Fuck I wish I saw this earlier but nah that can't be right. My bro was playing the game the minute he got it.

I'm operating under the assumption that you're talking about the physical version though. You said "got my copy a day early"...

We were checking it out quickly just outside the EB Games.

It looks good. It has a blurry look to it but it looks good in its own way. To be fair I only saw the first 3 rooms so it's not like I can do a deep dive into how it looks or runs. Even in the beginning I noticed a little bit of slowdown.

But I mean for Switch it's a feat and it still looks amazing even with a much blurrier look and lowered settings.

I'm getting my copy Wednesday I think. Look forward to replaying this game!

@carlosrox
Yeah, I'm talking about a physical copy. I try to get games physically whenever I can. Not sure why the game had me wait for the update, because it didn't seem like I should have had to do that, but oh well, at least I'm able to play it now!

The Switch version obviously looks and runs worse than the others, but holy crap, being able to play this on the go at this level of quality is still impressive to me. Especially since this is a port and everything. I'm sure ground-up Switch games will be able to pull off absolutely crazy stuff in the future, if this is anything to go by.

If graphics are more important than portability then this is obviously not the ideal version, but personally I'm very happy with my purchase. Played some multiplayer on my TV in the comfort of my couch, then brought my Switch down to the laundry room while waiting for the washing machine to be done and played some single player there. The only disappointment was the fact that the screenshots I took in handheld mode looked pretty bad, unlike the ones I'd snapped in docked. Too bad, 'cause I had a pretty cool thing going with an exploding gore nest and zombies gibbing all over the place.

EDIT: Even if you're someone who feels that the graphical downgrade is unacceptable, I don't think there's any denying that a great deal of effort went into making this for the Switch. We're even getting dedicated multiplayer servers and stuff. Maybe that's not a big deal, but it really feels like something that would be the first thing to go if Bethesda just wanted to make a quick buck off the Doom name and the Switch hype.

Does the online multiplayer have any team or co-op modes?
11/11/17, 20:08
@Mop it up
No campaign co-op from what I can tell, but quite a few team based modes for the online multi. Supposedly all the ones the other versions have.

Team Modes:

Team Deathmatch
Domination
Soul Harvest
Warpath
Sector
Freeze Tag
Clan Arena
Infernal Run

Free-For-All Modes:

Deathmatch
Bloodrush
Possession

@r_hjort Now that I think of it, I think I do recall hearing about the no co-op last year. It's a shame, since that was the best thing about original DooM.

Is it possible to party up with people on your friend list, or are teams still random when joining friends?
11/11/17, 20:38
@Mop it up
Good question! I'm honestly not sure how that works. I don't see a 'join friend' option or anything like that, let alone any specifics about joining their team specifically, but then again, I seem to be the only one of my friends to have this. When you're creating private matches you're able to invite friends, and you're seemingly able to adjust the teams in three ways: shuffling them, balancing them based on previous match outcomes, and by switching teams, although I'm not sure how the last one works. Seems to only move yourself from the one team to the other.

Snapped a few screenshots and pulled them from my SD-card. I'm pretty sure there is some compression going on both in the Switch's screenshot function and in Imgur's uploading process, but these should be representative enough anyway. Click the images for full resolution.

First off a mustachioed dinosaur for reference.

A possessed gets blowed up, looks good while doing so.

Not all textures are created equal. Well, not ported equal anyway.

Weapons and enemies are still detailed, but look smoothed out. There might also be some motion blur going here because chainsaw to the face.

A nice little gib before the multiplayer pics.

The game seems to cut out tons of detail when objects go farther from the camera, and then hide that fact with extra depth of field blur.

Up close we can see the custom texture patterns on armour and weapons and such...

...but farther away things get blurry and blob like. Sometimes even on the match result screen, which is ridiculous.
But yeah, this is a handheld hybrid game now. I'll take it.

Beat the level where Olivia Pierce escapes to hell with the argent energy thingamajig, and the game's framerate really took a hit there. Having that many enemies do their thing at once was just too much for my poor Switch, and I don't think it managed to hit 30 fps once during that whole sequence. Not very surprising considering the chaos on display, and the state of the system, but too bad anyway since the game'd ran at the most solid 30 so far up until then. Even the second most chaotic battle right before it had been fine, for the most part.

Despite that little issue I'm having more and more fun with the game, and becoming increasingly thankful for the handheld mode since I don't really want to let the game go. Been taking the Switch out of sleep mode every now and then to go hunting for secrets and playing rune challenges and all that good stuff aaallll day. My biggest problem right now is deciding if I want to play campaign or multiplayer.

I just got my copy and played through the first area, really cool so far. I don't mind the low-resolution on the Switch screen it looks incredible, but I do think they need to increase the size of the type in the HUD and menus, it's REALLY small!

Also couldn't they do the HUD in 1080P so the text was sharper and easier to read even if the game runs in like 500-600P? Just that one small concession would improve the overall presentation a lot!
11/12/17, 23:52
@deathly_hallows
Yeah, the more I play the more the font size bothers me. Right now it's my second biggest issue with the game, after the audio issues. I think the main HUD is good enough with the health and ammo and stuff, but objectives and log info should really be much larger. Not sure what you think, but I think it's worse on the TV than in handheld mode.

Bethesda is working on a post-release patch to fix some of the most common complaints though, so here's hoping we won't have to strain our eyes for too much longer.
11/12/17, 23:58
@r_hjort
I think the text is hard to read in either mode, on the TV it's blurry and on the Switch it's tiny. It's a shame too because the lore as told through log entries etc. is hilarious, unlike most games it's well worth reading every line of copy!
11/13/17, 00:04
@deathly_hallows
I actually sat down and read through all the log entries I've gathered so far earlier tonight. It's really quite amazing how well they pulled off having a relatively well written plot with relatively deep lore while at the same time having a protagonist that evidently doesn't give a fuck about any of it. It satisfies my primal Doom urges as well as my Metroid Prime instincts. Truly brilliant.
11/13/17, 00:16
@r_hjort
Yeah the writing and story is fantastic! I'm actually very exited to play the inevitable sequel because I want to see where the story goes.

So I ran into some audio glitches and some annoying frame-rate hitches, I think I'll wait for the next patch before playing too much more. No big deal I'm still really invested in Wolfenstein 2, so hopefully by the time I finish that this game will be all patched up and running better.
11/13/17, 02:49
@deathly_hallows
Oh right, that's another game for me to keep an eye on. If that runs as well as Doom (and if they sort out the minor issues Doom has right now) I just might have to get that too.

I should have brought my Switch to work today. Got close to nothing to do for the next couple of hours. Would have been excellent to do some online multi in my downtime.

EDIT: I just read on ERA that I should turn off the chromatic abberation to make the game less blurry. D'oh! Don't think I've done that; I only turned off the motion blur 'cause it felt so excessive to me. Gonna have to try turning the CA off and see if I can spot a difference!

EDIT: And apparently some are setting motion blur to 'low' to mask the smallest framerate drops. Sounds like you'd get a slightly blurrier framerate drop rather than a less noticeable one, but hey, I'll give that a shot too.

EDIT: Came back from work, turned off chromatic abberation, and it's sharper now! I mean, obviously it would be, but it's now sharp enough that I won't have to go on about this anymore. At least not in docked mode. Looks great now!

@r_hjortHmm, I'll try that, I'm not even sure what chromatic aberration is I doubt I'll miss it.

I played about an hour of Wolfenstein 2 tonight, getting pretty to close to the end of the Fergus timeline, probably play Wyatt next. But anyway, it's really hard to switch between the two games, they play super differently. Doom is honestly just better, and a lot easier too, W2 is no freaking joke.
11/14/17, 06:38
@deathly_hallows
It's one of those effects that are meant to emulate looking through a camera lens, and it makes the colours kind of blend together in certain ways.

I take it Wolfenstein is a bit stealthier? Never played the previous game either, I've only ever played the original Wolfenstein 3D back in the day.
11/14/17, 08:02
Doom looks stunning. I can't wait to get my copy Wed or Thurs.

In some ways I may find it the most impressive version cuz getting visuals like that on Switch is beyond impressive.

Can you imagine if Metroid Prime 4 looks that good??
11/14/17, 09:08
I finally took the advice of countless people and went to hell yesterday. For some reason I had feared that levels like that wouldn't feel or look as good as the ones with dark, cramped corridors and stuff, but it kind of blew me away with how good it was.

The art direction was obviously very contemporary in the amount of detail and so on, but it still felt very old school Doom to me, and the gameplay was so damn gamey in the best way possible. There was no superfluous fluff to get in the way of shooting stuff and unlocking doors, but it never felt limited or generic anyway. A testament to how well they've pulled off the gameplay.

It's certainly not Doom the way Doom used to be, but it's an impressively well thought out modern day take on it.

@carlosrox
It is seriously cool to be able to pick up my tiny little Switch and play Doom in bed before I go to sleep. Panic Button did one hell of a job with this game, even if it does need a bit of patching still. Audio and framerate needs some work, but the framerate is weird in its inconsistencies.

Like, that one spot that I talked about before, where there were tons of enemies on screen in a relatively small area had my framerate on its knees, but a level I played yesterday had similar amounts of chaos in a bigger arena, and that ran fine with just the occasional hiccup. There was summoning, flamethrowing, infighting, rocket launching, exploding and gibbing galore. Really good stuff!

@r_hjort
I love the design of Hell, the architecture is so cool, I love how you can see a giant ziggurat-like temple in the distance at one part, and all the lore in Hell is top-not insanity.

Yeah Wolf 2 has much more of an emphasis on stealth and story, but there are also plenty of sections where you have to run and gun and in those sections it just doesn't feel as smooth and nimble as Doom. I mean.... after Doom almost every FPS feels pretty lacking, IMHO.

It's a great game though, The New Order is one of my favorite games of the last few years and The New Colossus is definitely a worthy follow up.

@carlosrox
I was thinking about Prime 4 while playing Doom, I think it will actually look better in some ways because there are areas in Doom where they had to really sacrifice the texture quality and geometry etc., and sometimes it can get very low res, like below 480P it seems, it's not often but it can be quite blurry, and then there are the framerate drops. With Prime 4 they'll be able to design it with Switch limitations in mind so it should look much sharper and cleaner. I was playing the original Metroid Prime GCN on Dolphin the other day in 1080P/60 and that game still looks amazing even by today's standards!

@deathly_hallows
Did you turn off the CA in Doom? I played through a couple of stages yesterday, and I never reacted to the game feeling blurry the way I did before. Not in docked mode anyway; handheld mode is still fuzzy around the edges. Either turning off motion blur and chromatic aberration really did the trick, or I'm suffering from some serious Stockholm Syndrome.

But yeah, I imagine Prime 4 could (and likely will) look and run better than Doom thanks to it being developed ground-up for Switch.

It's also true what you say about how good Doom feels. The games that come to mind when playing it are the more fast paced games of old, like Quake 3, Unreal Tournament and sometimes even TimeSplitters. The rune trials feel like they could have been ripped from a TimeSplitters challenge set. Well, with a few melons, monkeys and mammaries lost in the process. I didn't expect to enjoy the game as much as I do, even though I had tried it before on PC, and I knew that it got such acclaim.
