance to me. Might even keep me from doing it, I know I could probably do it pretty quickly, but it feels like an extra unnecessary step that is a bit of a barrier. We'll see.

/EDIT. Nevermind, I just used IGN's guide and got all the tapes, it only took about a half hour. But I guess there are also the crystal hearts to find? And they unlock the mountain core? I haven't found like any of those. Guide for that.

@Zero
There are other ways to get crystal hearts. All the B-Sides reward a crystal heart at the end.
03/12/18, 06:57
You only need 4 crystal hearts to unlock the thingy, right?

I finished the first b-side... man that was intense! Not sure how many more of these I will finish. But I already had one crystal heart, so that gives me two.

Anyone else doing the b-sides? They're tough! I just finished the stage 6 b-side with over 1,000 deaths. Just 2 more b-sides to go!

I might need a break though. If it gets much harder...

Well, I finished the first seven b-sides and was ready to go to the last one except I can't because now I need to collect 7 more hearts to get in. I love this game, but it's annoying that you have to collect so much stuff to unlock bonus levels. Honestly one of my least favorite indie game trends is content locked behind obtuse puzzles that have nothing to do with the main gameplay. Just let me play the game!

Also apparently there are c-sides too?! Geeeeeeeez.

Jesus these c-sides are going to drive me crazy. They're just a couple of screens each but it took me like almost 300 deaths just to get past level 2's c-side. I don't even want to know how bad the rest of them will be.

It might help if I wasn't using an analog stick. Probably like 80% of my deaths are from dashing in the wrong direction. I know the Switch classic controller d-pad has some issues but it might be worth trying out.

I might do the B-sides some day, but I had to move on after trying to collect one of the late-game strawberries just broke me. Certainly got more than my money's worth from the game as it is.

I know what you mean about the D-pad, though, @Zero. I played with the stick as well because I just didn't like how things felt with the Switch D-pad, and I didn't really mind because deaths don't matter a whole lot at the end of the day.

@Zero

Honestly your enthusiasm for this game has single handedly convinced me to check it out. Don't have the funds right now, but it has now gone onto my list! So thanks!

@J.K. Riki

If nothing else, it's great bang for your buck. There's a ton of really good content and lots of replayability on top of that.
04/14/18, 20:20
@TheBigG753 This is mostly true but once you get to some of the b-sides and c-sides precision starts to matter a LOT. A few of them are basically just a really long string of near pixel perfect air dashes in every direction. Died a LOT on those.

@J.K. Riki It's great! And don't let my anxiety over b-sides / c-sides scare you off, these are just bonus levels you unlock. The main game is challenging without being too over the top, and I think there is some kind of Nintendo-like assist mode for any parts that get too rough, though I never had to use that so I don't know exactly how it works.

I had intended to do all of the c-sides but chapter 5 is where it just gets ridiculous. You pretty much need to do a bunch of perfect wall boost jumps coming OUT of bubbles on tiny little chunks of wall and yeah... not really happening. I might just have to retire this one. We'll see.

@Zero
Oh geez I just watched a video of that level. It looks like a real pain in the ass!! Doable, but very frustrating and exact.

Just finished the game! Really enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to, the movement is so much fun and the story was so focused that it didn't feel preachy, it's about one specific thing and that's totally fine. And obviously the art and music are amazing as well.

I enjoyed finding the Crystal Hearts, though I stumbled upon them pretty naturally as I was playing the game. Tried the Chapter 3 B-Side and decided it was too hard to be worth it. Played a little bit of The Core and got stuck. I think I've gotten my fill of this game; is it worth pushing through a little longer or should I call it? I assume there isn't anything too crazy I haven't seen, right?

@Secret_Tunnel I don't remember there being much storywise past the point you're at, but my memory is bad. I think there was SOMETHING storywise at the end of the core... I just forget what and how substantial?!

/EDIT I just went on Youtube and refreshed my memory... the end part of the core is cool! Maybe not essential though. But cool! And has some small story stuff involved.

Gameplaywise I found the core and the b-sides to be pretty tough but doable. C-sides is where it starts to get freaking utterly ridiculous and I gave up.

@Secret_Tunnel

I feel like I'm in the same boat as Zero. I got up to the C-sides and then dropped the game without finishing them. Just stop playing when it stops being worth it. The point of the game is about the value of overcoming a challenge, but if the challenge is so great that it saps all sense of reward from beating it, it's probably time to put the game down and move on to something more fulfilling. Maybe you can get some more fun out of hunting for strawberries or secret hearts? But the value of those things is mostly intrinsic anyway. Basically, when you stop enjoying the game, stop playing it. I would say that you're missing something if you push yourself to play beyond the point of diminishing returns.

I've been savouring the B-sides for a while, but beat the core's B-side today and unlocked the C-sides. Tried out the first one and no, yeah, nope. Too much frame perfect stuff for me. Or stuff that feels close to frame perfect to a noob such as myself, anyway. The B-sides were perfect for me in terms of challenge, so I'm just gonna leave this as it is.

Btw, if you want your Celeste playing minds blown, check out this TAS from last SGDQ. The moves are insane, and you get a full run of the C-sides as well.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

That's my philosophy on completionism, once it stops being fun I quit. But sometimes there's something amazing that requires a short amount of boring investment, so I'll do what it takes if I really like the game--I decided to look up a guide for the last six shrines I had in BotW and was very underwhelmed by the reward, I thought there'd be something more haha.

@r_hjort

That was the first video I looked up when I beat the game, I LOVE TAS and have been waiting to watch that for a while. Crazy stuff!

Free DLC! Hooraaaaaaaay!

Harder than C-sides! Fuck ooooooooofffff!

Seriously though, this is really cool, but if it's harder than the hardest challenges currently in the game I might not even bother trying it out.
01/12/19, 16:41
Lol yeah I didn't even beat the final bonus chapter on A-side, I probably won't touch this. How many people even bothered with the C-sides to begin with!?
01/12/19, 20:50
I mean I'll check it out but if it is harder than c-sides I'll give up very fast.
