Super Mario Odyssey Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by

A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!

Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!

And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.

I don't miss 1-ups. Taking away coins instead gives a (small) incentive to not die while not having to have an arbitrary system built around it. And although I think maybe some kind of moon fragment system would work better for the short / easy moons as opposed to getting full moons all the time, I like that basically everything you collect "matters" now.

I'm trying to remember the meat part that I literally just played last night because I honestly don't remember anything tough about getting up there?!

They basically replaced the 1UPs with Moons. It was a smart move.

And yeah, Luncheon might be in my top 5 kingdoms. It's certainly my favorite Mario volcano stage, and I love the Oktoberfest-type polka music in the main plaza. That and the music in the village from the kingdom before it really help give this game a globetrotting feel.

While I don't care about the lack of a lives system itself, it would have been neat if the 1up mushroom were still in the game for symbolic sake. For example, collecting one could just give you ten coins or something, or maybe it could have been the item which doubles your life meter.

I really like the variety in this game so I don't mind that some worlds have less focus on platforming than others. Most of the worlds feel pretty distinct from each other, which is great.

Okay, I think we all need to stage an intervention.

I can't even get 100! Granted, I haven't tried that many times either...

@Secret_Tunnel

What the hell.

Credits rolled. Everything about the final boss/ending was an absolute delight.

Now, onto the rest of the stuff...

Onto the actual game, you mean. Well, that's how it's started to feel to me, anyway.

@r_hjort

That's what I'm hoping for. Game is fun and everything, but it's definitely the least-impressed I've been with a Mario game at the "beating the game" point in quite some time. The game's strongest moments so far have largely come from some amazing fan service, more than anything else.

But I still have over half of the moons left to find, so...onward and upward.

I just accidentally found an entire new area in a place I thought I had been over somewhat thoroughly so that is neat. It's funny because I only found it by sucking at what I was doing. It's the "Deep Woods", which I would never have thought to go looking for, but I fell down there by mistake. Super cool.

@Secret_Tunnel I got 80 my 2nd? time I think and haven't come close since. Then again I have only tried it maybe 5 or 6 times so far. But I seem to get worse each time.

@Zero

I stumbled upon that area the other day as well while trying to gather musical notes!

@canonj

Ooo, I didn't know that was even a place! I've been missing a ton of moons in that kingdom, that must be why. I did see screenshots of being able to control a tree and knew that it had to be in the kingdom, but couldn't figure out where...
11/10/17, 22:36
@Secret_Tunnel I suspected something was up because I kept using Hint Toad and a bunch of hints kept popping up in the same exact position on the ? on the side of the map. But I just sort of put that aside and was trying to get a moon that looked doable and screwed up and ended up there.

In my defense, I only broke 100 once. I felt the rhythm and kept going until some fools started talking about Michigan State's path to the college football playoffs
11/10/17, 22:52
@Secret_Tunnel I find the hardest part is reaching 50 because the rhythm keeps changing until then. Once there, you pretty much just need to keep jumping as soon as Mario lands, and try to tap the button quickly so that Mario does short hops. I also got it first try when I used my GameCube controller, so I guess being wired helps...

@Zero There is a robot near the start who directs you to that area.

@Mop it up Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

Is this something from the start start or something that unlocks later?

Either way I sure never ran into it.

About the rope jumping: Have you guys tried jumping while on a scooter? It's not all that easy to line yourself up well without getting tangled in the rope, but if you do manage to get started it may or may not help you out with the timing since the jumps are...snappier. Or something. More canned like.

That being said, I haven't passed 100 on the scooter, only without it.

New Donk is fucking awesome. Love the entire first objective and the music there. Great stuff.

This game definitely has some real brilliant moments in it but is kind of hurt by the negatives like some worlds that are too small and IMO kind of uninspired.

Not too huge a fan of the Kingdom just before New Donk. Tiny, too easy, and not much of a looker. Perhaps the weakest in the game so far. Music's kinda catchy though so that's nice.

Look forward to more. I know less and less about the game from this point on but unfortunately I've caught some spoilers here and there. Fucking internet.

@carlosrox
Keep doing the main missions in New Donk before moving on. You're gonna have a good time.

I find there's not really a consensus for "worst" kingdom in the game; even the one that you (and Zero?) didn't like much, I've seen several people pick it as their favorite kingdom. Not sure if it still counts as a spoiler, but I'll mark it to be safe (kingdom before Metro): I really liked the theme of a "lost island" as a kingdom in the game. We've had jungles in Mario before, but a sort of forgotten world, complete with aviator outfit to really give it that crashed-survivor-Bermuda-Triangle feel was nicely atmospheric to me. Pretty neat capture enemies too. I actually was a little less impressed with the music there, if anything.

@Mop it up

Thanks, I pretty much used that method to finally get it. I threw the hat once or twice to readjust Mario's jumps, but I eventually got it. Took me quite a while though. Somewhere between 30 mins to a hour I think. I even got to around 96 or 97 once or twice and was constantly frustrated at having to constantly restart. Glad I never have to do that again.

Oh boy, went back to this after playing nothing but Doom since friday, and even though Doom is still a good looking game it's like putting on a pair of glasses booting up Odyssey again!

Also, damn this is fun. Gonna zip around New Donk City on a scooter just for the heck of it now.
