Super Mario Odyssey Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by
A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!

Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!

And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.

Agreed about the ending, it felt really out of character for everyone involved. Bowser was built up to be pretty menacing in this game, but that was all wasted at the very end with the gag of him and Mario begging for Peach's hand in marriage. And then Mario comforts him afterward? I mean, it's goofy, but what a lame ending to a grand adventure.

@ZeroRemember the theory I found and shared on Discord about Jumpman vs Mario? And you said it was wrong because of Pauline's age?

Pauline has a hat too. And she used to be blonde.

Jumpman + Blonde Pauline = Mario

Jumpman controls kid Mario with hat. BECOMES MARIO.
Blond Pauline controls some other young girl. BECOMES BRUNETTE PAULINE.
Donkey Kong has no hat. Gets old. BECOMES CRANKY KONG.

Also he's cranky because Jumpman and Pauline are running around with body stealing, life extending hats, but he's doomed to monkey arthritis.

We're through the looking glass here people.

@Shadowlink
Hahaha, it's about time something addressed the Mario/Cranky aging discrepancy!

Some thoughts:

Photo Mode is super distracting. As an art/graphics lover it's a really great thing, and snapping photos is super addictive, but it also breaks up the flow of the game (and the music) pretty badly, so in a way I see it as a negative.

They really need to get music going in the photo mode so it at least feels like you're still immersed in that world. It's disappointing to sit there in fucking silence so often.

Trust me, I spend a LOT of time in Photo Mode. Like honestly, probably even way more than I'm actually playing the game.

I'm only at the 5th Kingdom so this is probably premature, but I don't think this game is as good as 3D World or Galaxy *SO FAR*.

It feels way too easy right now, and the music while really good and certainly catchy, still doesn't reach the heights of the games before it. It kinda reminds me of BOTW in that sense. The music seems a bit too low key.

This is gonna sound weird but I think the best thing about this game so far is the graphics. Photo Mode blows my mind.

It controls super well and it's tons of fun moving around and experimenting with Mario. But I feel like it needs tighter more challenging platforming to showcase that. Hopefully the challenge comes later.

@TriforceBun Cappy will tell you if there are any purple tokens left in the sub areas, but yeah, it would be nice if there were some indicators for the main areas. Though, one of the Odyssey amiibos has the functionality to show purple coin locations...
11/04/17, 21:12
@Mop it upHe will? How?
11/05/17, 00:54
@Shadowlink If you re-enter a sub area you've already visited, Cappy will comment on it. If there is nothing left in it, he will say "Doesn't look like there's anything left to do here..." and if there is something left he will say "I remember this place!" and say whether there is a moon and / or purple coins.
11/05/17, 01:24
@Mop it up

Is that before or after postgame?
11/05/17, 06:24
@Shadowlink I'm not sure, I never revisited areas until I completed the story.
11/05/17, 19:29
@Mop it up

I suspect it's after. I'm close anyway! I'll find out soon.

@Shadowlink
I tried it before the end of the game and Cappy didn’t say a word.

That helped me immensely in my last moons and coins in the Cascade Kingdom and Cap Kingdom. I 100% those today. Turns out what I was missing was in old challenge rooms. It wasn't till mid-game that I started getting wise to the fact that two moons were in pretty much every special room.
11/06/17, 05:47
Is it weird to anyone else that you can (extremely mild inconsequential postgame spoiler?) just buy as many moons as you want? So there's no hard limit to how many moons there are in the game? Having moons just sitting out in the open waiting to be grabbed doesn't bother me,
but being able to buy an unlimited number of them does make them seem a little more disposable in my brain.

I'm at the point of the game where I'm gonna shelve it and then come back to it whenever I get the urge to play it; not gonna force myself to hunt down every moon right now just to say I did, but I know some afternoon within the next few months I'm gonna be in a "Mario is the greatest thing on the planet" mood and will wish I still had more of this game left to play. Doing the Breath of the Wild strategy with this one!
11/06/17, 08:30
@DrFinkelstein Haha, I figured that out pretty early on.

It's kind of formulaic, but I still felt pretty good about spotting the pattern. I love finding those hidden moons.

Back from vacay. Just got to Luncheon Kingdom and I'm at 285 moons.

The gameplay diversity is mighty impressive. And secrets! Secrets everywhere! The last two kingdoms leading into Luncheon have been two of my favorites so far.

If there's anything about the game that I think could be better, it'd be that I'd have liked to have seen more skill-based platforming integrated into the main areas. I think this is where Odyssey differs a bit from the previous 64-style games. The main sandbox areas are almost exclusively about exploration, whereas the bulk of the game's platforming feels very segmented off. Not that this is bad; I think the exploration is awesome and the platforming parts have been fun, if not especially challenging. But I think back on how important the platforming element was for stages like Whomp's Fortress and Tick-Tock Clock, and there hasn't really been anything like that in Odyssey so far. All of the 2D/3D pipes sections have been great, though.

This is generally how I'm feeling at the moment, too. I'm having a great time with everything, but the platforming aspect so far feels very secondary. But this is absolutely subject to change.

Luncheon Kingdom was much more up my alley. Lots more platforming integrated into the main area, and from a world/level design standpoint, I thought it was the strongest thus far.

@TheBigG753 @TheBigG753 All of this is pretty much exactly what I came here to say. I was a bit down on there being yet another water area and the lack of much focused platforming except for small bites in doors and such is getting me a bit down.

But I just got to the food one as well and it is awesome. The main layout has a lot of platforming. Also tons of doors and other challenges and such. A bunch of "main" quest parts (Five! Is this the most of any stage so far?) And it is cool when the volcano erupts and everything changes so there is more to explore! It's probably my 2nd favorite area behind New Donk. Actually it might even beat that?!

Like I said about the Woods and New Donk, if the whole game were like this it'd probably be my favorite 3D Mario game. But it seems like for every area that blows me away, there is another that is kind of... ok. Or two.

Still, on a high now, this place is great!

I don't know why I'm spoiler tagging stuff Nintendo showed off a bunch of in advance but ah well.

That was one of the best parts of the game though so... I was right!

@Zero Took me like a dozen tries to get up there.

CHOKE ON YOUR MEAT.

Incidentally, anyone else find it awesome that they finally did away with that archaic 'lives' nonsense? I know the 1-Up is iconic to Mario, but they haven't really been relevant in this series in ages. Like in Mario 64, you'd start with 5 lives, and sure you could get more...and then you'd save and come back to the game later and you'd have 5 lives again. And the penalty for losing them all was to make you restart back in Peach's Castle and waste a couple of minutes returning right back to the world you left off in. Pointless.

Here though, you get a small coin penalty and try again from where you failed. Much better.
