Super Mario Odyssey Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by
A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!

Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!

And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.

I love Bowser. That is all.

@carlosrox
It's such a Nintendo feature! They've already crammed in fantastic gameplay and graphics and tons of content, so then they go and add all these meaningless little details that shouldn't matter, but end up leaving an impression anyway.

@Shadowlink

That seems to be the case through 3 worlds. Certain things don't become available until doing some/all of the golden path. It's more glaring in the first two kingdoms because they are set up kinda as a tutorial, whereas it's not as rigid by the third kingdom (a lot more "optional" moons are available at the start, while some are still gated). It's neat.

Gotta say, Pauline may be a successful mayor and an accomplished singer, but she's really forgotten where she came from. The vast majority of female mayors who've been abducted by giant apes tend to remember the carpenters who saved them, but she barely says hello when Mario meets her for the first time in years! Mario was even wearing the same outfit as back then and everything! At least in my case. She's got pictures of her kidnapper and has named streets and landmarks after his family, but nothing after Mario!

What the hell, Pauline. Is this Stockholm syndrome or some newly developed upperclass arrogance? Or...er...was Mario the bad guy? Did he interrupt something intimate up on that scaffolding all those years ago? Did he stand in the way for their interspecies romance? Maybe Mario is the ruthless villain here. I guess it makes sense. He doesn't have any qualms about taking over the minds of creatures large and small and having them do stuff against their own will. Maybe Mario is the Harvey Weinstein of the Mushroom Kingdom. Or maybe I shouldn't have been playing this game aaaaaalllll day today.

This contains pretty much every element one could want from a Mario game.

Watched Jim Sterling's impressions of the game just now (you can relax, carlos; he says it might be his favourite Mario of all time) and giggled quite a bit at him describing how common it is to find collectibles. "You can thrust your ass into the ground and maybe a moon will come out".

He didn't seem to word it like that for a joke either (not at first, anyway), it's just a natural way of describing how the game works. Gotta love videogames sometimes!

But if I'm gonna be a bit negative (or as close to negative as I can get when talking about Odyssey) about the game: I don't think the soundtrack kicks as much ass as the Galaxies or 3D World. Or SM64. I know everyone on teh internets seems to love Pauline's song and all that, but I think 3D World had far more catchy tunes than this. Not to say Odyssey's got bad songs or anything.

Mario's various outfits are just adorbs.

@r_hjort

Eh, Mario and Pauline haven't exactly been estranged since the original Donkey Kong. They've been hanging out together on a near annual basis whenever Nintendo cranks out another Mario vs. Donkey Kong game. Pauline is in all of them, IIRC.

Er, on-topic...the two-player mode works surprisingly well. My son and I collected like 20 Moons together last night. Fun stuff. The most fun I've had playing simultaneous multiplayer in a Mario game, in fact. No bumping or crashing into each other, getting in the way of other players. That never worked well for those games. But here? They got it right. They finally got it right.

@GameDadGrant
But still! It's all DK memorabilia, and no Mario. Almost makes it worse. Almost.

EDIT: I actually like all the DK references. I'm just being stupid.

The different transformations seem to really provide a lot of different neat abilities.

My copy should be delivered within the hour!

Someone on discord compared this game to Skyward Sword so it gets a 0/10 by association.

Oh my gosh, Goombas with pirate hats just turned into my favourite thing in the world. Adorable! Sell me figurines, Nintendo!

Make your body ready!

I just realized that this game shows what a 3D Kirby game could be like. Make it happen, Nintendo / Hal!
10/28/17, 20:47
Good god why does the game have 3 scores of 0 what is wrong with you people.
10/28/17, 22:29
@Zero I dare ask what is wrong with YOU for thinking it deserves anything higher.
10/28/17, 22:34
@Zero
You don't even have the game! You don't know what these poor people are going through!
10/28/17, 22:40
Wait, Zero doesn't even own this game?! And here I thought this was a site for Nintendo enthusiasts! He must be some sort of double-agent for Sony!
10/28/17, 22:43
@Mop it up
I have seen the signs of his double agent behaviour, but chosen to ignore them, and I'm so sorry that I have stood by while all this went down. I guess we'll just have to pack our bags and pull a ResetEra now. Why couldn't he just have gone into the shower with someone who didn't want him there, like normal site owners?!

Hi all, it's been awhile.

Just sat down with Odyssey for a couple hours on my friend's Switch. It's pretty good. Real good. I was worried that it was going to feel generic and not feel like a Mario game from the videos I watched. Nope, it's Mario all right. It feels like the Galaxy games, but not in space, and bigger. A lot bigger. The Galaxy worlds were more bite-size. These feel more like what we had in Super Mario 64 and Sunshine.

The music stood out to me immediately. I think I heard the Gusty Garden Galaxy music right away in the T-Rex level (or something similar from Super Mario Galaxy). Then in the desert level, I think I heard what sounded like an orchestrated mix of the music from the desert level in Super Mario 64.

My only minor disappointment is that the motion gestures in the game make playing Odyssey in handheld mode a lesser experience, since you won’t be able to do the gestures. I played it in tabletop mode though, and thought it played fine.

I’m still amazed Nintendo was able to fit all that power into that little tablet. I don’t own a Switch yet, but Odyssey will likely be the first game I get for it.

@Zero

Oh. my bad. I've fixed it now.
