Sooooooooo, this is out! My copy should hopefully be arriving after work (if not, my weekend plans might change a bit!)

I've been really pumped for this, because Metroid II is the only main Metroid I've yet to play (I haven't played AM2R either), so this is for all intents a brand new Metroid game for me while also kinda filling in that last gap in the canon.

Really like it so far. Played a bit before my battery started to die. Wanted to play a little more tonight, but I reached a pretty good stopping point and I'm tired soo...

Looks and plays well. It really does have the feel of a 2D Prime in a way, between the visuals and the music. I actually really like the analog aiming, it felt natural to me right off of the bat. And the melee counter works a lot better than I would have thought. I've been using that quite a bit so far.

Only real gripe is that I kinda don't want to use that Aeion Pulse ability, at least not until the end of the game and I'm exploring for those last few items. I've hit "A" on accident a couple times and didn't really want to have the map exposed like that. There's no way to turn that off until you get a different Aeion ability to switch to...right?

@TriforceBun It's from EB games!

Regular. Got special coming from Amazon.

I WISH it was the EU Special....

@TheBigG753

If you tap A again before the pulse goes off you'll cancel it.

@Brick

OK, cool. Thanks!

I got the Wave Beam and it replaces the Power Beam, so it seams you can't stack Beams, and can't use the Ice Beam and Wave Beam at the same time.

Oh yes!

Actually, I think it does stack beams, but just not the Ice Beam because its properties are so different from the other weapons.

Just cleared Area 2 tonight. Having a great time so far!

@TriforceBun

You're right I should have wrote that better as certain Beams and abilities stack, but not all.

For the love of all that is good in this world, the music/sound/atmosphere in this early part is ridiculous.

Nintenfreaks. They really just outdid one of the most amazing parts in all of Dead Space history at its own game? Wtf lol? That's possible? Okay, fuck you Nintendo.

Please stop hiring Gods, Demons, and Aliens and share with the rest of us.

This fucking sound design tonight.

What's the verdict on this game's potential for speedrunning and sequence breaking? I'm down for a fun new Metroid game either way, but what makes the series so special and unique to me is how deep you can go into its mechanics.

Same goes for the hard modes--any word on if they're worth it?

This game's a dream. I'm so happy I live in a world where this game exists.

My wrists and elbows are so sore though.

I think I have Metroid MANIA.

They shoulda called this game Metroid Mania.

Haven't played Hard Mode yet. As for sequence breaking, they do let you bomb jump (with some difficulty--it's tougher than Zero Mission's), but the wall-jump is the gimped Fusion version and it seems to have limited use from my playthrough so far (I say this as someone who regularly sequence breaks in Super Metroid and Zero Mission). I have been able to nab a couple power-ups early thanks to a well-timed wall-jump or bomb jump, but relatively few. And there are new obstacles now that seem to require players to pick up (previously) optional upgrades like the High Jump Boots or Spring Ball.

In other words, based on what I played so far, the speedrunning/sequence-breaking is probably more like Fusion than Super.

@TriforceBun

I think that's a very apt comparison. The game is still very segmented. There's not a whole lot you can do to sequence break because at the end of the day you're still going to have to explore a majority of the game to kill every Metroid. It seems to me that the depth in speedrunning this game will be in figuring out the optimal way to handle the massive amounts of enemies it throws at you. AM2R had some neat tricks to bypass some of the slower rooms, but I haven't encountered any such secrets in this remake. So far it seems like AM2R would be the better choice for speedrunners.

For reference, I've just finished area 2 (the water level).

The backgrounds in this game are fantastic. When I saw the screenshots I felt as if they made some of the environments seem too roomy and spacious for a Metroid, but I was so wrong. They're doing a great job balancing claustrophobic passages with bigger, eerily desloate caverns and rooms. The sound design really helps too. Way more atmospheric and impressive than I remember anything in Other M being. Closer to Metroid Prime level, really. The architectural designs and remnants of old Chozo statues look great, and still have a mysterious quality to them even though I've seen similar stuff in so many Metroid games before. The attention to detail carries over to all the animations in the environments too; I love how you can spot old machines still trying to carry out their old tasks, weird creatures slithering around in the dark and random structures collapsing.

I still wish we'll get a beautifully hand painted 2D Metroid at some point (preferably with gameplay as open and raw as Super Metroid), but Samus Returns does make a great case for polygonal environments and three dimensional camera work in a sidescrolling Metroid. Damn fine game, this.

20 Metroids killed. 20 Metroids to go.

I've only played for like the first hour but I can already tell I don't love the controls. They're fine just a bit loose, not as crisp and direct feeling as the 2-D games. I find myself wishing I could use the d-pad for movement. I'm never a fan of 2-D games that control with an analog stick. It's funny but it's kind of the exact opposite problem that Other M had!

Other than that it's pretty awesome, the atmosphere and music are fantastic.

@deathly_hallows
Aside from a missing 'walk' option and maybe using the missiles I love everything else about the controls.

@r_hjort
A+ post.

I love the fucking "space is so vast and awesome" music, while also throwing elements of horror in there!

The music is fucking ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omg you can do quick draw shots and like quick freeze then missile kills. So damn good.

Prime 4!!!!
