Super Mario Odyssey Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by
A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!

Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!

And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.

@r_hjort What you talking about I got the game at noon yesterday.

I just hadn't PLAYED it until last night.

Now I have. It's very good. Whether it will top, for instance, Breath of the Wild as best Switch game, or Super Mario 64 / Super Mario Galaxy 2 as best 3D Mario game... too early to say. Feels like it could though.

BTW I love how the game just throws the Tyrannosaurus at you early on. Totally thought it'd be a later game thing but nope, there it is, right away. So much fun.

HOLY MOP YOU GUYS! Just wait until you get to the part in the section in that level and see the thing that does the thing!

Haha, sorry about my unfunny screwing around. I blame society. Glad you're enjoying the game!

Personally I don't think this can top Breath of the Wild or Super Mario 64, 'cause there's something about it that I can't quite put my finger on that feels absent, but maybe I'm just being grumpy. Or maybe I'll change my mind soon, 'cause the game sure feels like it gets better the more I play. Which is amazing in all sorts of ways.

It's gonna be so interesting to see which levels, outfits and transformations are NW's favourites once the release date dust has settled a bit! There's so much new stuff to discuss!

EDIT:

Btw, speaking of Mario's outfits in case you've missed it: Here's Mario in his birthday suit from the official Super Mario Land manga.

You're all welcome. You pervs.

I could argue the best thing about this game is Photo Mode.

Unbelievably gorgeous. Fuck.
10/29/17, 12:29
So, uhh, did anyone else beat the main story?
I...I couldn't stop smiling. I have nobody to talk to about it and my wife was asleep when I did it. AND WE CAN'T REPLAY MISSIONS.

Arrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

@r_hjort
Well, that sobered me up at least.

Wow. Nintendo's attention to detail and love for easter eggs is mindblowing sometimes. Most of the time. Always.

EDIT: Not my find, btw. Found it on a tumblr.

@carlosrox

Photo Mode is great but best part? Play more pal.

@ploot

I think I am pretty much at the end of the main story. I'll message you on Discord when I see the end credits. Pretty good feeling I'm at the end kingdom for the story.

What do you mean about Missions? Story stuff you mean?

@r_hjort

That's one of the reasons being a Nintendo fan, and a long-time one at that, is so special.

@r_hjort
That is super-awesome!

@DrFinkelstein
Yeah, I meant story stuff. I suppose "missions" isn't the best description.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I love this game, the exploration is pretty awesome. It does feel sometimes though that there isn't as much *meaty* gameplay as some of the older 3D Mario games? Like a lot of the moons take just a few minutes to acquire, and I know there are a LOTTTTT but... it ends up feeling like a bunch of short little bites instead of something big and meaty?

Which isn't necessarily bad, though at times I'll play for like a half hour and just feel like I didn't really get deep into much. I'll have to see how I feel further in.

@Zero

The main missions seem to be a lot more involved than a lot of the side stuff. But I've also found some cool hidden levels that were pretty tough!

@Zero
I think that's what's keeping me from liking this as much as SM64, along with the soundtrack. There are certainly bigger and more challenging moons to deal with in there, but some of the easier ones kind of drag down the feeling of accomplishment for me.

It's a two-edged sword, 'cause I like the idea of having easier stuff in there for those who might not have much Mario experience or just want to play the game in easy mode, and it's amazing that the game has so much content, but at the same time the moons don't feel as special as the stars or shine sprites did. Also, I think there's a lack of enemies in the game in parts, which kind of amplifies that feeling to me.

I sound overly critical here, but this is just me trying to decide whether this game is closer to a 9.8 than a 9.6 in my book. Still love it.
10/29/17, 22:10
I don't even mind the difficulty levels just that a lot of moons are basically like a minute or two of gameplay. I know I COULD save those for later but it is tough to know what will be meaty or not.

I think I really liked it in the first area but maybe that is because I thought there might be like 10 or 12 moons total. In the second area I've already gotten like 30 moons and a bunch of them kind of felt unsubstantial. Like, here is a 20 second challenge. Even if you fail a few times it only takes like 2 minutes.

I do love how when you get moons you just keep moving though, instead of getting pulled out like in the older games. Maybe that is where the meatiness comes from? I dunno.

I definitely feel a bit like I felt with Breath of the Wild though where there is almost too much, and a little less with more depth would fit my tastes better perhaps?

Still don't get me wrong I really like this game. Already more engaging than 3D World (which I also liked.)

@Zero

Well the story stuff is usually pretty clear from what I've seen so do that now and focus on the rest later?
10/29/17, 22:51
It is kind of a weird feeling that the moons are so plentiful. I went back to New Donk City to get three purple coins that I just remembered that they existed, and came back with those and five moons that I just kind of happened to pick up along the way. All of them were good fun, though! It's a strange beast, this Mario game.
10/29/17, 23:06
@VofEscaflowne But then I'd have a bunch of tiny little stuff without much depth all at the end?!
10/29/17, 23:48
@Zero

Yeah, your comments about Odyssey are reminding me of your early impressions in the Zelda thread! My advice for this game is the same as with BotW, don't overthink it, just run around and do whatever you feel like.

Just running around is really fun to me though, so I guess your mileage might vary...

Having all the moons be tiny challenges is great to me because it means that there are either going to be hundreds of unique ideas, or eventually some ideas will repeat but get harder and meatier. One reviewer described this game as Nintendo having a game jam and then throwing every single idea they came up with into Odyssey, and I love that!

I've noticed that all the challenges behind those hat doors tend to be longer and more involved, maybe focus on those?
