SteamWorld Dig is back and bigger than ever! The sequel to the wildly ported and successful SteamWorld Dig releases on Thursday the 21st of September. The game has you starring Dorothy, a Steambot on a quest to find her friend Rusty from the first game. Explore the depths of the landscape, collect yourself some loot in the process, and uncover the mysteries set forth before you. The first game sucked me in to a ridiculous degree and thus the anticipation is high for this one. Image & Form has a promising track record, and this game will likely be one to keep an eye on.
Non-randomised actually sounds good to me. I liked the first game well enough, but the random nature of it made me feel that luck played too big a part. It might cut down on replay value but that's not a huge concern for me.
I actually liked the randomness but my fears it wouldn't feel as fun are gone. The randomness might be nice for future replays but at the same time it means a limited scope for what they've crafted. This is a deeper and more crafted experience and it just might be better for it.
Oh, and hey everyone, I made another YouTube video. Not a podcast one. An actual game-footage-based help video. Just some tips for early gamers to consider. Why don't you check it out for the heck of it? I kept it pretty spoiler free. Mostly early-game stuff or I don't quite show bigger secrets that may be lurking off screen.
I'm enjoying this a lot, but I'm not sure if I'll prefer it to the first when all is said and done. The variety is much greater, but it almost feels like a different type of game. It's taken more influence from Metroid than ever, which means a lot of fun, well-designed areas and puzzle-type moments. At the same time, I feel that the actual digging gameplay has been reduced as a result. I'm getting concerned that this could hurt replay value in the long run.
So, as someone who kind of liked the first game but wasn't blown away by it and doesn't have a whole lot of time to game right now and has a million other games I'm trying to focus on, should I jump in on this one? Everything I'm reading says it is much better than the first.
Depends what you didn't like about the first. If the random layouts weren't your thing, then you should love this one. I also greatly enjoyed the first but felt it was held back by the random caves so naturally this was a much improved sequel for me. I don't think it really hurts the replay value since I plan on going for all gold stars for the end rating. Should be quite difficult to pull off!
I mean personally this is basically GOTY quality for me right now and I'm not even done with it 100%. I did beat the game a few days ago and just absolutely love everything about it. Image & Form are really masters at what they do and have established themselves as the top indie dev for me. Cannot wait to see what else they have lined up for the future.
I can see what you mean...it is different in that regard, and playthroughs will take longer as a result. Still, I think this is a good sequel for doing something different than the original, even if the formula isn't entirely reinventing the wheel.
I 100%'d the game yesterday. In the case of getting the secret, you just have to find all 42 collectibles. It's the Cave of Trials in the East Desert, located in the sky, so you need the jetpack fully upgraded to get there. You get a 43rd collectible for completing it...so you'll have 43/42 collectibles when you finish it.
@ludist210 Ooh, nice. I'm in an acid-filled area now. Trying to find as much as possible before heading to any final gauntlet but I must be pretty close to the end.
Started this game tonight and played it for a couple of hours. So far so good, but I have to say it doesn't feel anywhere near as addictive as the first one. Maybe it's just that I'm not far enough into it yet, maybe it's just that it doesn't feel as fresh this time around, maybe Samus Returns spoiled me, but I just don't have the same drive to unlock the upgrades and keep digging farther down as I used to.
You're near the end then, I think. Depends on what order you destroyed the Doomsday Devices in, but you're close to it...I hated that area.
The only rush is what I mentioned in my previous post. Something you could do before challenging it is to stock up on blood stones and mod yourself to get health every time you discard one. I didn't think of that until I'd already finished the area though...
Beat the game last night, now working on 100%. Is there any clue as to where some of the artifacts and cogs are hidden besides the ones in caves? I'd rather not scour the entirety of these large dig sites if I don't have to...
Overall, I thought it was pretty great. About on par with the first, but for different reasons and it has different strengths. It's probably my favorite downloadable (eShop) title on the Switch so far.
Only trick, if you've explored the maps enough to see these details, are that certain areas of the map will have different colored areas so that you know there's a secret path leading somewhere. If not, you're best bet is really to just hug all the walls until you either find that secret or the map shows something is fishy. Not the most ideal way to do things but shouldn't really take too long.
