@Hero_Of_Hyrule#6 Sonic the Hedgehog Holds up remarkably well for being the first outing in the franchise, but the levels weren't built to take advantage of Sonic's full capabilities quite yet. #5 Sonic 2 Faster! More content! Multiplayer! Unfortunately also picked up a few bad habits, like mashers and more bottomless pits. Kinda peters out in the back half. #4 Sonic & Knuckles The Zones in this half of the True Sonic 3 Experience can be split pretty evenly between Rather Good (Flying Battery, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg) and Just Fine (the rest). #3 Sonic CD I didn't like it the first time I played it. I loved it the second time. Bordering on incoherent in a lot of ways, with crazy color schemes and out-there music and a rather scattershot approach to stage design. Those unorthodox experiments are part of its charm, even when they don't pan out. #2 Sonic Mania This would be on top for sure if its wealth of content skewed more towards original and less borrowed. What's there is mostly excellent, new and old. #1 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG THREE, BABYThe series fully embraces its strengths for the first time and goes wild on the stage design and level gimmicks. It doesn't have the most content, but it's the most consistently great Sonic game for sure. |

It is good to feel good about Sonic again. Rolling Stone's game blog interviewed Christian Whitehead. It's all good stuff. Here's the end. Can you tell me a bit about your plans for the future? Well, I think my immediate plans are to take a bit of a holiday. (Laughs) I’m always thinking ahead in terms of what I want to do tech-wise and creatively. I’ve got my own ideas for what I would do with Sonic, but there’s really no point in telling any of that, because it would have to be a collaborative process with Sega. I think our team has definitely enjoyed working on Sonic a lot, and I’d love to do more. Before I did Sonic Mania, I set up the engine for Freedom Planet 2, and I prototyped a few original games, which I definitely have an interest in pursuing. As far as Sonic Mania 2, initially, I was planning on moving onto an original game, but I couldn’t have imagined working on something this big.
Well, personally, I’m hoping it’s Ristar Mania. (Laughs) It’s funny you say that, because we’ve joked about it in the past. Ristar, Burning Rangers, games like that. Sega has a rich and diverse set of IP, and I think there are many development teams both in and outside Sega that could do amazing things with them. That’s just my personal thought. I couldn’t really imagine this scenario when I was younger. It’s easier now for talented people from across the globe to come together. And that’s exactly what happened with Sonic Mania. |

So apparently there was a patch for this game on the PS4's UK store with some surprising (and welcome) content changes. 1. Zone transitions have been added for some of the later stages that didn't have them! 2. Cutscenes can be skipped. 3. One of the bosses has actually been changed up substantially: Metal Sonic's final form is now...different. 4. The time limit can be switched off in the Options menu! 5. Sonic's unlockable bonus abilities (Insta-Shield, Peel-Out) can now be used in regular save files and not just No Save Mode. It's possible there's more in there that hasn't been discovered yet, too. No word on if this was supposed to be Sonic Mania Plus content (the "Encore Mode"?) that was accidentally leaked, or if it's actually just going to be a nice update for the base game. |

New trailer! First (official) footage of Sonic Mania Plus.
-- Available July 17 -- Visual alterations to level backgrounds, I'm guessing this is the Encore Mode -- Mighty has a ground-pound bounce attack (think Sonic's bubble shield bounce) that seems to be invulnerable to spikes -- Ray can glide in a way reminiscent of Super Mario World's cape
If these additions are free DLC to Sonic Mania owners, I'll probably just download it on Steam. If there's an added price for them, I might just go all the way and pick up a physical copy for Switch. I'm not much for collectors' items, but this is Sonic Mania, so I could make an exception. And it would be nice to have a second Switch game, even if it's something I already own on PC.
EDIT: Just realized that Mighty and Ray's top speed sprite is based on their running animation from SegaSonic The Hedgehog!
Their debut game, and while Mighty would return in Knuckles Chaotix, Ray never did. Weird to see him back now instead of, like, Amy. Bizarre but interesting looking arcade game controlled with a trackball. Wish I could try it sometime. |
