Super Mario Odyssey Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by
A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!

Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!

And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.

@Zero

At first I also thought the "just go grab this new moon that appeared" thing was lame, but then I realized I just honestly enjoy running around this world so much that I'm actually fine with it. It's almost like I beat the game and thought to myself "Man, I wish there was some expansion pack like in Zelda" and then BOOM Nintendo gave it to me for free, lol. I'll take it. This game is a joy.

Basically I just skip around Kingdoms and it doesn't get boring. If I start to get bored in one place, I just jet off to the next and grab a few more moons.

I feel like getting like 40 or 60 or 80 moons in a world is ALREADY an expansion pack though. At this point I don't really need to run around these worlds even more without a clear focus.

All of the stuff with real gameplay involved is fun... the koopa races, new musical note things, the new metal pipes with new areas inside (and the area with the moving background and bullet bills everywhere was one of the first actual challenging ones yet, so I'm hoping the challenge is kicking up now), etc. that's all great. But just running to an X on a map that I've been over tenfold already... not so great. I could honestly do without it.

I wonder if it depends on when you "beat" it. If someone just got a few moons in each area and moved on right away and this was their first time back, that'd be one experience. But I basically got every moon I could in every area (up at around 600 right now), which included going back to the areas multiple times and basically covering every inch of every area several times over, so I'm sort of burnt out on running all over them.

Now, if they had remixed the areas a bit... added new enemies, made some platforming tougher, etc. that would make it worth it... but really it's just the same areas.

I finally made it to the area after the area that I assumed was the final area. I may see the credits before Thanksgiving

@Zero Yeah, I mostly just followed the story events my first time through before going back to worlds, and I have no regrets about that.

@Zero

I ended the game with around 200 moons, so yes, I bet that's a big difference. It still feels fresh to me I suppose!

You could always put the game away for a few months and then go back for the bonus content. That's what I did (am doing) with Breath of the Wild, and I'm excited to return to it later next months.
11/20/17, 21:32
Well...

Fossil Falls seemed to have less "go to X and grab it" power moons than Bonneton and more that had some real gameplay behind them, and one of them even involved adding some new stuff to the overworld (I think?) So if it is more like this moving forward that'd be sweet.
11/20/17, 22:22
I'm going to go ahead and revoke my earlier complaint about a lot of the post-"beating the game" new moons being ones you just run to and grab. I don't know if I was miscounting or Bonneton is an exception or what, but I've played a few other kingdoms now and most of the new moons have at least some small challenge / puzzle / etc. to them, and then you get a few new doors and stuff with some meatier stuff inside too. I also feel like a lot of this new stuff has more skill required too, none of it has been particularly hard so far, but I've definitely died more on some of this stuff than most of the previous content. Pretty solid!

Bowser Kingdom

The Kingdom is just trying to say Mario is Japanese. The last kingdom on the planet MUST be Japan. Nintendo LOVES Japan. Nintendo is proud to represent Japan. Mario had to go home. We MUST see Mario running around in traditional Japanese locations wearing traditional Japanese garb. We made Mario.
He belongs to Japan. He is ours. He must come home to us. We wouldn't feel right about having a game about a global adventure without representing our own home.

That's what that fucking Kingdom was about. Wake up sheeple.

Facts don't care about your feelings.

:D

@Zero
Yay. This gets me hyped.

Yup, the difficulty has picked up to much more enjoyable levels lately. I suppose I'm on the "last" Kingdom before the post game stuff. I look forward to finishing this game so I can stop judging it and just enjoy the game for what it is (this is always liberating and always increases enjoyment of games tenfold).

This game really is amazing, and it is definitely around the ballpark of 3D World which is high praise for me, 3D World is arguably my fave in the series.

I'm sure that post game will send me over the edge.

Ps. I already know what it is. I've seen spoiler pics of it and already figured it out before the game even released. But there's a difference between knowing and experiencing!

Got all the moons a couple of days ago, and now I'm sad that the game's coming to an end. I've still got a few purple coins to get, but I've kind of been holding off on doing that. I think this is one of the bad things about having this open system instead of the Super Mario 64 style where you pick your mission at the beginning of the level, 'cause I find it harder to go in and try to redo the old stuff now. Harder in the sense that it's harder for me to find the same amount of motivation for it. I don't think it outweighs the good things about this open, Banjo-Kazooie type style, but it does change the feel of things a bit, I think.
11/24/17, 12:49
That fucking finale. The music.

You could make a case for this being the best Mario game.

I only have about 12? 13? moons left and almost all of them are "hint photo" moons or "secret path to" moons with a couple of Toadette moons connected to those. The hint photo ones aren't too bad because I generally at least can tell which kingdom to check out, although a few that I have left I've been kind of staring at with no idea where to look. The secret path to ones though... seem like the type that you need to find your first time around. At this rate I really have no freaking clue where to look and I'm not interested in running throughout the whole game again just to find them. So I might cheat there.

PS. F the dark side throwing 10 freaking hint photo moons at you at once! Uggggggggggg.

I think 1 of the Toadette moons I still have left is related to shopping, and I might not have enough purple coins for that... ug.

I do have 2? moons left not related to any of the above. I've been using Hint Toad and the bird so I know where they are and what they are called but I still haven't been able to figure them out. Hmm.

And then of course the absolute final moon... which I plan to wait until the very end to get, but who knows, I might get annoyed by some of those other moons and just go for it.

Almost finished! It would be nice to be done by the time Xenoblade 2 releases (though I might not even get it right away, still deciding...)

@Zero No need to cheat! Or at least, not outright. If you'd like some hints, just post here what you need and I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.
11/28/17, 19:20
That's still cheating though, just... slightly less cheaty.

I'm going to at least give them all the ol' college try myself first before cheating.
11/28/17, 19:22
@Zero I guess, but doesn't it feel better when it's a part of a community rather than just looking up a cold, hard walkthrough? Plus, you don't risk seeing something you didn't want to see. Though I guess there's nothing left to spoil in this case, but in general...
11/28/17, 19:25
Well, I may take you up on this. But I want to try myself first.

The weird thing is one of the "secret path to" moons I have left is in a spot I could have sworn I had already gotten to.
11/28/17, 19:26
Reached the showstopper scene in New Donk. What can I say? Oh, yeah...

Nintendo Magic.

(That song has really grown on me, too!)

Ok I've found everything I can except stuff I'm beating my head against the wall over so time to ask for some hints for the ones that I have left. I'm going to spoiler tag a lot to not give much away.

Mushroom Kingdom - 25 - Light From the Ceiling - I just want to know, is this INSIDE the castle? Because it seems like it is based on the map, but I can't figure out what to do.

Sand Kingdom - 76 - On the Eastern Pillar - I just want to know, do I capture a bullet bill? Because it seems like this could theoretically work, but I can't really get over there in time with one.

Dark Side - 18 - Found With Dark Side Art 4 (the one that has like 8 circles in a circular pattern that kind of look like moons) - I feel like it is suggesting this is in the Moon Kingdom but I couldn't find it so... I just want to know if I should keep looking there, or somewhere else?

Secret Paths - For all of these I just want to know what kingdom to look in.
Wooded Kingdom - 49 - Secret Path to the Steam Gardens!
Seaside Kingdom - 49 - Secret Path to Bubblaine!
Bowser's Kingdom - 43 - Secret Path to Bowser's Castle!

That's it.

@Zero
For the first one, I assume it’s the one that replicates something from Mario 64. To be honest, it was the first thing I tried when I entered the castle.
For people who haven’t played Mario 64, it is a little obtuse.

That said, you should have gotten it easily, you Mario hater.
11/30/17, 02:03
@ploot If you mean look up at the ceiling that's the first thing I tried too! And then tried it like 10 more times! But the ceiling doesn't have light coming down from it!?

/EDIT Oh wait, you have to switch to first person camera. I literally did not know that existed in this game because I never once used it, lololol. I tried all the face buttons before but didn't think to click.

Well, that one is done.

I sort of wonder if noobs who never played Mario 64 would ever think to do that? I only did it in that game because literally controlling a camera was a whole new experience for me so I was doing it all the time.

You have to be in first person mode.
