Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

I assume my invitation is on its way.

Does Smash being at E3 point to it being more or less likely that it's a port?

@TriforceBun I think the fact that it's scheduled for 2018 yet we've seen nothing of it is the best argument in favor of a port. Brawl and Smash 4 each had looooong marketing cycles with tons of information drip-fed over the course of 16+ months after their reveals (both of which showed gameplay and weren't just CG teasers).

If Smash Switch really is Smash 5, then that means Sakurai / Nintendo have abandoned the sustained drip-feed of information that were a big part of the pre-release marketing of Smash 3 and 4. Which seems a bit unlikely to me, but maybe Sakurai doesn't think it's worth the effort anymore. The Smash 4 daily screenshots were already a big step down from Brawl's daily blog posts, so I suppose the marketing cycle was already scaling down between 3 and 4. Maybe this is just another (massive) scale down between 4 and 5.

My theory is that Smash is an enhanced Port that got way out of hand, to the point where Nintendo isn't sure whether to call it a port or an original game yet which is why they haven't specified yet.

@r_hjort
That doesn't answer his question :p

@pokepal148
Good theory. I like that.

@nate38 If the game isn't coming out until November at the earliest, from June would still be five months to trickle out info. Might be scaled back from previous games, but still enough time for hype-building.

But if it was just a port why wouldn't they show footage. They could've at least shown a bit of gameplay with the inklings fighting old characters on old stages.

One thing I hope doesn't return in Smash 5: For Glory Hell.

(He's playing with visual mods, which is why his stuff looks different)

Separating the toxic players from the rest of the online playerbase is a nice idea...in theory. But when anybody can be reported, by anyone, for no reason at all, with zero oversight, it just gives assholes another tool to cause grief for us good guys.

I don't really understand what's going on in this video...

I really, really hope they do a more comprehensive online this time. The decisions on the Wii U / 3DS versions were bizarre. You can't play stock with strangers? WHY?!

Marketing in THIS case actually says "less is more."

You get far more buzz (because people know the brand and love it) with a teaser at first than you even would with full gameplay footage. Weird but true. I mean, heck, look at all of us sitting here debating "new game? port?" That doesn't happen nearly as much without the Mystery element. Heck, that trailer is FULL of Mystery, with the silhouetted figured and everything. Not to mention, as @pokepal148 said it's possible Nintendo doesn't even know what this game will officially BE yet. Enhanced port or new game or what.

He's in "For Glory Hell," where a player goes when someone they've played against online reports them. Separated from the main player pool, in For Glory Hell you can only play other players who are in For Glory Hell, which means you wait waaaaaay longer to get into a game and can only get matched with other players who have been reported, most of whom will be jerks. The only way to get out of For Glory Hell is to not play online at all for a few weeks.

So in the video he's in the For Glory waiting room, waits for a long time, finally connects to someone, and they just flash "KYS" (kill yourself) at him a bunch of times and leave. That's basically the For Glory Hell experience.

Actually, it looks like he made another video that explains it much better:

Again, stuff looks different because he plays with visual mods
