#6 Sonic the Hedgehog
Holds up remarkably well for being the first outing in the franchise, but the levels weren't built to take advantage of Sonic's full capabilities quite yet.

#5 Sonic 2
Faster! More content! Multiplayer! Unfortunately also picked up a few bad habits, like mashers and more bottomless pits. Kinda peters out in the back half.

#4 Sonic & Knuckles
The Zones in this half of the True Sonic 3 Experience can be split pretty evenly between Rather Good (Flying Battery, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg) and Just Fine (the rest).

#3 Sonic CD
I didn't like it the first time I played it. I loved it the second time. Bordering on incoherent in a lot of ways, with crazy color schemes and out-there music and a rather scattershot approach to stage design. Those unorthodox experiments are part of its charm, even when they don't pan out.

#2 Sonic Mania
This would be on top for sure if its wealth of content skewed more towards original and less borrowed. What's there is mostly excellent, new and old.

#1 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG THREE, BABY
The series fully embraces its strengths for the first time and goes wild on the stage design and level gimmicks. It doesn't have the most content, but it's the most consistently great Sonic game for sure.

Hell yeah!

My ratings would probably be the same, but I'd swap Sonic 3 and Mania. I might put Sonic CD at number 2, but I haven't played enough of it to have a fully formed opinion.

I'm so happy for longtime classic Sonic fans. :)

It is good to feel good about Sonic again.

Rolling Stone's game blog interviewed Christian Whitehead. It's all good stuff. Here's the end.

Can you tell me a bit about your plans for the future?
Well, I think my immediate plans are to take a bit of a holiday. (Laughs) I’m always thinking ahead in terms of what I want to do tech-wise and creatively. I’ve got my own ideas for what I would do with Sonic, but there’s really no point in telling any of that, because it would have to be a collaborative process with Sega. I think our team has definitely enjoyed working on Sonic a lot, and I’d love to do more. Before I did Sonic Mania, I set up the engine for Freedom Planet 2, and I prototyped a few original games, which I definitely have an interest in pursuing. As far as Sonic Mania 2, initially, I was planning on moving onto an original game, but I couldn’t have imagined working on something this big.

Well, personally, I’m hoping it’s Ristar Mania.
(Laughs) It’s funny you say that, because we’ve joked about it in the past. Ristar, Burning Rangers, games like that. Sega has a rich and diverse set of IP, and I think there are many development teams both in and outside Sega that could do amazing things with them. That’s just my personal thought. I couldn’t really imagine this scenario when I was younger. It’s easier now for talented people from across the globe to come together. And that’s exactly what happened with Sonic Mania.

Super Sonic button! Yes please. Maybe now I'll finally finish my Knuckles run.

Got this game today! Fun stuff. Played through Green Hill Zone three times, had a different experience each time. This game was meant to be replayed a lot--I can't imagine being satisfied with it after only one playthrough with no Game Overs.

Of course, that's assuming that playing Sonic at a high skill level feels really good--as good as, say, playing Mario at a high skill level. Any great Sonic players wanna weigh in on this?

@Secret_Tunnel I replay Sonic games waaaaaaaaaaaay more than I replay Mario games. There's just so many more alternate routes and little secrets to find. I've played through Sonic 2 probably 50 times since kindergarten and I never knew about this Chemical Plant shortcut until someone pointed it out to me. Every time I replay Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I find some small thing that I either never knew about or had totally forgotten. And of course Sonic's huge range of speed and its interplay with the level design and his versatile jump make the games a joy to explore.

@nate38

Thanks for the tip! Does this work in Sonic Mania? I can't get past Chemical Plant 2 for the life of me.

....I suck at Sonic games.
01/21/18, 18:15
@GameDadGrant I think the same shortcut is in Sonic Mania, but I'm pretty sure it's in Chemical Plant 1 there.

@nate38

Hmm, I'll look for it.

When my son gets back home with the Switch. (he's spending the night at his grandma's house tonight) Thus is the benefit and drawback of the Switch. It's portable! Which means I may or may not have access to it at any given time.

Sonic Mania Plus hitting retail this summer! My wait has not been for naught!
03/16/18, 23:25
@r_hjort Hooray!

- retail package with new content
- includes playable Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel
- Encore Mode has visual changes, and new ways to explore each act
- expanding online and competition mode, allowing for 4 players
- comes with holographic slip cover, reversible Genesis branded sleeve, and 32-page art book
- $30
- if you have Sonic Mania digitally, you get all the updated content in Sonic Mania Plus through a digital update
- preorders start next Monday
- due out this Summer

Free update for current owners? I'd buy that for a dollar! EDIT: Oh, maybe it's not free. I'll buy that for X dollars!

Mighty the Armadillo playable? Wherever he may be, Dillo64's Mighty Sense is tingling.

I guess Encore mode is like a remixed stages mode? Looking forward to seeing more of that for sure.

Here's hoping the "expanding online" suite includes real time competitive/cooperative play. EDIT: Watching the presentation, I don't think there's any new online features, just a 4P version of the offline Competition mode. Teeny tiny smooshed split-screen view!

I might be more excited for this than the Mania Plus content!
03/16/18, 23:43
Also: looks like there's going to be a new Sonic racing game.

Maybe another Sega All-Stars Racing entry? The R in the logo is reminiscent of Sonic R, though. EDIT: Apparently it's "not a sequel to any previous game," so maybe not.

Bring back the accordian guy from Sonic 06

Cartoons!

It may surprise you to learn that I love it.

This is fantastic! I love how silly it is. Sonic Mania keeps on doing so much good for this series.
03/30/18, 23:45
So apparently there was a patch for this game on the PS4's UK store with some surprising (and welcome) content changes.

1. Zone transitions have been added for some of the later stages that didn't have them!
2. Cutscenes can be skipped.
3. One of the bosses has actually been changed up substantially: Metal Sonic's final form is now...different.
4. The time limit can be switched off in the Options menu!
5. Sonic's unlockable bonus abilities (Insta-Shield, Peel-Out) can now be used in regular save files and not just No Save Mode.

It's possible there's more in there that hasn't been discovered yet, too.

No word on if this was supposed to be Sonic Mania Plus content (the "Encore Mode"?) that was accidentally leaked, or if it's actually just going to be a nice update for the base game.

I'm a little surprised that this game only just reached 1 million in worldwide sales. Better late than never, anyway!

New trailer! First (official) footage of Sonic Mania Plus.

-- Available July 17
-- Visual alterations to level backgrounds, I'm guessing this is the Encore Mode
-- Mighty has a ground-pound bounce attack (think Sonic's bubble shield bounce) that seems to be invulnerable to spikes
-- Ray can glide in a way reminiscent of Super Mario World's cape

If these additions are free DLC to Sonic Mania owners, I'll probably just download it on Steam. If there's an added price for them, I might just go all the way and pick up a physical copy for Switch. I'm not much for collectors' items, but this is Sonic Mania, so I could make an exception. And it would be nice to have a second Switch game, even if it's something I already own on PC.

EDIT: Just realized that Mighty and Ray's top speed sprite is based on their running animation from SegaSonic The Hedgehog!

Their debut game, and while Mighty would return in Knuckles Chaotix, Ray never did.
Weird to see him back now instead of, like, Amy.
Bizarre but interesting looking arcade game controlled with a trackball. Wish I could try it sometime.
