So I finally started Disgaea 5 Complete, in order to cope with my Rabbits envy. The first thing I did was download all of the available DLC bundles, because why not? Here's why not: It totally breaks the game and sucks the fun out of it. Every early enemy was basically a one-shot kill. After starting a new save file, though, I began to really enjoy it. I'm still not very far yet (second chapter), but it's a fun little (big?) turn-based strategy game with tons of mechanics, nice presentation (which loses nothing from the PS4 version), and goofy characters. I found the controls to be squirelly at first, but, after dipping below maximum cursor speed, they were fine. And it was hard to see/select characters in battle areas with lots of units, due to the large sprites and the isometric view. But the camera rotation options mostly alleviate that problem. I know that you can micromanage the shit out of your characters or overlevel to the point of absurdity, but I have no interest in that. Even played as a simple strategy game, though, it's still pretty fun! Do you guys have any experience with the Disgaea franchise? URL to share (right click and copy)

Only tried the demo when that came out, and I enjoyed it, but I don't really like the goofy style. I like plenty of goofy games, but I think I'd need something a bit less silly to motivate me to get into the intricacies of the system. Still, might very well get it if there ever is a big drought and my backlog isn't screaming for attention, 'cause it seems very well crafted overall. Also, the base hub music is beautiful! Well, until the singer opens her mouth. I don't normally endorse auto-tune, but holy crap. I've been looking for an instrumental version, or a version by a different singer, perhaps in Japanese or whatever, but it doesn't seem to exist. |

I've never played a Disgaea game so I had no idea what to expect. I tried out the demo, and for some reason, I wasn't expecting it to be so super-duper anime, dood. It made me want to puke and I had to shut it off immediately. Eventually, I went back to it later and got to the gameplay part, which seemed pretty decent, dood. Things like the combo system seem like they could provide some depth to the battles later on, and there are a lot of ways to build a team, dood. The thing I worry about when a game gives this many options, is if there becomes a point where certain team builds don't work at all, and I'd need to spend a lot of time grinding up the "correct" team, dood. The story and writing is pretty cringe-worthy and seems to throw out every anime trope in the book, it may be hard to stomach when playing the game, dood. I may pick it up sometime if the price gets cheap, dood. |
