That's right friends and fighters, Nintendo's newest IP is finally out. The Testpunches are punched and the games are in the mail. Mine arrived today and any moment I'll be diving into the full experience. With a launch that held mixed receptions, Nintendo has done a great job at building the hype around this title and the hype is planned for many months to come. With planned free DLC in the vein of Splatoon, they'll be supporting new characters, stages, and maybe even modes for the rest of the year. With a starting roster of 10 awesome characters, who takes your heart in particular? Ribbon Girl was tied in first for both of our Testpunch polls with Min Min sharing the spot for the first round and the curvaceous Twintelle sharing it in the second. Mechanica and Ninjara were not too far behind.

I plan to be dabbling in a little bit of single player to explore that a bit, but you'll all be seeing me online soon enough! Have fun out there! Wear your mouth piece!

ARMS had a showing at tonight's Nintendo World Championships but they also revealed new content at the end of the show! This looks like a great fun addition for completionists. Also a new character maybe...? Not sure what that was about at the end.

Awesome! I've always wanted to go back to Arms, but there just wasn't enough there for me to feel like I could improve in a meaningful way. Hopefully this adds a bunch of new stuff that'll make it easier to practice.

Is ARMS doing the whole Metal Mario character thing now? Well, I'm not going to complain if it's part of something that draws me back into the game.

@r_hjort

Yeah I wonder if this is just a new character or maybe unlockable special skins when you meet certain requirements with the new badge system.

Special skins or special skills that transform your character would be pretty awesome, I think. When I saw the thumbnail for the video I thought it was just a new ability, but then I noticed the metal legs and stuff.

Cool! New character!

The ARMS round was a highlight of NWC 2018. Also Mario Maker and the obscure stuff.

@Secret_Tunnel
Have you played all of the tutorial stages? I thought that those were pretty helpful with dealing with common player styles, like throw-spamming Ninjaras.

@Anand

I actually thought ARMS at NWC was pretty lame. When John Numbers was up against his opponent, at one point they mentioned something about technical difficulties. I mean he pulled off like what, 3 perfect matches? I mean sure he can be good but when his opponent was basically just standing there at times and barely moving, it should have been looked into a bit more than that.

Nintendo seems to be prepping up for a new arena + character and maybe a special event of some sort?

Gah! Nintendo needs to stop supporting their games! But not really. I've got too much to play right now! Haven't 100 percented Mario yet, I've sadly been neglecting Splatoon 2 for months, Zelda gets new content again, they're giving me new characters to master in ARMS, Xenoblade is just around the corner and I'm currently enjoying Doom while wondering how the hell I'll find time to play Skyrim that arrives on friday.

I heard someone somewhere mention a new plant themed character for ARMS and I got really excited, but looking at the clips up there it looks more like some tribal character living in a temple in the woods. Would have loved a flowery character with vines for arms and flower buds for fists. I'd buy that DLC with real money. But don't tell Nintendo.

I really dig their security cam footage teasers for Arms, haha. Gives the world a little more personality.

@VofEscaflowne
That part was weird, but the other guy also seemed way worse.

I dunno. I think that ARMS is one of the more exciting fighting games to watch, due to the first person perspective.

Well this is part of the mystery. Well sort of

Poison arms!? Ghost arms!?
11/14/17, 18:21
@Secret_Tunnel

Seems likely to be something related to poison I'd say, if the plant theme sticks.

Well the update seems to be hitting tomorrow. Insane we don't even know the details of what is launching but seems we're getting a new character + arena combo, a new status type for weapons and even a new mode. Should be exciting to check out!

Hype!

I still haven't even finished the game with the launch cast lol... this is insane.

I moved onto Max Brass and Lola Pop before I even finished with the default cast.

So, what do you guys think of Misango?

After Lola Pop I have to say I think Misango's pretty boring, even if his stage and music are pretty nice, and the mask thing he's got going with the spirit is cool. I'm sure he's fine, but he doesn't have gummy arms, you know?

Also, how about that event coming up? I'm glad they're taking more stuff out of the Splatoon playbook like that, even if I don't see this being as special as a Splatfest. Especially not now that there's no Miiverse or other community to build hype and atmosphere around it. Still, I'm definitely gonna play this wednesday/thursday if I've got time!

@r_hjort
Like you said, his stage and music are cool. His design is alright. And his default arms are pretty unique. But I have no idea how to use his special abilities!

I don't understand the event yet, either. Can you only use one of two characters? What are the rewards? But I'll try it out.

Anyway, the badges are neat, too. Anything that keeps me away from v-ball grinding is good!

@Anand
Yeah, I have no idea what his special abilities actually do! I'm guessing they increase offense, defense and...oral hygiene...respectively. Beyond them looking snazzy I don't have a clue. Didn't feel a substantial difference in any direction when I tried them out just now, but then again I haven't played enough ARMS to notice the subtleties.

I thought you'd get some sort of bonus points for using one of the two characters during the event, and that the points would translate into money and badges at the end of the event, but I might be mistaken here.

All characters are explained in the help section on the main menu so it's always worth going there for a few extra tips. He's pretty simple to understand but I imagine gets complex with how his powers work.

But yeah, charging has you actually equip the mask while guarding puts up a pillar in front of you that seems to block a few incoming punches, as well as grabs. Yellow mask you automatically block all punches while doing a rush attack. Red mask you can take a few hits before being knocked down. Blue mask you move faster (I think?) and charge faster. Also when you set up a pillar in front of you, if you walk through it, you'll automatically equip the mask based on the pillar's color. It can make for neat ways to rush through it, surprise your opponent and know you have the mask's power.
