SteamWorld Dig 2 Review (Nintendo Switch) (9.7)  by

SteamWorld Dig is back and bigger than ever! The sequel to the wildly ported and successful SteamWorld Dig releases on Thursday the 21st of September. The game has you starring Dorothy, a Steambot on a quest to find her friend Rusty from the first game. Explore the depths of the landscape, collect yourself some loot in the process, and uncover the mysteries set forth before you. The first game sucked me in to a ridiculous degree and thus the anticipation is high for this one. Image & Form has a promising track record, and this game will likely be one to keep an eye on.

Check out the new trailer if you haven't already!

Once you get the game, don't forget to add it to your database!

I thought I saw a tweet about this but then I couldn't find the thread. This was posted back in February? And no one replied to it?

Well the review embargo is up for the game anyway. Daan Koopman from Nintendo World Report handed out his first 10 in 5 years for this game. Another writer from that website also gave it a 9.5. Seems like we have another hit from Image & Forms on our hands! Can't wait to check this out on my Switch tomorrow.

I barely played the first but I would like to fix that with 2 (plus it looks better). Getting this tomorrow.

I haven't even beaten Metroid yet! So much Metroidvania! So little time!

My time with it so far reads the same. It's really well done. There's a lot I haven't seen but one big thing for me was my fear of how it would feel without the randomized nature of it. The answer is that it feels great.

Oh snap, is this out already? Dammit I still have to finish Zelda, Mario and Rabbids, and Metroid! I probably won't get to this until later this year. (Though I'm going to buy now to support Image and Form, both Dig and Heist are insanely excellent games).

@deathly_hallows

It released officially overnight. Should be up for download now!

Exciting news from Image and Form...

Image and Form said:
"One of the things we promised ourselves when we set out to make SWD2 was to include a big reward at the very end of the game. A chunk of bonus gameplay that justified getting to the core of what SWD2 is all about: exploration.

We thought it was a fun to surprise completionists this way, but now we realize that players deserve to know that completing the game 100% unlocks post-game content. Of course we'll let players discover for themselves WHAT that is... suffice it to say that it is as surprising as it is challenging!"

Challenge accepted!

Time to stay off GameFAQs for this game. I don't want it spoiled the way they spoiled Metroid for me. :/

@TriforceBun

Amen! I'm staying off YouTube the best I can too. So tired of seeing videos like, "The Final Bosses" just a day after release. Overall its not an issue if they wouldn't make their thumbnails the spoilerific content.

I'm working on a video now for YouTube but I'm intentionally sticking to footage from earlier in the game so I can get my point across and avoid spoiling too much for someone.

Wow, it's amazing to think how far Image & Form have come. This is the 4th game they've made in the SteamWorld series...I wonder if they'll ever branch off and do something else?

They may not need to, since all their SteamWorld games have been top-notch. Still, it'd be interesting to see what they could come up with.

@GameDadGrant

You planning to pick this up on Switch? They haven't announced it for 3DS but j do fully expect that to happen at some point. They've hinted at it, playing coy.

The game looks great in handheld mode though just as it does docked. Great game on the go gaming.

Holy crap, this game is hitting all the right spots This is so damn good so far and I'm really not that far. And part of that enjoyment comes from seeing how far Image & Form has come really. Back to when they released their first game, basically spamming everyone on Twitter (including me!) to check out their game and now the praise for their stuff just comes naturally as fans can't wait to see the next game in the series. But this game just feels so special right now and I can't wait to play more. Feels so polished and alive with a fun sense of exploration and upgrade system. These guys kick ass at what they do.

@DrFinkelstein

I just might!

@VofEscaflowne

They really are a special developer aren't they? It's amazing that keeping to one universe also hasn't had a negative effect.

A boss fight against Mario is the reward for 100%. Pretty surprising!

@Mop it up

I hope you just didn't spoil the reward...

Downloaded and waiting for me at home. Can't wait to give this one a go tonight!

@DrFinkelstein

To be fair, they made an iOS/Android game called Anthill that was completely unrelated to the SteamWorld universe...but I don't think it's available anymore. I can't find it on Google Play (but I'm sure I could find the .apk out there somewhere and sideload it).

This is quite fun so far. I like the implementation of Paper Mario's Badge-style system! Looks and plays really well and has that addictive quality that made the first so enjoyable.

The only thing I don't really like is the snarky, morbid sidekick character. A lot of newer games have that type of humor and it's starting to feel like this decade's Poochie.

@Mop it up
You cheeky Birdo!

I picked this up, but, like a fool, I had started a new file on the first a few days ago to psych myself up. Now I've gotta finish that! And it might burn me out! Graaahhhh!

So is it still randomised like the first game? I thought I saw a comment on the discord channel that it had a bit more structure to it.
