At least the amount of snails won doesn't vary as much in Splatoon 2 -- 24 snails for winning as a king/queen versus 21 snails for losing.

@DrFinkelstein

Thanks again for helping us out last night. My nephews were sad that we couldn't play as a team without a fourth player, so you really came through. (Plus it didn't hurt that you were clearly the best player on our team!)

I hope Nintendo changes some things around in future updates. It would be great if there was an option to recruit a third or fourth random player to join a squad, just like you can in Salmon Run.

Sometimes, I get a craving for mayonnaise and then have to figure out something to put it on.
08/06/17, 19:37
I actually think mayo is sort of gross but ketchup is pure hot garbage so I had to choose my side. NO ROOM FOR SUBTLETIES. THIS IS AMERICA.
08/06/17, 19:48
@Zero What are your thoughts on mustard?
08/06/17, 19:55
THE BEST.
08/06/17, 20:00
@Mop it up
Or Sriracha?
08/06/17, 20:00
Actually nowadays I do put hot sauce on pretty much everything but mustard is also really good.

Man, the EU Splatfest was close, but mayo won. 66% voted for ketchup, but mayo won 51% of their matches in both solo and team categories. I like both condiments, so I'm not too upset even if I did vote ketchup.

A reporter once asked a friend of mine what his biggest fear is. "Death. That my kids are going to die. Also ketchup."

Hell YEAH, mayo. I seriously thought that catsup was going to win.

Had some good matches late last night. It turns out that I can do okay, as long as I'm not 10-20 levels below the other people in the room! I still stink, but I'm starting to form some strategy.

The campaign is pretty fun, too. Now that I've stopped trying to use freehand Joy Con, I'm really enjoying the second world. The level design is a clear improvement over that of the first game's campaign.

Gotta say, I don't really understand the Splatoon 1.5 comments. It seems like a huge double-standard. Although maybe I'm not in the best position to judge, since Nintendo's focus on gaming fundamentals really appeals to my tastes.

All of the stupid ARMS hot takes disturb me, as well. Nintendo took the time and risk to create a brand new IP with appealing new characters and mechanics that genuinely feel like nothing I've ever played before, while still being intuitive and polished, and many people just write it off because of the amount of "content". Like they're freaking television executives.

The palpable feel of the combat is so impressive to me, with the subtle, but incredibly effective force feedback implementation and the beautiful animation and sound design. In addition, it brilliantly recontextualizes the fighting genre so that everyone can get in on the ground floor again. The AI is actually fun to fight, the local multi is awesome, and there is actually quite a variety of different modes. Of course, there's room for improvement, but give it some freakin' credit for nailing so many things out of the gate!

I dunno. Innovation should be encouraged. And hot takes suck. And this should be its own thread.

Hooray for mayo!

@Anand
Huh, never heard the term "hot take" before.

@TriforceBun
I'm sure that you've seen 'em, though. It's discouraging that one can get more Internet cred for mocking something they don't like than from extolling the virtues of something they do.

Being one of those who might have used the term 'Splatoon 1.5' earlier, I do think that applies to the testfires, because they didn't really show off anything that was all that far beyond what we already had in the first game. The full release is a bit different, though.

All you mayo fanatics are weird. (But not really, I just prefer ketchup.)

The SplatFest was a mess. The overwhelming majority of my matches were Ketchup versus Ketchup, and the colors were generic. I liked the idea, but it was so skewed that it wasn't as fun as I hoped it would be.

Still, I'm a Ketchup King. So there's that.

Mayo is so much more versatile than ketchup. Mix in garlic, or mustard, or sriracha, or curry, or anything. Any Belgian fries place worth its salt will have dozens of choices.

@Guillaume While I do agree with you, I've had a sweet onion ketchup that was actually pretty good.

I started reading this guide to gear abilities, and then my brain leaked out my ears and now I don't remember my own name.

Where do you guys stand on the "ink your base" debate?

I've seen a couple of articles like this one about the importance of inking your spawn point. And then I read the counterargument that by focusing on inking over the other team's ink, you're doing twice the work because you're taking away their ink and replacing it with your team, which makes it twice as effective.

It's an attractive argument, but I'm not sure it works out in practice. By only going for the disputed patches of territory, you're putting yourself at greater risk of getting splatted and you're open to have the territory you've claimed reclaimed at the last minute.

Inking the margins (and your base) seems to make a difference more often than not, in my experience. So many times, I'd look at the map after the match thinking "ooh, this is close", because the middle of the map would look more of less evenly divided by the two teams. But then the actual percentages are revealed, and it's not even close: there can be a 20% gap between the two, in favor of the team that's been more thorough inking their base.

@Guillaume

I think it's important at the start, and on subsequent spawns I'll cover what's empty...but typically, I go for the other team's ink because of what you said.

I tend to play offensively, so I am calculated on where I go. I try to get behind someone and splat them that way.

@Guillaume

To me, the person on your team who performs the most poorly in firefights--or whoever is using a roller--should hang back and fill in all the nooks and crannies on your part of the map. Spending 25% of your team's effort during the first half of the match for some guaranteed territory is definitely worth it, since you can always bounce back in the second half of the match if you play your cards right.

@Guillaume
The way I see it, the middle of the map is the most contested. If you get there first, you can ink it, giving your team an advantage during the inevitable fights there. More ink is better for you because it gives you places to hide, heal, and recharge your supplies.

That said, it's important to EVENTUALLY ink the base areas--just less important right at the beginning when you can tip the match in your favor. I tend to try to ink the base about a minute into the match if I'm splatted and it needs inking.
