Super Mario Odyssey Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by
A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!

Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!

And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.

Your reactions to those two areas were pretty much my exact reactions too. And while I still don't see how this is the best Mario ever (or even best 3D Mario ever), I will say that I think the game gets better and better the more you play it. Even areas that I didn't think too highly of before can feature some really cool stuff when you go back to them later.

I mean, I still find moons that feel like throwaways sometimes (like, being rewarded with a moon for simply jumping on top of a thing out in the open), but I also find more and more cool challenges, which while they're more often than not kind of short, they've also got terrific, classic Mario gameplay and require a certain amount of concentration or skill. The more I play the more the good challenges outweigh the simplistic ones. But it's still no Mario 64, IMO.

Could you "joke score" people like... stop doing this every time a new big game comes out? It's kind of annoying because the scores are used for other parts of the site and it looks weird that our highest rated recent game is Golf Story, not Mario.

The highest rated recent game (3 ratings minimum) is Golf Story (Switch) with an average of 8.967. The highest rated all-time game (20 ratings minimum) is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) with an average of 9.777.

Yeah, I think the joke has run its course.

Was it ever a joke? I never found that funny

I'm going to counter the argument against many of the month bring simple because it's what makes this game work for all ages. We all know there are definitely some challenging and interesting parts of the game. But the generous supply of moons means that my four-year-old is getting just as much enjoyment as me. Yes, I've got tons more moons and have gone through more challenge areas than he has. But this game has given a consistently great experience to all four of us, and letting someone play as Cappy let's us parents help the little ones out or let's them experience some of the higher level challenges we play.

So in short, those easy moons aren't there for you. They're there for beginners.

I don’t have much to add to the convo except that I’m not one of the “joke score” people and that I love this game it’s amazing. My only gripe is that the motion controls are a pain in handheld mode and it’s frustrating you can’t map the most common moves to buttons. Other than that this game is pretty much a dream come true.

I have a question about the shops. Spoiler tagged 'cause there's a post-game element in my question.

When I get to a new world I tend to pop into the shop as soon as I can, 'cause I'm curious about what new stuff I can get. Whenever I've seen a moon up for sale for a 100 coins I've bought it, 'cause I've always figured it was one moon per world that you had to buy to get.

But when I browsed the shop in Mushroom Kingdom I noticed that I could buy ten moons at a time. Was it always like that? Are these shop moons just a way to skip having to do missions? What does this mean for the moon total in the game? Is there not a max amount of them anymore?

@r_hjort

From what I understand... their moons allow you to unlock more outfits quicker but those
will not count against your 100% completion count
.

I presume that you could buy up to a final count of 999 moons but that the game has half that in actual moons. Mind you, I don't know the actual count for finality.

Ah, well that sounds alright then! I mean, I'd rather do stuff to earn them than just buy them. Cheers!

@r_hjort

Same here. However I bought two more than the one you're meant to buy because I thought maybe they were wanting me to do so. However I didn't want to unlock in this manner so I won't buy any more until I naturally 100% it.
10/31/17, 18:20
@DrFinkelstein
Yeah, that's how I plan on doing it as well. But I have a feeling collecting every single thing in the game will take me some time. Sometimes when I feel like I should have done close to everything in any given world the game just goes 'hahaha, no' when I look at the totals. Which is fantastic, obviously!

Yup. Unless there's some amazing reward for 100% completion, the moons themselves are completely arbitrary. It's the challenges you should be focusing on! This is the same argument people made against Breath of the Wild, and I don't understand it at all. If you're not enjoying a particular part of the game, why are you bothering with it? Go play the levels you'll enjoy! These games weren't meant to be completed in a couple weeks, do whatever you feel like now and do the rest if you're ever in the mood to later.

I finally got to New Donk City last night, and one of the moons I got was the one for sitting next to the lonely guy.

I think it's neat. On other platforms, in certain games, this would have been an Achievement. Here it's an in-game reward. But the function is the same: to get you to do something cool the developer thought of.

For instance the really deep water hole is neat in that it is mysterious and you wonder what is at the bottom, but all you actually have to do is spam the ground pound button a bunch of times just to get down easily and get handed a moon. Like, what is even the gameplay there?!

Well, you can also possess a Cheep Cheep, bring it to the hole, and Cappy commends you for your smart thinking. It's still not especially challenging and it might not feel incredibly fresh for people like us who grew up on video game puzzles, but for others like my girlfriend who only reconnected with gaming after the NES with the Wii, it's new and clever.

I do get your point, though, and the game feels a bit "checklisty" for me. It's still real good, but so far I feel like 3D World will probably remain my favorite 3D Mario experience because of its more linear structure and because of the co-op.

I still think it would have been nice to have some more enemies strewn about the stages. I don't mind easy moons as such, but it would have been nice to have some sort of obstacle in between them now that fall damage isn't a thing. A goomba here or there would have been nice in New Donk City, for instance. Not that New Donk City isn't one of my favourite places in the game on account of it being such a magnificent playground, but still.

Pretty far in--my Moon count is floating around the 170s. Not sure how many kingdoms are left but I hope it's plenty; even stages I've seen bits of in Nintendo previews have been full of surprises, so I'm really excited for the ones they were completely quiet on.

@Zero
It's funny that you mention that Lake Kingdom Moon where you dive over and over; I did that a completely different way: I captured a Cheep Cheep and just swam to the bottom. And that's one of the things that I think both this and BotW do really well--give you multiple ways to clear a lot of the objectives.

@Guillaume
At the risk of sounding overly sensitive, can we get a spoiler tag on that Moon you got? I love little creative moments like that in these games and it would've been fun to figure that out.

@TriforceBun

Sorry. It was shown briefly in an early trailer and picked up on social media in gifs and memes, I stopped thinking of it as a spoiler.

@Cubed777 I mean, this may be true for some, but a lot of them still require doing more advanced stuff to get to the point of the path where they branch off from, it's just the actual thing you do to get the moon itself is short and sometimes unrewarding.

@Secret_Tunnel Well, see here is the thing though... how do I know what parts are the most fun and not until I play them? I mean I COULD just stick to the main path now, "beat" the game with as few moons as possible, and then try to go back and find out what the most fun side stuff is, but it'd be basically the same result in the end since I'd probably try to hunt down everything I could to make sure I'm not missing fun stuff, except maybe even less rewarding, because it wouldn't be mixed in with meatier main stuff and played organically as I discover it.

And in fact, that is one part I think this game gets super right, is that the progression in a world feels natural in that you don't get yanked out of the world every time you find a star shine moon, but you just have this nice open playground you can keep moving on, and being diverted from the main thing you were focusing on can just be a quick thing and you end up right back on your path. Much like Breath of the Wild I think the change they made is a very good one that makes for a more living, organic experience... but also much like Breath of the Wild I feel like maybe the "main" / "side" scale got tipped a bit too much to the "side" erm... side for the sake of having LOTS AND LOTS OF STUFF to pack worlds with. So you have all of this stuff to do, but it doesn't always feel *quite* as rewarding at any given moment.

Besides, if my issue is that say... the game doesn't feel like it has as much meat as something like Galaxy (which I'm not even sure is my issue, I'm still relatively early in), saying that I can skip a bunch of stuff doesn't really solve that. Then I just end up with an experience that perhaps meets the meatiness of Galaxy while it lasts, but is like half? the overall length.

I don't even think that Nintendo did anything wrong or anything, it's maybe just that "open world" games aren't quite my thing as much as a more straight-forward polished experience. But that's not to say I want to go back to the linearity of past Mario (and Zelda for that matter) games, just that I wish the balance between main and side was tipped more to main. I don't need SO MUCH stuff in my games if a lot of it is going to feel like filler to me.

@Guillaume I didn't know about it (but I also don't really care about spoilers much unless they're huge ones.)

Not that I want to give Nintendo any funny ideas, but Odyssey would work well with DLC. I don't want Nintendo to shove in any transactions of any kind, but if they'd ever decide to give us a new kingdom or cram a few extra missions into the ones we've already got, that wouldn't feel out of place.

@r_hjort
If Nintendo was truly evil they’d add loot-boxes with RNG costumes and gear, they could have a few ultra rare purple items that only dropped one out of every 100,000 boxes, they’d make billions off of people with obsessive and compulsive tendencies.

But since Nintendo isn’t super super evil I’d happily pay for some quality DLC!

@deathly_hallows
Well, out of those two options I'd definitely go with paid DLC packs, but considering how well Nintendo's doing and how well Odyssey is doing (think it sold two millions in a matter of days?) they could afford some free DLC for good PR and fandom boosts.

EDIT: Not that I feel Odyssey needs more content or anything. It's packed! I'm just saying the game could work as a home for add-on content.
